What Insiders Are Saying
If you find yourself in East Austin after work, hit up Chicon best for happy hour drinks and snacks.
The food is great. I would prefer more vegetarian entree options and a more reasonable price for the vegetarian fare. Great service. The noise was high but there was a large party that appeared to be a sorority so without them it would’ve been quieter. Will definitely return.
Everything was delicious, service great, too bad they are closing.
Overall, a great experience! Food, services and beverage were all on point. Our favorite dish was their ode to broccoli and cheese, but all of their offerings were well cooked and well composed. We will definitely return.
We were a group of eight visiting Austin for a bachelorette party. We went to Chicon for brunch on our last day and were very pleased with our experience. The ambience of the restaurant was very cute and funky. It was a fun vibe, but not too loud which was nice. Our server was really good, and the menu had plenty of options for vegetarians and meat-eaters alike. We thought the coffee was excellent which is always a plus, and the $2 mimosas were great! I would highly recommend Chicon for brunch. If I lived in Austin I would definitely go back!
Yum yum yum yum
At 10:30 am we had to forego our outside table because the heat of the day was coming on. The good news is that Chicon was able to adjust and seat us, the downside was that it got quite noisy and the table conversation got limited to only people sitting next to each other could talk to one another. Cross table talk was too difficult. When it's busy in there, its loud, so be ready for that. Our waiter, Ben, was great. The service here is always top-notch.
Chicon is always a good bet. They've changed the decor since I was there last. Seems more casual which is fine by me. Solid food, good cocktails, lovely service.
Chicon is another stylish restaurant with stylish fare—we loved the Brussels sprouts and the charred avocado, and the chicken sandwich was delicious. The lighting over our table created a glare that was wearying after a while, and the French press coffee tried our patience with its wait time, but the overall experience was excellent.
I love Chicon. There’s a few things taken off of the menu that I was super disappointed about and were kind of the reason that I came.
Had requested standard and not high top in my reservation & they tried to seat us initially in a high top table.
Frittata was rubbery from being over cooked . Service & food slow in coming out. Enjoyed in the past even when it was called Gardner, but disappointing this time around.
A small but well thought out menu with breakfast staples and some great twists. My personal favorites were the monkey bread with the jalapeno chutney, the cheese grits, and the $2 mimosas!
Always a good time even though it’s far too loud inside. I usually bring people here to share a few appetizers and their 36oz T-Bone steak. It’s a fair deal with an array of sauces and small portion sides included. Now the steak comes only with a small stack of onion rings, and it’s far less impressive than it was before. Luckily the charred avocado plate comes with a full avocado, but oddly they’ve taken away the flat bread it’s meant to be eaten with.
Back to the steak... they were out of steak during my visit, so we got a few appetizers and drove over to Justine’s for a complete meal.
The waiter was not very kind. He gave no options other than bacon or potatoes even if I asked him for vegetables... he said there were no vegetables to offer.
one of my favorite restaurants in austin, special occasion with friends in town, had a fabulous evening, food, service & setting
The kitchen was a little slow
Excellent food quality and unusual recipes.
So.good. everything was fantastic. An Austin-bred restaurant that is here to stay!
Everything was great! My big dinner plans for their other spot Contigo fell through, but I got lucky and was able to book this reservation with only about 24 hours notice. The party was for me but I had to arrive late, and there was no problem seating our party of 15 without my being there. The staff split up the tickets before taking orders which was a huge relief. The servers were helpful and attentive. The drinks, veggie sides, and shareable plates were all delicious. The atmosphere was hip, and though there were others dining around us it was spacious enough to feel like we had the place to ourselves. I would definitely recommend this for a large party, or just for a nicely-lit date spot with someone special.
Great burger and really nice waitstaff. Really loud space made conversation hard at times.
The burger can't be beat. Oddly, the adults ordered the burger, while our child loved the skirt steak. Lots of good veggie sides options filled things out nicely: zucchini, avocado, brussel sprouts. The Moscow Mule mocktail is a nice non-alcoholic beverage.
