About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Good for business meals
  • Charming
VALET PARKING $20 per car

Housed in a beautifully restored 1912 firehouse, Engine Co. No. 28 located 3 blocks from the Staples Center and the Los Angeles Convention center has been putting out appetite fires since 1989 with classic American dishes inspired by the regional cooking of firehouses across the country.

The menu features a "signature" Meatloaf, crispy hand-breaded fried chicken, a burger to remember and a great assortment of handmade cocktails, a consistently updated wine list, and a great draft beer selection.

The restaurant is reminiscent of the classic grills of San Francisco and New York - mahogany booths, granite bar, and original brass fire pole with eclectic old filament light bulbs to add to the motif.

This restaurant was fantastic!!! The food was so good. I was a little hesitant because I had read some reviews that the food wasn’t good. I don’t know where they ate but the food couldn’t have been better and we know good from bad. DO NOT hesitate to eat here! The food, staff, and atmosphere were great. Prices were very reasonable for the area. Wish I lived near the restaurant because I would go there often.

Made a reservation for Saturday at 11 am, got confirmation from Open Table twice (including the day before). Got to the restaurant on Saturday at 11 am, waited for 15 minutes, and the restaurant was closed! Called the restaurant, no one picked up. Very disappointing and very embarrassing since we came there bringing guests and we had to stand outside in 107 degree!

This establishment, in its day, was a great restaurant with historical significance given its location within the old fire station No 28. Over the years, the facility has more or less become outdated, run-down and suffers from an aging building plagued with AC issues. The food is still decent, but it’s lost traction to other new options in the area. But if you want to take-in a historical visit to the past, it’s still worth a visit. My latest visit ended with us showing up with a reservation and being turned away given the AC had gone out. It would have been nice if they sent a text to avoid having to make other plans at the door…..

Went for lunch on the Fr before Labor Day weekend. The place was mostly empty. More a function of morbund downtown post COVD than anything else.o. Great location and great space but almost no one there. The entrees (salmon and sea bass) were way better than expected. The beet salad we ordered for the table strangely came out after we were half way through our entrees. Otherwise, a great option for a business lunch along that part of Fgueroa.

Wonderful lunch with very nice and attentive service by part of the staff. The very lovely waitresses even surprised us with a free Birthday dessert and sang with us as well. Nice experience!

We really enjoyed our lunch at Engine Co 28. We had excellent service and our food was delicious. We don’t get downtown much, but this will bring us back.
