About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Good for business meals

Crafted cocktails and a marble-clad sunken bar beneath the judge's original oak canopy – The Dixon’s Courtroom bar is a cocktail bar like no other.

This old Magistrates’ Courtroom was where petty criminals received their punishment – just take a look at the mugshots on the walls for proof. The original wood panelling remains, and the judge’s bench has been transformed into a bar. It’s a restoration those faces on the walls would approve of.

As well as cocktails, a wide selection of the world’s most revered spirits all vies for your attention. Like the signature Espresso Martini, made with our very own Shakedown Coffee. Brewed just feet from the original jail cells, Shakedown is our own brand of coffee that is selected and roasted by our team of baristas.

Under a 193 spheres chandelier, indulge yourself with our 1905 Magistrates Afternoon Tea experience alongside pictures of ex-convicts framed on the walls watching over you.

Absolutely amazing afternoon tea experience which was made all the more special by the lovely Lina. What an absolute star. So knowledgeable about the venue and very attentive. The hotel is quirky and beautiful with so much fascinating history but Lina made our day. Thank you Lina!

Would say it was alright - a couple of points : * toilets are quite far - it is a bit of an adventure to find them * when the afternoon tea arrived , the waitress didn’t think about moving stuff before to bring it over so was down to me to make space and she placed it in a way and didn’t have access to the food so had to change the disposition * we were asked to pay the bill in the middle of the degustation because they close the till early on Sunday and then advised the closest door will be closed - it felt to me we were being ousted so we left. The staff was nice but the experience could be enhance with avoiding asking to pay the bill in the middle of the experience - it gave us the ick

They didn’t seem to know about our reservation, and told us we had to leave in one hour. The fries were okay. It was a bit cold in there.

We went for afternoon tea. When we arrived they did not have an afternoon tea booking. The issue seemed to be that they order in the cake etc.. They decided they could accommodate us. The venue was nice but very quiet and quite depressing. Service was very poor. The food was awful. There was plenty but so bad. It had been around for ages in the fridge, definitely very far from fresh. Only thing any good was a small savoury tart. Scones were ok. Sandwiched rick hard and cold/wet. World not go again.

FAQs

Yes. Courtroom Bar at The Dixon is a stylish, intimate spot ideal for date night, think marble-clad sunken bar beneath a dramatic chandelier, craft cocktails (including a house Espresso Martini) and attentive service. The setting is historic and atmospheric (original judge’s bench and framed mugshots), so it’s great for a special evening. Dress smart casual and consider booking early for a quieter table or an evening after a theatre show nearby.

Portions lean toward bar‑style and sharing plates rather than large mains. The menu highlights bar snacks and small plates, charcuterie & cheese combos, a trio of sliders, arancini and prawn dim sum, many of which are listed with calories. Expect snack-sized dishes meant to pair with cocktails or to share rather than full multi-course restaurant portions.

It depends on what you want: for the signature 1905 Magistrates Afternoon Tea, book an afternoon slot (the Festive Afternoon Tea menu is offered). For a post‑theatre supper or lively evening, visit after nearby matinees or on weekend evenings, guests have recommended it after theatre. For a quieter vibe, aim for weekday early evenings (Mon–Thu) when the bar opens from 15:00.

Warm, theatrical and historic, the bar lives inside a restored magistrates’ courtroom with original wood panelling, framed mugshots and a dramatic chandelier. The setting is quirky yet elegant (Casual Elegant), with attentive service noted by guests. It’s atmospheric for cocktails, afternoon tea or a post‑theatre stop.

Smart casual. The venue’s Casual Elegant style and atmospheric setting make smart casual attire appropriate, ideal for cocktails, afternoon tea or an evening after the theatre.

Busiest: evenings and weekend periods, the bar is open from midday on Fri/Sat and guests specifically recommend it for post‑theatre suppers after matinees. Quietest: weekday mid‑afternoons and early evenings (Mon–Thu after opening at 15:00) tend to feel calmer. If you prefer a lower-key visit, aim for weekday slots rather than weekend nights.

For a lively, post‑theatre evening aim for Fri or Sat when the bar opens from noon and the atmosphere is more bustling. For a quieter, more relaxed visit or afternoon tea experience choose a weekday (Mon–Thu) when the venue opens at 15:00. Both options suit different moods: weekends for buzz, weekdays for a calmer experience.