The food was good; the drinks were ok. Not all of the order actually arrived from the kitchen.
Overall, it was good. The drinks were good and unique. The food was tasty. The high top tables were not comfortable at all. I’d go back for another try.
The service at Chicon was incredible. Everyone was so polite and accommodating and it really helped make the event special.
The food was also amazing and really high quality.
I genuinely can’t recommend Chicon enough.
The food was good and the drinks were excellent, but it took over an hour our main courses to arrive. When we did start receiving our meal, a few members of the party received cold food. The restaurant didn’t seem busy enough to justify the wait.
Everything was really good with a small caveat. The Sichuan wings are really really spicy in a different way! They use Sichuan peppercorns and make your mouth tingle... People either love them or hate them and most of our group were not fans! Beware!
Seated us before 7. No waitress until after 7 and then no happy hour offered. Pathetic. Service overall was not up to par. Food was good nice place bit angry customers don’t return. Dropped a load of cash but not next time.
1/2 price burgers for the win! What a great place for a casual business meal with a larger group.
Burger night was great, and the fried Brussels sprouts were amazing.
This was our second time to Chicon with our family. The Easter brunch was very tasty and served family style. The was a full restaurant and the loud, but I would go back again.
Family style brunch felt like it was a little over valued. However we did get great service, and got compensated with migas and great cloud bread
I took my kids for Easter brunch and the two regularly picky eaters loved everything! The food was delicious and the service was top notch. We left satisfied, full, and I was very happy about the bill! Will come back for sure.
Exceptional bang for your buck here on Wednesdays. Such great tasting food, and great service.
Chicon is a nice neighborhood restaurant with a great local food. We all tried fresh brussel sprouts, and the grilled cabbage with our steak and chicken dishes. Really good food!
Great brunch. Thanks!
Loved the decor and food was delicious! Maybe some more entree options would be nice, with better range of prices, but overall great experience.
Had a delicious birthday dinner at Chicon. We went on a Wednesday and took advantage of their prix fixe menu + bottle of wine option. Lovely.
We went for my birthday Tuesday night being big fans of Contigo and were both pleased and disappointed all in one. We arrived at our reserved time of 6:45 pm to a nice table set for our group and proceeded to order snacks and drinks as soon as our server came to greet us. Happy Hour was supposed to go until 7:00, so we made a point to mention that we just wanted to get the HH items in before the cut off then we'd be ordering more after that. The food came and everything was amazing - though orders were mixed up and special requests were forgotten. But things straight off the menu were delicious, especially the charred avocado. So once we reminded our server of the items still missing (that she forgot to put in) all was good. Then after we ordered dinner, the "great wait" happened - it took almost an hour for it to come out. No idea why, but then it did finally arrive and everything straight off the menu was delicious. Unfortunately, those with special diets/requests (sauce on the side, etc) were denied yet again and rather than wait again they just dealt with it. My poor vegetarian mom... too bad. But what we did get was again - amazingly delicious.
Our server was pretty okay at checking with people at the corners of the table, but as the birthday girl in the middle, I tried politely waving (in my awkward "please don't hate me" way) to get her attention but it was very hard to get noticed. I finally did get to order a drink with my dinner but still. They did provide AMAZING desserts on the house for my birthday and that was GREAT. But then the server charged us full price for all those items we originally ordered at happy hour with little concern when we brought it up. She didn't make it right and didn't act like she even cared to try.
So in all, I recommend Chicon BUT check your bill and be wary that you might not get a great server. But your food and the atmosphere will be AMAZING. I'd go again, I'd just ask to be re-sat if I got the same person serving me. :/
The Menu had changed from our previous visit and not for the better. The interior had been remodeled as well, making it look like some kind of hokey Texas Roadhouse. Food was good, but not great. Very loud and not a good spot to go if you actually want to speak to someone. Worst was the service: our server did not come to our table for almost 10 minutes after we sat down. She was nice, but noticeably absent throughout the night. Don't think we'll be going back anytime soon
Brunch is super good we
