I had heard a lot of great things about this restaurant, but overall I was disappointed. The food was eh, just OK at best. You can find much better at many Philly restaurants for the same price or less. The wait staff was rude and unaccommodating. It was also extremely loud and I could not hear my partner sitting across from me the whole meal. I would not recommend this restaurant nor would I go back.
This place lived up to all the accolades it’s received. Cocktails and food were all amazing. The portions were generous too. Steak tartare and mussel toast were outstanding. The potato gnocchi were the best I’ve ever had. They were slightly crispy on outside and soft and pillowy on the inside! Staff was extremely pleasant and helpful too throughout the meal. I plan to repeat this restaurant again which I don’t typically do.
Absolutely one of the best restaurants in Philadelphia.
It was our anniversary dinner... the food was delicious! We really enjoyed the meal, wait staff & ambiance.
This is the real deal. A few minor pretentious notes, like the charcoal dust on the crispy wafers offered as a greeting, but everything we had was excellent. Sublime gnocchi, wonderfully rich seafood pasta, the chicken of course, and the little sweetbread sandwiches are the stuff of dreams.
Amazing food and drinks!!
Everything was excellent but the Brussels sprouts and Duck were outstanding
Great service and amazing food. One of the best dining experiences in Philadelphia. There is a reason this great restaurant is ranked in the top 5 of the top 50 restaurants in Philadelphia. Will definitely come back
Exceptional service, food, and cocktails.
Absolutely flawless experience, food was outstanding, great service, and they even had one of my favorite rosés on their bottle list. Would absolutely return the next time I’m in Philly. Thanks for a wonderful evening!
Amazing food, service, and cocktails. It was a perfect date night!
Lots of rules and multiple reconfirmations
Main entree options very limited (duck was sold out) especially since no specials. Chicken & steak very well prepared and portions generous. Octopus also good.
I booked on Open Table where I've noted my "spouse requires no-sugar options". Most restaurants take note and raise the issue without our prompting prepared to advise re sugar-free options but here the waiter had not been told (we made the reservation weeks ahead). No biggie but not isolated. My appetizer arrived 20 minutes after my husband got his.
The high decibel noise on 2nd floor + tables very close together and constant bustle make this another packed, trendy, noisy spot. Not special.
One of my best meals and experiences ever. These guys do an amazing job. 15/10
Amazing food and wonderful service. Will absolutely be back!
The smoked herring spaghetti was delicious. Everything else we ordered was good as well, but not memorable enough that I would recommend people to go here. Based on all the reviews and accolades, I expected to be blown away, but I wasn't unfortunately.
We went to FSS for an anniversary dinner. The atmosphere was dark and romantic. The service was knowledgeable and attentive. The food was very good but no one dish delivered a wow. The wine list was very small but balanced. Overall it was a nice experience. We enjoyed the salad, Brussels, and spaghetti. The shellfish plateau was mostly mussel toast, which is very creamy. The cantaloupe sorbet to end the meal was superb.
I went here for a very important business dinner. We ordered one main dish per person and for some reason the server thought we would share the dishes and brought two dishes first and said the other two dishes will come after we finish the first two. We explained to the server that we are not sharing and we will eat our individual dish. He then took two dishes (pasta) back to the kitchen. When all the four dishes came out after 10mins, the two pasta dishes were exactly the same ones that came out before. Very disappointed and ruined our dinner.
I surprised my husband for his birthday and let me say he has now added this restaurant as one of his top five favorites for Philly dining. He cannot stop raving about the mussel toast we had. The drinks were exquisite and right on par with our menu. The Chilean sea bass was substituted for the halibut for our dinner and I am glad we chose it. We thought is was actually better than the lobster dish we ordered. Food was served for the purposes of sharing but with just the right portions to be full but not overwhelmed. Our server Thor, was attentive and answered all of our questions about the menu. Another plus was the ambiance. We could actually hear each other talk! The quaintness of the upstairs dining area made the difference along with separating it from the bar scene downstairs. NICE TOUCH. The only qualm I had was the lack of a decent dessert menu. I love sweets and always top off my dinner with a decadent dessert, the selection was just average. After the wonderful meal I had, I was expecting my dessert to "wow" me. It didn't. We will definitely be back for more mussel toast. This restaurant is a gem. Thank you.
Great place that offers an intimate environment to enjoy your delicious meal. My wife and I enjoyed every plate and drink. Highly recommend!
Impeccable service, delicious food. Perfect date night experience! Fresh oysters, steak tartare, sweet potato agnolotti, confit carrots, and roasted chicken were perfection!
Delicious food. Surly waiter.
FSS is a wonderful place to have a quiet, intimate dinner for a special occasion. The general ambience of the restaurant (we did not spend time at the bar) is one of quality and class. The staff was warm in their greetings, helpful in their suggestions, and attentive to our needs -- but never overbearing. Although the portion sizes were relatively small, the taste of all the food we ate was excellent. Do save room for dessert!
FSS does not have room for large crowds, and a noisy one would almost certainly be out of place here. I would not recommend it for a party crowd. But if (like us) you want a place to enjoy each other in a small, intimate way; FSS is a great place.
Parking will be VERY difficult to find in this neighborhood, so will either (1) pay for a ride, (2) walk several blocks, or (3) pay high fees to park and then walk a few blocks. If you have a timed reservation (highly recommended!), do not drive here with the idea of parking at the front door!!
The background music was a bit disconcerting -- classic top 40, rap, or R&B. Because it was vocal music, relatively loud, it was hard to tune out. Soft jazz, a bit lower in volume, would have been far more appropriate.
