The menu follows a Southern-fried meat-and-three concept, meaning diners order a meat, plus three sides. Those will include Ruthie’s mac and cheese, of course, but also white-soy-braised greens, stewed chickpeas and smoked cauliflower with a spicy soy glaze. “We’re going to be changing it a lot based on seasonality,” Hill says of the menu. “ Every vegetable has got to be fantastic because it has to stand on its own.” One thing that will help that: Hill is already growing all of the restaurant’s own herbs at his South Arlington community garden plot.

Ethiopian owner Meaza Zemedu, whose Meaza Restaurant, Cafe and Gourmet Grocery Store have been featured in such press outlets as the Washingtonian and the Washington Post, was born of humble roots. Meaza Zemedu started her business by supplying local Ethiopian stores with her home-baked injera bread, a crepelike staple of Ethiopian cuisine.Demand for the tangy bread grew, allowing her to open her majestic restaurant, which welcomes guests to dine on traditional Ethiopian fare. Northern Virginia Magazine heaped praise upon the menu, including the doro wat stew—the national dish of Ethiopia—which includes chicken, red pepper, garlic, and hard-boiled eggs. Many of Meaza’s dishes are flavored with purified, spiced Ethiopian butter, from the ye beg kikil—lamb stew in spicy sauce—to the kifto—ground beef traditionally served raw or rare and mixed with cardamom and a mitmita spice blend.

Our server, Cheryl (sp?), was terrific! She was a real pro: upbeat and friendly but not awkward (neither overly familiar nor obsequious). Offered her comments in a welcome way and generally seemed to have complete charge of a VERY busy space. The food was very good, especially the side we ordered (sprouts) as an appetizer. My scallop dish should have skipped the “snap peas” which were what most of us call edamame: they were quite tough and leathery, which didn’t play well with the tender quality of scallops (or anything!). If they’d stuck with the crunch of the asparagus and subbed in something else more digestible for the peas, they’d have a winner. My companion’s Portuguese Stew was a hit. The atmosphere is bustling and noisy: great for an energetic rather than quiet and romantic outing. Kids would have been welcome, too, I think. All in all, would definitely recommend!
