Caroline Restaurant Ratings and Reviews
we were sat in the cafe area/ hotel lobby even though we had made reservations. Server forgot about us when the dining room got busy. took forever to get check
Engagement celebration dinner
Great downtown Austin spot for a business lunch or any occasion. Would go back.
The restaurant is part of the Aloft hotel - not stated anywhere on the website. It’s a typical hotel restaurant with mediocre food and prices that don’t match. We ordered “spicy deviled eggs,” which were neither spicy nor deviled in the traditional sense. They use mayonnaise leaving the whole plate extremely bland. Our son normally loves pasta with butter - but even this choice left him eating some of my steak - the only thing reasonably ok. Although thin and full of fat, the taste was decent. My husband ordered chicken schnitzel- bland and more breading then chicken.
Upstairs at Caroline is nice. However, it doubles as the hotel check-in and bar.
Overall it’s a place Austinites should skip leaving it for the conference crowds. And even then I’d hope visitors dine elsewhere.
Don’t bother. In an almost empty restaurant, they seated us in a dark corner by the door and promptly forgot about us. After being seated for awhile I finally had to get up to remind them that they had seated us. No effort whatsoever to provide timely service even though the place was half empty. Food was nothing impressive.
We had a gathering of 8 women. We had a wonderful experience! The food was delicious, we were all pleased with our food. Wonderful entrees, appetizers and drinks. We also had fabulous service, I wish I could remember the waitresses name. She was awesome.
Great food, awesome service, the place is really nice. The Mexican Iced coffee and the chicken and waffle were really good!
I was brought a different latte than what I ordered. The waiter had to ask 3 times what we ordered. Our food order ended up correct.
GREAT food and service. Too loud for conversation!
We had a delightful dinner: Chicken Enchiladas... wow! Delmonico Steak.........SUPERB... Salmon was tasty.
But why must it be so loud that we couldn't even hear each other talk? Other than that, we had a good time and really enjoyed the food. Service was excellent. It's clear that the restaurant is well managed.
Great food and service. Was in town 2 times and ate there 3 times.
Had a wonderful birthday meal with girl friends. Loved the menu. Everything we tried was delicious. Highly recommend the tuna tartar tacos and the halibut! Wine list could use a little more variety but otherwise we loved Caroline.
Everything was delicious and service is GREAT; I was just had a little sticker shock, since we all drank water.
We arrived a 10 minutes before our reservation. The restaurant was not full and we were asked to wait for our table to be ready. We waited over 15 minutes and then were finally seated at a table that had been ready when we arrived. Meanwhile customers that did not have reservations were seated before us. This makes no sense to me. After we were seated it took about ten minutes for our server to greet us. The saving grace is the food was actually pretty good.
The food was amazing!! The service could have been a bit more attentive- the food cane out quick but the drinks took much longer than they should have and then the bill was brought quicker than anything! We’ll be back and hopefully have better service bc we really enjoyed the menu. The bar upstairs was great!
This was my first time at Caroline. The food was wonderful and I will definitely be back. We were seated, however, in the bar area near the front door. The passing "traffic" of people arriving and departing as well as the happy people in the bar made it a tad "busy" for my liking. Next time, I would simply ask to be seated elsewhere. The ambiance was cool urban and servers were friendly although a tad disorganized. The food really was excellent - I had the salmon - can't wait to go back and try some of the other offerings.
We had the best service. Our waitress was fantastic and knowledgeable! Went for a girl’s brunch and our already planning on going back soon.
Burgers were undercooked (sent back) and server seemed a little in the the weeds. Bathrooms are a hike from dining area. $10 valet for restaurant
Our party of five dined at Carolines this evening to celebrate a birthday. The service by Sarah was great and the food was exceptionally tasty all the way from the appetizers (which included the fantastic deviled eggs) through the main courses of steak, salmon and chicken and finally ending with the strawberry shortcake and blueberry cobbler deserts. The valet parking was convenient and easy helping to make both arrival and departure a breeze. We will definitely be back.
Food was pretty good, overall ambiance and decor was incredible. They did run out of wine glasses and had 3 items on the fairly limited menu that they were out of which was strange for 8:15 on a Saturday night.
Service was abysmal. It took forever to get a drink order in. Then it took forever to get our drinks. Finally, somehow our entrees were ready before the dip appetizer we ordered. We had to end up canceling it because we were running late to a movie and didn’t want to have to wait on it. It was really inexcusable how slow the service was and ridiculous that a dip appetizer couldn’t be out on the table before the two main entree’s. They were not very busy at all. The food was very good but definitely not worth the bad service.
