At Blackfriars we serve a classic but gutsy traditional/historic British menu using local and seasonal ingredients. There’s an abundance of great produce all around us; mouth-watering aged beef, award-winning cheeses, really good organic vegetables, super-fresh fish and local beers. Join us at Blackfriars Cookery School for a dynamic lunch with our 1-hour Express cookery classes. In this hands-on workshop you will dive into the flavours of the Middle East by preparing the classic dish, Shakshuka. The name shakshuka comes from the Arabic word "shakshak," meaning "to mix things up," which perfectly describes this hearty dish of eggs poached in a rich tomato sauce with olive oil, peppers, onions and garlic. Shakshuka is incredibly versatile and you can customise it with ingredients like potatoes, broad beans, artichokes, courgettes, minced meat, or chorizo. In this class, you’ll prepare a special version featuring Merguez sausage and pistachios for a flavourful twist.

The food was great, however the unnecessary rushing of ordering, starter and in to main meant we’d been there for 45 mins and had both courses. The restaurant was not full and the food was obviously near ready to serve. It wasn’t what we had hoped for or expected for a relaxing meal out. We had to ask the staff multiple times to slow things down, which wasn’t ideal. Would be great if this could be worked on as everything else about the meal was great.

I took part in a cooking class put on by Blackfriars over 3.5 hours. Six of us, led by staff member Cathy, learned how to prepare and cook a Malaysian meal, and the experience was wonderful. I will definitely take another cooking class at Blackfriars.
