- JJohnToronto / Ontario •1 review5.0Dined 5 days agoOur dinner for four was excellent, with recognition that they'd only been open after taking over the space from Hexagon on Monday, so this was their first Saturday as Centro, with a new chef and staff. We shared starters of oysters, the hamachi crudo, scallops and beef tartare. The scallops were the star, perfectly done with a delightful butter-based sauce. The hamachi was also really good, helped and not overpowered by the sauce. Oysters were oysters. The tartare was very good but consensus at the table was nothing particularly stood out. For mains, two of us had the flat-iron hen in a really good piri-piri, very nicely balanced heat with perfectly done fingerlings. My wife had the striploin steak that was more than enough for her so shared. Cooked just right and the rapini was a nice complement. Our last diner, the pickiest foodie of the group, had the king salmon. His sense was it was fine, but nothing particularly distinctive. We shared the flourless chocolate torte which was hot, moist and very dark, but could have benefited from a coulis or some salt. The chocolate espresso cremeux blended in with no real contrast. The wine cellar is the old Hexagon cellar so very well stocked. Service was very good, friendly attentive, determined to please. Clearly a group with experience but some sense, understandably, that they're getting used to the room and each other. The room is largely unchanged from the Hexagon days, and there will be inevitable comparisons. We'd been to Hexagon a few times both before and after the Michelin star, and Centro is not at that level yet, (nothing at the scope of the famous duck breast or divine agnolotti) but neither are the prices. The chef, Richard Andino, is a veteran and wisely not trying to duplicate a complex tasting menu out of the gate. We will be back, and looking forward to some evolution as Chef Andino and his staff settles in.More infoCentro on the Square$$$$• Mediterranean• Oakville•4.7

I really appreciated that the restaurant texted me in advance to let me know that a few items on the menu were no longer available, as they were transitioning to their new summer menu. Always a pleasure to stop by, no matter the season.More infoSeason Six$$$$• Farm-to-table• Ossington•4.3
