Aya is definitely a treat for our family. We always love going here when we have the opportunity. The service is great and this is not the kind of sushi you can get just anywhere.

This is arguably my favorite Japanese restaurant in the Houston area. The attention to detail, helpfulness of the staff, and quality of food is off the charts. Each dish appeals to all 5 senses, and I appreciate how much flavors, textures, and the combination of those is taken into account in their dish preparation and presentation. Truly an elite dining experience.

Extremely slow service. Especially since the restaurant was at about 1/3 capacity. Had to ask for sauces multiple times and remind waiter about drink orders multiple times.

Reserved a 7:30pm slot for Aya Sushi. Arrived 10 minutes early, but was not seated until 30 minutes later. While waiting in the bar, no one came to help us or asked us if we wanted drinks. During the 30 minute wait, several table were open, empty. No sense of organization as some people where seat, but arrived later than us. After getting seated, courses came at very different times, varying from 15mins or less than 5mins. Food was okay, but nothing stood out from a regular and a lot cheaper place. Would not recommend this place to anyone. The waiters were very nice though.

The omakase experience was OK. My wife and I had a reservation at 7:00. We showed up on time, nevertheless, we still had to wait 20 minutes to be seated. We were asked to wait by the bar where we could grab a drink. And during our wait, no one took our order. When we got seated the hostess said that we had 2 hours for the experience, but people were taking their time, which is why we got seated late. In a way, it kind of made us feel we needed to try to rush through the experience and not overstay our welcome. The food itself was OK. One of the courses was a little dry.

We made this reservation in hopes to have a really good experience since we’re frequent sushi lovers… We requested to sit at the chef‘s table, the chef never came to the table, on our way to the restaurant we hit some traffic. They started calling us four minutes into the reservation. Most restaurants have a 15 minute grace period. As we sat down, the waiter was very nice and explained everything, but seemed like he was in a rush. We tried the tasting menu, which I did not realize was gonna be a lot of items from the kitchen and not as many sushi items. Next time I wouldn’t have done that because I’m not at a sushi restaurant to eat chicken meatballs or fried chicken. We did not realize that the restaurant closed at 9 PM so our experience literally was 45 minutes. The check was on the table. We were given a bag to put our sake in to take home and we’re rushed out of the door very disappointing. The best thing we had was the crème brûlée cheesecake. Not sure if I would go back though.

FAQs

The ambience is upscale, modern, and refined, guests consistently praise the elegant decor, comfortable temperature, and intimate yet roomy layout. Many describe a quiet, conversation-friendly environment with attentive, knowledgeable staff and a polished bar program. Expect a fine-dining vibe suited to special occasions, dates, or focused sushi appreciation.

Business casual is the stated dress code. Guests often describe the restaurant as slightly upscale and tasteful, so smart casual attire is a good choice for dining here, especially for omakase or special occasions.

Yes, the team appears accommodating and guests report staff arranging celebrations and thoughtful touches. For omakase or chef’s counter requests, the restaurant asks that you inquire via email (reservations@ayasushi.com) because the sushi bar is reserved and some items are prepared in advance. If you have dietary restrictions or celebration notes, contact them when booking so they can advise and tailor the experience.

Yes, Aya Sushi is an excellent choice for date night. Guests frequently praise its elegant, intimate atmosphere, beautifully presented dishes, and attentive service, making it ideal for special occasions and romantic evenings. The chef’s omakase and curated cocktails add a memorable, elevated touch. Note it’s fine-dining sushi in Bellaire, so expect a pricier menu and a refined vibe, great for anniversaries or a celebratory night out.

The best time depends on your goals: for a lively, budget-friendly visit try happy hour (guests call it a bargain with great small plates and drinks). For a quieter, more deliberate omakase or date-night experience, choose midweek evenings or lunch service, guests often recommend weekday visits to avoid holiday or special-event crowds. Avoid high-demand nights (Valentine’s Day and major holidays) when service and pacing have been reported as strained.

Information about a formal waiting list isn’t provided. Guests do report long waits, being asked to wait at the bar, and occasional overbooking on busy nights (Valentine’s Day), so reservations are strongly recommended. If you anticipate delays or want to be put on a waitlist, call the restaurant directly, staff appear responsive and often manage seating from the bar area.

Busiest: special occasions and holidays (Valentine’s Day is called out), weekend dinner service, and popular omakase seatings, guests report long waits and overbooked nights. Quietest: weekday lunches and midweek dinners tend to be calmer; many guests recommend weekday visits or happy hour for a more relaxed experience and better timing of service.

Midweek (Tuesday–Thursday) is often the best choice for a refined, unrushed experience, quieter dining rooms and reliable service make these days ideal for omakase or a relaxed dinner. If you want lively bargains and small plates, consider happy hour offerings. Weekends and holidays draw larger crowds and can result in longer waits or pacing issues, according to guests.
