At Barshu we want to bring you the best of the authentic flavours of Sichuan. So look out, among others, for the seductive 'fish-fragrant'combination of pickled chilies, ginger, garlic and spring onion, the addictive fieriness of 'numbing-and-hot' flavored dishes, and the refreshing tones of a 'ginger-juice'sauce.
We hope you enjoy your food.
What Insiders Are Saying
Barshu is the consensus number one option around town when you want to eat spicy Sichuan-style food in central London.
A great place to go for authentic Sichuan cookery. Also great to share lots of dishes and sample as much as possible! I recommend the soft shell crab and many of the vegetable dishes like the green beans.
A good restaurant for couples and also groups.
Early booking means the place was very quite but service was quick, attentive and appreciated.
Food was good - we had beef, scallops and inside out sea bass (yummy). Only downside was the limited choice of wine by the glass.
Unfortunately their interpretation of hot Szechuan food is to pile on loads of red chillier, so much it’s difficult to find the main ingredient of the dish (the main ingredient is chill) and very expensive for what you get. Not a patch on Szechuan Folk , better food and so much better value.
Food was delicious, room was amazing and was disappointed three people in my group dropped out as the restaurant made a lot of effort creating a lovely environment for us
Really authentic Sichuan cuisine! Loved it
Service was a bit abrupt and had to move table halve way through. Food was good in places, but one dish was so heavily acidic it ruined the experience and tastebuds. Disappointing
Brilliant as always. Delicious spicy food and very friendly staff.
Amazing food. We got a round table at the corner which is perfect for friends gathering
Chinese New year
Visited with wife for Chinese NY lunch disappointed by how quiet it was compared to some other similar Restaurant’s in area.
Service was ok but considering it was lunch & all we had was tea to accompany our meal the price was a little high food portions were however generous enough & the Ma La Sichuan flavour was very evident in most of our dishes albeit being honest the flavour is a bit samey & can be a little overpowering just our personal taste.
Maybe not a lunch time establishment possibly better choice for dinner.
Horrible greeting on arrival vreated bad vibe straight away. When the waitress arrived with sticky menus and laminated pictures of the food, we knew it was time to leave. Draw your own conclusions
Great food as always! Would go back again and again
Delicious food with great spicing. Only downside is we ordered the Meat Dry Wok and there was very little meat in it - mainly vegetables. What we got was excellent but not what we expected.
Went there about 8 years ago and didn't enjoy it then, came to try again as I kept hearing people talking about it. Disappointed again as before, will not come back again. Food is ordinary (I'm Chinese), was told only had the table for 1.5 hours, bit checked email confirmation it was for 2 hours. We had the table for 2 hours at the end but didn't enjoy the evening as it was rushed.
Amazing food, great service and good value! The staff are always lovely and every dish is delicious. Service is really fast so it's the perfect place to go if you need a quick bite.
If you want authentic Sichuan in London then this is the place. English is a second language for the staff and many customers.
Lovely Szechuan food, great service, and quiet enough to converse with friends.
A good place for dinner - quiet and yet lively. We were 5 and they gave us a spacious table. Service was efficient and corteous. Food was excellent and we enjoyed some interesting dishes.
Outstanding Sichuan food - probably the best in London
I usually love eating there because of the atmosphere but this time they were two groups of about 10 people each next to us. And both were very noisy especially the group who was celebrated a birthday they were talking very loud and shouting like children on a playground.
Very inconvenient for two people who would like a quite or less noisy atmosphere...
The service was good and we were given a private room as we were a large party, which was nice, but not very nicely decorated. The menu is very enticing, however the quality of the food was quite disappointing. A lot of filling in with vegetables around the actual food and not much of the main dish itself. Soft shell crab was delicious but sea bass was disappointing.
Dinner with friends and we wanted spice and flavour. It was perfect and ticked ever box. x
One of the best schechuan Chinese food restaurants in town ! I will be back
Absolutely gorgeous food as always. Very authentic and really fantastic flavours. One of our favourite restaurants in London.
Again! 2nd visit in 3 days - great spicy Chinese food restaurant
This was just great. Quality. Spicy. Fun. Authentic. Loved it
Lovely spicy and authentic Sichuan grub - certainly warmed us up on a wet and miserable day!
This is a truly authentic Sichuan restaurant, be warned, the level of spice is exquisitely hot, think top of a volcano and then ascend to the cumulonimbus above. There are layers of flavour and physical experience within the spice (Sichuan pepper being a different experience from chili for example). And yes you will see through time. If you go, the dan dan noodles and the smashed cucumber are a must, I've tried replication many times at home (and failed). This remains my favorite and I'd give it a strong recommendation.
Szechuan Cuisine, hot and spicy. I will return. Its in Soho. Near to all theatres.
Food wasn't what I expected. Somethings we ordered was out of our taste range. Overall good, but won't go back.
I have not been to Barshu for a long time which used to be one of my favorite restaurants in London. During this visit we found the food taste was rather bland, quite disappointing compared with what it was. I doubt I will go back soon.
Excellent introduction to Szechuan cuisine. Gorgeous selection of plates to sample. Soft shell crab was fantastic.
An interesting and unusual experience
Great venue, large choice of dishes that are served quite quickly (large portions) some really unusual choices, more focussed on their Chinese customers but lovely to see them on the menu.
We had a prawn dish with cashew a sea bass with delicious farmhouse rice, Pak Choi and fried asparagus.
Toilets were clean down some stairs (quite a climb)
Staff are very polite if one or two very minor issues over communication.
Nice visit great food and unusual mocktails
Ordered three dishes; Sichuan chicken, dan-dan noodles and dumplings in chili oil. The noodles and dumplings were ok, but not enough spice or chili oil. The Sichuan chicken was pretty tasteless, the oil didn't give the numbing heat was expecting. Overall, the whole approach seems very toned down in terms of flavour and heat for Sichuan food, not sure why.
Fantastic food. Quick service and not outrageous prices
Very overpriced and average food and service. Noodles were terrible and nothing like the photo on menu. Incredibly limited vegetarian options for my friend. I was disappointed as I had found very good reviews online in advance.
Authentic Szechuan cuisine at the heart of Soho, with all food as expected were numbing spice and peppery. The signature seabass in hot oil dish is must try for foodies, although do mind the price tag. Reading some of the comments, i didn't high expectations with the service but was pleasantly surprised how helpful and accommodating waiters were. do observe the time limit during peak hours (around 6:30pm to 8:30pm) and they might just ask you vacate your table after 1.5 hours.
Good Szechuan food in the heart of Soho. Spicy but not mala hot. All the standard Szechuan favorites. Very good tripe.
A huge menu with few appetizers. it only tasted of pepper, nothing else. No ambience, unfriendly service. Not a nice evening.
Great food - the spicy beef dish is particularly good, if you can handle the heat.
