Another superb meal at Little Owl, my second in two weeks! The market driven menu changes frequently to match the season. Last night, we started with a lovely lobster bisque that delivered seaside satisfaction without any heaviness--perfect for spring; and a textbook tuna tartare, sitting on a truffled parmesan crust and dusted with tiny bits of snowy egg white. We also indulged in a special--spectacular focaccia with a tangy olive caponata--available by the piece! Two of us had the chicken, which has long been on the menu and I hope never leaves. It's inspired by that Italian classic "chicken under a brick," but it's richly sauced a la Francaise and sits on beautiful tiny crunchy potatoes and asparagus. The other two had the halibut. This is a new preparation and a stunner. It's broiled and topped with a light, lemony pesto, and it sits on a summer salad of fresh corn, English peas and peashoots. I am not a big dessert person, but my tablemates were, so when they ordered the homemade gelato I ordered the cheesecake. It is a poem. Not a slice or a wedge, but a round snare drum of, yes, cheesecake, but somehow more like a cream cheese custard. Topped with a superb blueberry coulis, it was divine. The wine list is continuously updated and offers carefully selected bottles in all styles and at high and low price points. We drank a Spanish white and a light Spanish red that complimented the food perfectly. The service as always was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. Little Owl will soon be twenty years old. In a city where everything seems to change, this great restaurant grows and evolves. It is always itself and always a surprise. Bravo.
