Bad, dirty, unsafe area! My car has been broken into. I will never come again!
Decent food. Great service. A little uninspired menu. Great dessert.
Great! We will be back!
Mockingbird is such a gem in the downtown area. Great spot for a business lunch or a fun dinner with friends.
Let me begin by saying that we love this restaurant. That’s why we chose it to celebrate our anniversary. Our evening started promising. We ordered our drinks and the brussels sprouts. The drinks arrived promptly and were delish! The brussels arrived 30 minutes later. Although we saw some delivered to two ladies who literally just sat down. Not sure if the server ordered ours on the wrong table or if the food runner took them to the wrong table. While we were still waiting for the sprouts we ordered our salad and mains. Salad arrived promptly but still no sprouts. After finishing our appetizers we waited, and waited, and waited for our mains. Our server Jesse promised after 20 minutes that our food would be right out. And 45 minutes later it did...ICE COLD. At this point we just ate cold food because we didn’t want to wait anymore. It was 9:15 and we had been there since 7:30. He comped our dessert because he knew he blew it. Unfortunately it still left a bad taste in my mouth. Next time we’ll just sit at the bar...
First courses were fantastic. As is increasingly the case at California cuisine restaurants, entrees were disappointing. Ingredients heavy and unbalanced, esp the clams and chorizo. I would return and just order from the top of the menu.
Very noisy inside compounded by road construction in front took away from the experience. A big party seemed to throw off the organization and attention to seating other guests.
Lovely decor and ambiance. High ceilings so noise travels. Unique and delicious dishes but small portions. Minimal carbs on main dishes so not very filling.
We've been there as a duo, a trio and as a large party. The food never disappoints. One of our faves for sure!
I was told the food was excellent and it was. What Downtown needs a white tablecloth restaurant
Love the vibe and the food was really good. The one gentle complaint would be the constant reminders of our reservations via Open Table. We wanted our luncheon tab split three ways for a small group of five but were advised not to.
The food was delicious! The Crispy Brussel Sprouts, a must have.
Service very timely and pleasant.
A better selection of wine would be great!!
Will go back.
Great food, great service, good ambiance, a little loud, challenging location
The Brussels sprouts were outstanding but everything else seemed just ok. I was surprised they served fries with the steak and didn’t allow a substitute. The wait staff was fine but not exceptional in any way. He forgot things when asked. It was fine overall but I wouldn’t go out of my way to go back.
Another delicious night at Mockingbird. This was our second visit to the restaurant and the menu and service did not disappoint. We love this place before a show at the Fox and will definitely be back!
I love Mockingbird! Been several times now and it's always a delight!
Nice place for romantic conversation. Candlelight is a nice touch. I would suggest it.
Our server was very friendly but our food came out at 2 separate times. It was getting cold so we had to eat without the rest of the party (reservationfor 6 adults). Nothing bad about the food but nothing amazing either.
The service here was amazing and they were very accommodating! Food was ok in my opinion. Not something to brag about, but good service will always bring me back for other things.... like WINE! :-)
Everyone enjoyed their meals.
This is a special place with true soul. I felt completely welcome from the moment I walked through the door. The staff makes you feel like family.
The food was outstandingly fresh and delicious with a strong emphasis on seasonal produce. Incredible!
Good food. As with many restaurants, the main dishes weren't quite as good as the appetizers, which were excellent. The service was great - it was my friend's birthday and when they brought her an ice cream sundae with almonds sprinkled on top, then learned that she is allergic, they promptly brought out another. Both free of charge. The space is lofty with a huge bar, hip enough but not trying too hard. All in all we had a good experience and will be back!
To start off our date night, my wife and I were absolutely excited and salivating to try Mockingbird after we reviewed the online menu.
The experience started off nicely with a tasty, well mixed cocktail. Then came the duck liver pate, which was absolutely delicious.
Then the train came off the tracks. Wait staff disappeared. But not exactly. They were just hanging out in the service area. Even after direct eye to eye contact, totally ignored.
