Steakhouse
El Che Steakhouse & Bar, Chicago's Argentine-influenced resto-bar, is Executive Chef/Partner John Manion’s homage to the steak-heavy traditions of Argentina's Asador. Located just beyond the West Loop’s famed “restaurant row”, El Che opened in 2016 and has quickly built a reputation as Chicago's go-to destination for beef, wine, and live-fire cooking. A 12 ft. custom-built grill ignites a range of South American-tinged meats, seasonal vegetables, seafood and novel barrio-inflected bites to perfection. Chef Manion’s passion for Latin flavors imbues the spirited dishes and dramatic setting of the swanky 100-seat restaurant. Guests can feel the intensity of the open flame when dining at the chef’s counter for a 10-course meal. El Che has earned a coveted three-star rating from the Chicago Tribune and was named in the “Top 50 Chicago Restaurants” by Chicago Tribune’s dining critic, Phil Vettel in February 2017.

Been to El Che before and had a great meal. This time was just so so and the service was subpar. Found a rubber band in our broccolini that I almost consumed. Barely received an apology. The server never acknowledged it. The person who brought out the new dish made a joke about it. No check back was done when the new dish hit the table. To top it all off we were still charged for it. Based on tonight’s experience I would probably not go back.

Got the ribeye and it ordered medium rare which the server recommended. Normally we are fine with it but it was so rare neither my boyfriend or I could eat it. Also there was not a ton of flavor. Disappointed. Small serving but yummy potatoes though. Sad they were out of the garlic frites.

Our service was poor. My husband and I started by ordering off the restaurant week menu. He ordered the same meal and she assumed we were sharing. My husband ordered his ribeye Medium Plus and it came out dry and extremely well done. When we we asked her, she said that is how they cook medium plus and was argumentative. She brought out another steak that was closer to medium rare and we just sent it back. They sent out gelato when I complained to the manager.

The server took more than 20 min to bring our drinks. When she came our wine pours were the equivalent to a tasting (I’m a certified sommelier). The food was mediocre. I don’t recommend the oysters! We’ve been here before and it was better so I don’t know what happened this time but we won’t be back.

We went for restaurant week and had an opportunity to try some of their dishes. Everything was delicious! The carrots were my favorite menu item. Service was great. Drinks were good. We were seated at their community table and it was great because we were able to see the how the food was being prepped. The table is definitely roomier than the other tables so a big bonus for us. Would definitely recommend and we can’t wait to go back.

Great ambiance! Nice wine and bar selection. I was disappointed with the food. Non authentic. Disappointed with Steak. Bland/Dry.....not reflective of the Argentinian cuisine.

Empanadas, steak tartare, and El Che steak were amazing! BUT the arugula salad with a creole vinaigrette was the STAR of the night. I’m still thinking about it being the best salad I’ve ever had! 1/2 off bottles of wine on Monday so I’d say overall we will be back again!

The food is as good as it gets. The wine list is comprehensive for the ethnicity it represents. Try the grilled oysters and the steak tartare. It's our third visit and we will definitely be going back

Went for restaurant week. The quality of the food was subpar. The ribeye tasted like they got the meat from Jewel. The old fashioned was really good. Overall we were not impressed. You can throw a dart at a restaurant board and find a better option for the money.

Dishes tasted good but none of the food was hot. Empanadas were the best part. The meal was certainly not worth the price we paid for the meal. Server was attentive, friendly, and helpful.

Great restaurant and ambiance.
Staff was really attentive and on top of their game.
The only setback was the kitchen making the steak way too salty and the salmon was undercooked. However, they quickly fired up a new one for us.

Overall, good place.

What can I say? the food here was amazing!! We started off with the Grilled Delaware Oysters and Beef Empanads. Bother were delicious. For our main course we decided on the Gnocchi and Quail. The Quail was hands down my favorite dish of the night. To top it off, we went the the Apple Pie Empanada. Was amazing!
Great spot for date night with the gf, the open flame grill, music, and overall ambiance of the restaurateur was perfect. This restaurateur is a must for anyone looking for great food in the West Loop area.

2nd time at this place. Honestly, the 1st time was a few weeks ago which I felt was average and I accidentally made another reservation for last night. The overall experience was much improved and ordering small plates was definitely the way to go rather than a large plate for dinner. Will definitely keep this on my list.

Not a big fan of the pimiento cheese app. A little hard to parcel out bites. Also steak was a bit under. Fan of medium rare but there was still some non rendered fat that made the NY strip hard to eat. Still a fan and will be back.

El Che Bar was perfect for my husbands 30th Birthday. We did the Chef’s counter and I highly recommend it! Chef was friendly and made you feel right at home. The hospitality, food, wine, and atmosphere was perfection. The 10 courses are unique to the day and based on what you like. Everything was delicious and I look forward to visiting again!

This was the best meal we had in Chicago. The wine was excellent, the food was seasonal and beautiful, the service was attentive. My one recommendation: get bigger water glasses! The guy must have come to the table about 12 times over the course of the meal because each time we sipped from our thimbles, they needed to be refilled. Obviously...very minor complaint for an otherwise perfect experience.

Came to El Che Bar for NYE dinner. Servers and management were fine; not overly warm, but pleasant enough. We enjoyed the cocktails but found most of the food to be lackluster, expensive (read as overpriced for what it was) and disappointing. We were very excited to try this spot, but probably won’t be returning.

Short ribs were almost entirely fat/grizzle hidden with chimichurri...I sent mine back which is a very rare occurrence for me and something I’ve only done a handful of times in my life. My boyfriend had a few bites before giving up and pushing his plate away. We both love short ribs but neither of us enjoyed these and couldn’t even really eat them. Management took mine off the bill which we appreciated but they were unapologetic and kind of rude about it and made a comment “so you just don’t like them?” when I tried to explain that they were nearly entirely fat and grizzle and that I couldn’t eat them.

We enjoyed the cocktails, but were over charged for my boyfriend’s old fashions. He ordered his with Makers, so we expected some up charge, but we were charged for the pricer Makers Mark 46 even though the he didn’t order it—we checked online after dinner and saw they they have regular Makers. Server didn’t say anything about serving or charging us for the 46. When he ordered his drink our server wasn’t even sure if they had Makers so we are giving her the benefit of the doubt that maybe she just didn’t know what she was doing or what the difference was. At this point we didn’t want to deal with it anymore so we didn’t say anything and just paid and left since they took my short ribs off the bill.

The experience wasn’t all bad. If you end up going, go for the ambiance, cocktails, and for the dulce de leche gelato. This might be a fun pre-dinner spot or nightcap spot.
