The Lexington is more than a restaurant, it’s an institution. Located on the corner of Lexington Parkway and Grand Avenue, this St. Paul community was the most fashionable at the turn of the 19th century. The St. Paul elite lived just blocks away and the first electric trolley brought visitors up and down Grand Avenue. The Lexington opened in 1935, after the end of prohibition, and was a popular neighborhood bar to gather and socialize. Previously operating as a speakeasy, the expansive wood panels were perfect for hiding a little booze and one can only imagine the shenanigans going on beyond the hidden staircase behind the coat check. For decades following, The Lex, as it’s called by locals and enthusiasts alike, was the place to be seen; business dealings, cocktail hours, and milestone celebrations were a regular occurrence for St. Paul socialites.

If you’re looking for a sign to book dinner at DeGidio’s, this is it. Everything about our experience was outstanding from start to finish. The food was fantastic, and honestly, we may never order without server recommendations again because ours absolutely nailed every single suggestion. She was cheerful, attentive, smiling the entire evening, and somehow managed to make us feel like regulars on our first visit. And the drinks? The “Oldest Fashioned” was next-level amazing — complete with one of those perfectly clear ice spheres that instantly makes you feel fancier than you are. Then dessert arrived and somehow things got EVEN better: bread pudding, tiramisu, and the most incredible twist on a chocolate chip ice cream sandwich. We were already planning our return before we finished the last bite. We drove 45 minutes to get to DeGidio’s, and I’d gladly do it again tomorrow. In fact, I hope my not-so-subtle hints to my husband are enough to make another date night there happen very soon. 10/10 — worth every mile, every bite, and every calorie.

Friday Wood‑Fired Pizza Challenge: Installment #5 This week’s stop on our Friday Wood‑Fired Pizza Challenge took us to the Downtowner Woodfire Grill in St. Paul, and it quickly stood out from the rest. Looking back at the previous weeks, the Downtowner easily had the nicest décor so far. The customer service was absolutely top‑notch—just as warm and friendly as El Horatio’s—but the ambience gave it a more polished, elegant feel. We tried the Chicken Artichoke and Apple pizzas, both reasonably priced and genuinely excellent. In fact, the crust was a highlight—it might actually be the best crust we’ve had during the entire challenge. One thing that really set the Downtowner apart is that, if pizza isn’t what you’re craving, you have options. This was the only stop so far where you could order something like a steak, while the other places we’ve visited have been strictly pizza parlors. We also appreciated the choice of side salads to pair with the pizzas—fresh, well done, and a nice addition. Overall, the pricing was very reasonable, especially considering the quality, atmosphere, and service. Another strong contender in our ongoing pizza journey. Sidebar. The maitre d did recommend the smoked salmon Pizza but I couldn't bring myself to order it!