Why were we not surprised that our meal came served cold. When pasta cools, it congeals into a solid block of pasta. And that’s what I was served. Across the table, my wife’s meal was at least a few degrees warmer than mine.
Unfortunately, Mockingbird will become another failed restaurant in Oakland. Unless the owner takes control and manages and trains the staff. It doesn’t matter how fantastic the food is if the timing is off and the staff don’t care about creating an experience for the guests.
And quite frankly, after tasting the food, they are not creating anything memorable and just replicating what a dozen restaurants are already doing.
The food was good, but the server was slow, he just stood in a corner while my drink was ready and just sat at the bar for 10 minutes ... and he got it wrong, I ordered Vodka and he served me Gin and he blamed the Bartender
Wednesday lunch, moderately full restaurant. Friendly, prompt service, no particular polish, but wouldn't expect it in this restaurant. Fried brussel sprouts were a hit - of course - as was the chicken Kale salad and the trout salad. Asparagus and green garlic tartine was a bit tough to chew, but tasty. Vegetable tagine had distinct cumin component, but it worked. A nice lunch spot in downtown Oakland.
I hate brussel sprouts and mockingbird had the best brussel sprouts I have ever tried! Everything was perfect.
The mayo aoli had no taste, not the usually their good garlic aoli..
Wayyyyy over priced for just marginally above average food. Go to one of the many better restaurants in the bay.
Great option for this area when seeking a good lunch option for a business lunch. The food is good but pricey. Two of us had lunch, no alcohol, one appetizer and two entrees and total with tip was $108.
Managed to finally nail down a buyout for 15 people. It was a massive dinner for all of my cousins and it went perfectly. The table was up in the mezzanine and included all items off the menu a-la-carte and alcohol as well which was an amazing deal. Our server was also lovely and very knowledgeable. He helped us work out the best options and ordering for everyone as we had one guest who was vegan. Truly wonderful experience, and the food was exceptional. Will definitely be back again.
Service was a little off tonight...one too spicy, the other a little bland. But will be back again !!
Good food but service was below average. It took a long time to get our food
Excellent food- all but one of our dishes were exceptional with an added flavor or preparation that was unexpected yet delicious. One dish (vegetable tangine) wasn’t superb mostly because it was measured against the others.
Atmosphere is nice- spacious and modern.
The service we had didn’t match the food or ambiance. It was fine but was lacking attentiveness and a bit of common sense.
Awesome Mother’s Day brunch, friendly owner, yummy food, kid friendly
Casual downtown bistro with friendly staff. Servers were friendly and prompt. The brussell sprout appetizer was a highlight. The vegetable tangible was tasty and the vegetables tasted fresh. My wife had the Morrocan chicken. Tasty but a bit over cooked and dry. Overall, definitely deserving of another try.
I love Mockingbird! Never a bad lunch! I have had salads mostly because they’re always a nice combination of savory, crunchy, pickled & very light dressing. Fries are always delicious!
I’ve been seated upstairs once & that was wonderful.
Downstairs it’s hard to hear what your dining companions are saying even if they’re right next to you.
I’m looking forward to Saturday brunch!
Our experience at Mockingbird was overall good. The biggest complaint is the noise level. We choose it for a business dinner and it was EXTREMELY loud. We sat at a round table in the middle of the room and my chair kept getting bumped as people walked by. Food came out quickly and was very good - service was decent. However, their wine was terrible - both my co-worker and myself had to order something else. I wouldn't run back to Mockingbird but if someone wanted to go there, I wouldn't say no.
Exceptionally loud! Found it difficult to communicate to wait staff. Seating uncomfortable too..... disappointed.
Entree of trout was excellent. However the brussel sprouts didn't quite live up to the hype. Although we were seated upstairs, where I think the noise level was less than downstairs, it got significantly louder and louder and two large parties merged on the area. Thus by the end of the meal, I was quite tired of trying to communicate across our table. Is there not a way that restaurants can provide quieter places to eat, especially for those of us who are starting to age and appreciate good conversation over an energetic atmosphere?