OK, but fell short of the expectations
I had an opportunity to be downtown on a Friday evening and wanted to try out someplace new. I chose Caroline because of the inventive menu.
My reservation was for 7:15 and the restaurant was about half full - enough to be bustling but now crazy busy. We were a party of three, but one person took a little longer to arrive.
After a few minutes, the server contacted us about our drink order. It took us a bit longer to peruse the cocktail menu so she had to come around a second time. We put in our drink and appetizer order and waited. It took quite a while to get the drinks (a beer and one cocktail) but not too long, just longer than expected considering a half full restaurant.
The appetizer, the corn dip was different from the usual fare and quite good.
Meanwhile, my third companion arrived. I had to point out to our server that the third diner also needed an appetizer plate. Not big deal, but also not something I should have to do.
I ordered the green chile chicken enchiladas. I don't care for raw onions so I asked the server that I did not want onions. The server replied that there were onions in the accompanying pico de gallo. I said that was ok.
Unfortunately I did not expect that my enchiladas would be completely covered by pico de gallo. The overpowering taste of the pico completely overwhelmed the chicken enchiladas.
I had finished my drink before the entrees were delivered (by staff) but it took a while to flag down the server to order another beer.
My companions entrees, Halibut, and Schnitzel, were quite tasty.
Overall, I liked the food, with the exception of the pico swamped enchiladas, the cocktails, and vibrant ambiance, but the service was never up to the level expected.
Baked chicken wings are delicious. Fun cocktails. Convenient downtown location, especially for shows at the Paramount.
The corn dip and chicken schnitzel were outstanding!
Tried Caroline for lunch, came back for dinner ... very good both times
Service was extremely slow, we waited 30 min for non alcohol drinks (and they were not busy)Food was very good and we enjoyed the atmosphere.
We went for Christmas and it was a cool unique place to eat. They had their regular and a Christmas menu. It was laid back yet trendy. I would go back, well priced and delish!
Great options, great service. Always a great time at Carolines.
Very nice and relaxing place with great food. Will definitely go back.
We sat in the restaurant downstairs and the food was good and has great service. Everything was very good.
It was a really good experience. The guys at the front desk could be nicer but otherwise, the waitress was very kind. I loved the food and ambiance.
Great Thanksgiving Lunch! My kids gots Chicken and waffles and I got the Traditional Turkey dinner special. I love the look of the restaurant. The service was great and I want to go back for their regular menu.
Very tasty Brussels Sprout salad and excellent Chicken Schnitzel !
They accommodated our growning list of friends from 4 to 8....it's a newcomer to Austin, but we think a great keeper ! Outside terrace too for warmer weather.
Too bad that the restroom is way up on the SECOND floor.
We ate here before going to a show at the Paramount. The food was very good - enjoyed the deviled eggs and burrata appetizers, thought all of the entrees - salmon, crispy halibut and arugula salad with chicken - were prepared well. The only snag was that the bar service was s-s-s-s-l-l-l-o-o-o-w-w-w. We might have had two drinks if it hadn't taken 10 minutes to get our first one, and that is the second time that has happened. Last time, I ordered a second glass of wine when our dinner was delivered, and I was complete and ready to pay before the wine got there. I don't eat that fast.
Overall our experience was ok. Food was good, service was poor to non-existent. I was told that there would be an up-charge for substituting fruit, which I said was fine. But when my meal arrived the waitress had simply charged me for a side of fruit and did not sub so the potatoes came anyway. I was told this was not an option. If that's the policy, it should be stated upfront vs. sticking a patron with a $7 Dixie cup of fruit.
Excellent in every regard except the service was very slow. Had a great brunch. Best Juevos Rancheros I have had in a very long time! Would definitely go back. Also loved the cold mexican coffee. Can't go wrong here.
Took an hour to get our food. I do believe it was an accident but it was frustrating because the server just stopped coming over to our table until our food arrived. Situation could have been handled better. Manager did apologize and take care of our appetizer since we waited so long.
Food and drinks were good but I've never experienced worse service from everyone on staff at this restaurant. Service was terrible from the start - from having to wait 15 minutes to sit at a table we had reserved, to waiting 20 minutes for drinks, to taking 30 full minutes to deliver our checks -- only to find out they had charged all of our checks the wrong amount which then took an additional 20 minutes to fix the situation. The manager and two waiters were rude and unconcerned when we tried to express our frustration.
Service was awful. Our waiter was incompetent and we had to demand a change. Took over 3 hours for brunch and sub par food.
In town for my daughters wedding
