Stephen Starr’s Buddakan is a spectacular restaurant featuring exotic flavors of modern Asian cuisine with creativity and drama. Bon Appetit notes, "The mostly white space is striking, with a lit-from-within communal table in the middle of the room, a waterfall & a ten-foot, candle-bedecked Buddha. The religious icon watches over hip customers indulging in pan-Asian cuisine that far surpasses the fare usually found at hot spots like this." Newsweek reports, "Design also serves as a signifier for cuisine. You walk into Buddakan, one of the hottest new restaurants in Philadelphia, past a shimmering waterfall & Japanese river stones & you say to yourself, 'ginger-miso everything' even before you see the magnificent 10-foot Buddha dominating the dining room." Named one of “America's Top 50 Restaurants" by Travel & Leisure and 'Top Restaurant for Fun' by Gourmet, Buddakan has become one of the country's most talked about restaurants.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Nery Hernandez

From the OpenTable editors: Buddakan is Philadelphia royalty. Legendary restaurateur Stephen Starr opened the pan-Asian hotspot in 1998, and nearly three decades later it's just as packed as ever. A giant golden buddha statue in the center of the massive dining room will frame a meal that might include edamame dumplings, lobster fried rice, and shrimp bao buns. Toast your companions with a pick from the excellent sake selection.

The food was subpar, particularly the crab fried rice. Very bland. Food Not as good as I rember before COVID. My Lychee Martinez was great!

Le restaurant n’est pas à la hauteur pour un Buddakan en comparaison avec NYC ! Décoration très et trop simple. Plats banals et pourtant très chers. Aucune ambiance. Le lieu est sans saveur. Je ne recommande pas du tout !

Service was great. Food was very good. Seated next to the kitchen which was too noisy/busy.

Overall the food was very good and service was attentive. The appetizers were a bit over portioned even for 3 people. We had decided on the calamari salad which was on its own the size of an entree but tasty and the fish was fresh. For an entree we had ordered the lobster rice, chicken, and whole duck. The rice was not as done as I would like it and tasted greasy however the dish as a whole was overseasoned with msg/salt. The chicken was the worst offender as it was simply a fried chicken breast on a plate with a lemon reduction. However the crispiness of the chicken was lost from the sauce as it made the breading soggy and unapatizing. Secondly because they chose to use a breast, the meat itself was dry when it was served. Finally the duck which was tasty but at the end of the day unremarkable. The one factor that should be the most prominent on a Peking duck (the crispy skin) was limp and soggy leaving the the meat to carry the rest of the dish. Overall excellent service with a middling chinese flare. With some simple tweaks to ingredients and overall prep, this restaurant can definately be one of the better upscale places in philadelphia

Ariel was an amazing server and we enjoyed her very much! . Two things stood out to me. First, they brought us a new less salty calamari salad when we said the first one was a bit salty. Second, we mentioned my birthday is coming up in 2 weeks when we were seated. She remembered it and brought a candle with our desert and took a picture for us! So sweet! Overall it was a wonderful experience.

The food was outstanding. We enjoyed the sashimi, tuna tartare spring rolls, and spicy rock shrimp boa buns for starters. The miso cod and wasabi tuna tataki entrees were also excellent. The flavors were fantastic. Lauren our server was exceptional. She was very attentive and personable.