Exquisite. The food, the service, the decor— everything was impeccable!!
Might very well be the best restaurant in Philly at the moment.
Our group of friends were so impressed with each dish ordered. It is obvious that the dynamic owners work together towards excellence each day. Chad Moore Williams and Hannah attend to each diner to ensure high quality and satisfaction. The bartender, Paul, has much knowledge and creative skills and designs drinks that go beyond your expectations.
Each dish has an balance of exquisite flavors. The caviar eggs were a very pleasant surprise. The carrots besides being delicious are fortifying.
This was my third enjoyable visit to Th, Fr, Saturday and look forward to another visit soon.
Wonderful meal! From the cocktails at the bar to the beautiful upstairs dining room. Seafood tower is stunning and great value! Fish is excellent
Food was very good, however, one pasta dish was on the cold side, when mentioned it to our server, he just shrug his shoulders, almost in disbelief. But that being said, he had no warmth about him at all. Very cut and dry, business like. It was ashame, because he actually had a nice smile. But, he offered nothing in terms of hospitality, he was not welcoming, just very cold! I expect more from a restaurant of this caliber!
Really love this restaurant and have been before. Lucky to snag a res for Sat night last minute cancellation perhaps. Didn't enjoy quite as much this time. Really limited entree choices and we wanted the duck. It was sold out before seven pm. ordered caviar and egg starter. For about sixteen dollars rxpected more than a tsp of flavorful foam. oysters very good but smallish. Lobster yummy but again not much of it. Dining partner had strip steak because nothing else appealed. I noticed others sitting nearby who only ordered one or two smaller items to perhaps keep the price down. We feel guiltytaking a Dat night table and doing that but it is pretty pricey for date night. Dont go hungry. Very nice wines by the glass and other drinks but also on expensive side. I realize that turning out creative dishes at this level is costly for the restaurant owners. Service as always outstanding.
I’ve eaten at many fine restaurants from NJ to Europe. This place is overpriced and overrated. The portions were so tiny it’s ridiculous. Don’t waste you’re time or money.
all around well done, nice presentation. Casual waitstaff, could recommend for date or sharing
Amazing food! The control state is the best drink on the menu!
Truly one of the best meals we’ve had in Philly in the last 2-3 years. A fun combination of sophisticated cuisine and down to earth ingredients such as sweetbreads, carrots, labneh. Not too pretentious, not too simplistic. Just right. We will be back soon
Not five stars for the following two reasons::
Cocktails were hit or miss. We tried four. Two were delicious and complex and two were just “meh”. Not quite as good as The Franklin.
Service was well paced and professional but also very stiff and aloof. You felt a little bit like just another cover. Waiter never introduced himself though did have good suggestions. Hostess never said hello on way in and just stared at her phone on the way out without as much as a “bye”.
Excellent service. The food is solid but it doesn't wow. Extremely small portions, but that's their thing; order 5ish plates @ $15-18 each for a good meal. Still, I'm an average size guy (160lbs) and after a $200 tab I stopped for a slice on the way home. The fact that portion size and value were a part of our conversation and the conversation of those tables on either side of us (not being nosey, you get to sit pretty close to your neighbors). Overall a nice experience given the service and atmosphere but there are many better options in Philly in terms of both overall food quality and value for money.
Tim, our server was great, food was fantastic and our table by the window was very nice. Close to Vernick in overall experience...hard to find, but well worth the effort!
Fabulous food, fresh, innovative. Attentive non stuffy service. Intimate pretty small restaurant.
Wonderful to return to a restaurant and location that has been there for so many years but has now been refreshed and reinvigorated. The setting is stylish. The staff are very efficient, friendly, well informed, proactive, etc. The food was DELICIOUS. Perhaps a little on the high end for cost, which may keep it from being a neighborhood regular, but we will definitely go again.
Excellent food and service
Beautiful setting for a fine meal
The restaurant was lovely, although it was difficult to find a parking space. We were not, however, impressed with the staff. We called to say we would be a little late and asked that they hold our table for 10 minutes. The woman replied "we will hold it as long as possible." When I asked what she meant, she just kept repeating herself. While I looked for a parking space, I dropped off my 2 dining companions, who were not treated well while I was driving around. When I finally arrived, our waiter was less than friendly. He was abrupt and seemed annoyed. We ordered an appetizer called mussel toast, nothing on the menu stated that it contained scallops, to which one of the people with us is deathly allergic. I happened to catch this when the person who brought it to the table mentioned scallops. When I told our waiter, he again seemed annoyed. Also, the table next to us was very close and the waiter constantly had his backside up against us. Things turned around when we recieved our food. It was nicely presented and delicious. Thankfully, this saved the dining experience and we were able to laugh at our rude waiter. In fact, it saved his tip. One suggestion I would make is never assume that any of your patrons are beneath you.
We were very disappointed after reading such great reviews. It was just okay and not a restaurant I’d return to. Our server was rather grumpy- he never smiled- and made us feel like we were bothering him by being there. As for the music, it was all over the place from song to song and felt very random and not appropriate for the restaurant. The food was okay. The oysters to start were good. We then had the confit carrots which were nothing special. There wasn’t a lot of flavour, the yogurt sauce wasn’t great and some carrots were overdone and mushy. We then ordered the duck for two, which was highly recommended and apparently sells out every night. The duck was cooked well but the plantains and small and uninspired endive “salad” as accompaniments didn’t fit the dish and seemed like an inexpensive and rushed afterthought. There are many interesting restaurants in Philly with better food and value and we wouldn’t return.
