Recently recognized as a recommended restaurant in the very first Michelin Guide to the American South.

Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse, where Japanese Soul Food meets American BBQ by James Beard Nominated Chef Michael Lewis. “Japanese Smokehouse” is defined as merging Japanese ingredients and flavors with American BBQ techniques, and everything in between.

Menu highlights include light and refreshing dishes such as Wagyu Tataki with house kimchee, yuzu kosho and savory soy or Tuna Takaki with fire roasted peppers + ponzu, to bolder flavors such as Smoked Pastrami Short Rib with toasted rye, fire roasted kimchi + yuzu pickles. We are currently open 7 days a week.

Please note, our dining room consists of booths, regular tables and high-tops. We will try our best to accommodate you at your prefer location, but sometimes it is not possible due to party size. Our outdoor tables can be requested but not guaranteed when booking on open table.

(Haiku backwards) Think of a combo between Japanese soul food and American BBQ flavors for an amazing experience! Every bite was delicious and love variety of shareable plates!     The food was good, the service was good and the booth was comfortable for 2 couples. The noise level was a bit loud for conversation. They would do well to spend money to fix acoustics but they are not the worst.

    Overall, it was a good experience. We got the chefs tasting menu, which we wouldn’t recommend (although several reviews rave about it- perhaps it was an off night). We had 3 things come out at a time on top of one another (barely fitting on the table- all arriving within 30 seconds of one another) and then 15- 20 minutes would go by without any dishes. Seemed like it could have been spaced out a little better. We would potentially reorder 3 out of the 9 dishes. Everything else was fine, but we wouldn’t order again. Would definitely go back to try other things, but wasn’t the experience we expected.

    We chose Ukiah to celebrate our 36th wedding anniversary and it was a lovely evening from start to finish. The food, wine, service, vibe were all outstanding and we felt very special and celebrated.

    The service was great but the food left a lot to be desired considering the price tag. Small portions and nothing overwhelmingly creative. The hype really got me excited for this establishment but left feeling like I would have rather had gone elsewhere!
