About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Fancy
  • Romantic
At Commons Club, right here in the heart of Victoria Street, we believe the best dishes start with the finest ingredients, and there’s nothing quite like what Scotland has to offer. We’re proud to use exceptional local produce, from Loch Dowar smoked salmon to the freshest seasonal catches and quality cuts like our Aberdeen Angus beef - specially selected from John Gilmour Butchers, who work closely with Scottish farmers to supply some of the finest sustainably farmed meat in the country. It’s not just about flavour, but about supporting local producers and doing things the right way, which we take seriously here. Our dedicated team takes pride in making every visit welcoming and memorable, serving up the true taste of Scotland with care and attention. Chef de Cuisine, Emma Hanley, ensures every dish reflects the natural beauty and rich heritage of our country, crafted with skill and genuine respect for quality.

Food was very average, no Lobster available, steak was tough as old boots, whilst oozing blood (ordered medium-well?). Waitress was nice and setting quite nice. Left us a little disappointed overall.

The ambiance was nice, but the service on the evening of December 26, 2025 was just adequate (all courses were delayed). The £35 lobster was not worth the price (size of a prawn). The wait staff were friendly and accommodating when we could get their attention.

FAQs

Partly, the team is welcoming to families (guests have dined with children and celebrated birthdays), but physical accessibility is limited. The dining room is basement level with stairs; one guest noted toilets were down many stairs and that navigating steps could be difficult, though there is a disabled WC upstairs near the bar. If mobility or accessibility is a concern, call ahead so staff can advise and help you find the best seating.

Yes, Commons Club is a popular spot for a romantic evening. Guests frequently praise the cozy, intimate basement dining room, attentive service, excellent cocktails and wine pairings, and a relaxed yet elegant vibe that suits special occasions like anniversaries or Valentine’s dinners. For a smooth experience, book ahead and consider a dinner seating (daily 17:00–21:30). The chef’s-table experience is also a memorable option for a more theatrical, close-up meal.

Likely yes for many holidays, Commons Club lists daily dinner service (17:00–21:30), and guests have reported dining there on Boxing Day (Dec 26). Because holiday hours and service can vary, call ahead to confirm opening hours and to make or change reservations for public holidays.

Portions tend to lean toward a fine-dining portion size, carefully plated and flavourful but on the smaller side. Several guests mentioned small starter portions (single scallop) and felt some dishes were expensive for size, while others praised the quality and presentation. If you want more to share, consider ordering multiple starters, sides, or the tasting/Chef’s Table experience when available.

Smart casual. Guests typically dress neatly for an evening here, polished but comfortable attire fits the restaurant’s casual-elegant style.

Yes, the staff are known to be accommodating. Guests have reported special touches for birthdays, help with practical requests and personalised service. It’s best to call ahead or mention requests when booking (dietary needs, seating preferences, celebration arrangements) so the team can confirm what they can do and prepare.

Commons Club serves dinner daily from 17:00–21:30 and offers lunch/afternoon tea on weekends. Weekend lunch/afternoon tea hours are Sat–Sun 12:00–15:00. For dinner reservations and special experiences like the Chef’s Table, book in advance.

For a quieter experience, early weekday evenings or earlier dinner slots tend to be less busy. Weekends and holidays (e.g., Boxing Day) can be much busier and have longer waits for courses. If you prefer a lively night out, book a weekend dinner; if you want a more relaxed meal, aim for an early weekday dinner or Sunday lunch and reserve in advance.

Warm, stylish and intimate, Commons Club balances cosy basement charm with a contemporary, casual-elegant feel. Guests frequently praise the friendly, attentive staff, well-crafted cocktails and a relaxed dining vibe. A few guests mentioned live music or louder evenings where conversation was harder, so the atmosphere can swing from quiet and romantic to lively depending on the night.

Generally yes, families and children do dine here and guests have celebrated birthdays with kids present. The menu is focused on quality Scottish produce and main courses rather than a children’s menu, so for younger children consider earlier seating and check with the team about menu flexibility. The basement layout and stairs may affect convenience with buggies or mobility needs.

Weekdays (especially early evenings) are often best for a relaxed experience, while Saturday evenings are great if you want a lively atmosphere. Sunday lunch also gets positive mentions for a pleasant, less frenetic meal, and weekend lunch service runs Sat–Sun 12:00–15:00. Reserve in advance for weekends and special dates.
