Fishing With Dynamite
What Insiders Are Saying
We don't use the term "destination restaurant" lightly. But the seafood at Manhattan Beach's Fishing With Dynamite more than fits the bill.
We love the restaurant !! It was delicious. The Peruvian scallops, oysters are amazing. We also enjoyed the grilled octopus.
The biggest surprise was the rolls. Good thing the kids were not with us, we would have gone broke over bread. 😀
We had a good time with cousins and they live in LA and will go back again
We will be back next year.
I had wanted to eat at Fishing With Dynamite for a long time but was never able to get in without a reservation. Finally thought ahead and made one. My friend and I loved our meals. I had the shrimp po boy and she had the spicy ahi tuna. Her dish was truly exceptional. I loved the shrimp on my sandwich but couldn't fit the bun into my mouth. Would definitely come back another time. I'd like to try to raw bar menu.
This was my 3rd time in the past year and my biggest single regret was that it was only my 3rd time this past year. A must stop for any foodie.
Fantastic ambience and food. Highly recommended, even if you skip the raw bar
One of my favorite special occasion lunch spots. Always delicious!
salad and tuna toast were both disappointing — with the salad overwhelmingly spicy from the combination of the greens plus chilis, and bacon overdose dominated the toast. the hamachi was good, though.
best restaurant in the world. i always have the best and most delicious time. i love FWD the most.
It was great! Only comment would be that the music was too loud.
This is a great place but petit, so you want to make reservations. The food is awesome.
Only negative, music way too loud, don’t understand why restaurants think that is a good thing.... outstanding food and service.
Music horrendous in volume and choice. Salad of seaweed with hardly any fruit. Food way too spicy. Waiter nice and went out to find my beer of choice.
FWD is a long time fav of mine. My friend Tina is a very picky foodie and she declared the Mahi Tacos the best fish tacos she’s ever had. The steelhead trout dish was exquisite. Be aware, the portions are small. Order the acorn squash rolls for dessert
Love everything about this place. Every bite was delicious. Wish I could eat there daily.
Food and service were great. The main problem was the level of the music. Almost to the level of a night club for my business lunch. :( I asked twice to lower the music but it never was lowered to an acceptable level. I won't be taking clients here until they address the music level; and I enjoy music.
Always great. This time in particular, the oysters were out of this world.
Food was awesome. A bit noisy.
We had retired friends from the airline industry who at the last minute, flew in from Dallas to LAX to meet us for lunch, and then flew back. And we needed an interesting place for a cool Sunday afternoon lunch. Fishing With Dynamite was a great place for our rendezvous - close to the airport but just a block up from the beach.
We shared a plate of oysters as an appetizer, then had wonderful crab cakes with eggs, fish and chips and a seafood salad. Everything was very tasty and our friends loved it! All the dishes that we saw come out of the kitchen and from the bar area looked wonderful - I'd try the selection of seafood next time. Although we did not drink, the bar menu looked inventive.
The restaurant is quite small and there are only two tables that can be reserved so take your chances by just showing up or do what we did and reserve using OpenTable! The only downside is that the noise level was pretty high, the music was vibrant but could have been lowered (heck it was only 1 PM on a Sunday, after all). We will visit again.
Great service and fresh seafood. The manager Lilly was so kind she offered us dessert.
This is my 2nd time here, it's not easy to book a rezzy in advance. It's a very cute small restaurant (formerly Talia's which I loved) and I'd been wanting to come back. I love the vibe inside and the oysters were good. However, there really wasn't much on the menu that sounded good to me. I love fish but either there was chicken or bacon added to a couple of the dishes that sounded good, and the salmon tartare I ordered was very blah. Also, it was annoying when we came in because the bartender was blocking us from sitting because he was chatting with an actor. not kidding we stood there for a good minute or two and I finally had to tap him to let us in because like I said, the place was small. Our server was very friendly but she would literally pop up right by my husband's head and scare the crap out of him by asking in his ear. it was comical. I could overlook all of that if the food was up to par but to us both it was very blah. Also ordered the crab CAKE (singular) and it just wasn't that great. sadly, we left disappointed and probably won't returning. But I loved the oysters and the ambience.
Osyters: some were excellent; several of the 12 were washed out, not much taste. This hadn't been true in earlier visits. Clam chowder very good as always. Crab good--good and crabby although the sauce seems to spicy now.
The noise level, even when half full, is way too high. Music too loud. I guess the younger folks like it that way.
Food is excellent and fish is high quality
Maura was fantastic as always! And the new additions to the menu were great - loved the hamachi collar and the Peruvian scallops are always great!
So sat at the counter and ordered the Queen Mary chilled seafood platter which is everything and the kitchen sink. Great little dive bar that serves the raw stuff beautifully. 70’s music blaring, very tight spacing and seating like in a submarine but maybe that’s the whole point of FwD!!!!! Service is awesome because there’s like a 2:1 ratio of customers to employees. But you have to like raw as in not cooked....
LOVE the food. super loud but great service. will come back again and again :)
Always has the freshest seafood. Their service is amazing and they have the best key lime pie.
Fresh and Delicious Seafood! Lovely And Friendly Staff.
Hamachi dish was awesome! The grilled octopus was also great!
Really great - the view was fabulous, great service, but the tables are a taaaaaad close together and the music is very loud to drown out the other conversations - and I wonder if it doesn’t simply cause more issues because you really have to speak loudly to converse yourself. Other than that, the view, the decor and the food are wonderful!
By far the best seafood restaurant to eat at in Manhattan Beach!
I've been there several times but the last time I was there I thought the music was too loud and the service was indifferent. The food is good but the portions are small for the price. The tables are too crowded in for my taste. I think I'll try someplace else next time.
very special food you cannot find anywhere else, one word..wow!...but most important are the staff....professional, friendly and the epitome of what we look for in a wonderful restaurant experience
Best seafood I’ve ever had in my life. Again and again the chef fails to disappoint!
Food was amazing! Service was impeccable! From the host, to the servers, as well as the management, clearly amazing! One of the best experiences ever! Thank you to all!
From the warm welcome to the spectacular food, FWD made our date night one to remember. The Peruvian scallops and grilled octopus we simply amazing. Thank you Caroline for taking time to chat with us and to our amazing server whose recommendations were spot on. Loved loved loved FWD!!
It was our 10 year anniversary. Couple next to us was great. Try the pretzel bread dessert! It will not disappoint. Very small place! Glad we made a reservation!!
Even when it is pouring with rain outside, FWD puts a small on your face. A dozen, super fresh, assorted oysters, a glass of citrusy, dry Picpoul followed by a huge plate of Fish and Chips - the perfect combination to chase away the rainy day blues.
Such great hospitality!
Try the yellow tail! (And the shellfish tower!)
