This is a treasure! I Live in Northbrook and have become stuck in my go-to places. We tried House 406 Friday 11-9 and LOVED it!! Service was attentive, knowledgable but not pushy. All our food was great, especially the mussels. So happy to have a wonderful restaurant in Northbrook that you can actually hear each other talk!
I will be back.
We enjoyed our meal and would consider returning. House 406 is quiet, well-lit and nicely furnished, with easy access and parking. The menu has a good variety and we thought the food was well prepared. My crab cakes were very tasty, with little filler. Among the best I've had in the north shore area. We had a flat bread appetizer which we didn't care for, but that is more a matter of personal taste, there was nothing wrong with the prep. Service was always there but discrete, neither absent nor hovering. It made for a nice quiet dinner and a welcome change from the dimly lit noisy eateries which seem to be so common.
So happy I found this place, and will definitely be back when I return to Chicago. Had a whitefish special that was as spectacularly good as any fresh fish I've had in Maui. Beautiful restaurant, and very attentive and helpful service. Our server was especially cognizant of my 89-year-old mom's special needs, which I greatly appreciated. We dined early (5:15) and it was quiet until the restaurant started filling up, at which point the noise level was crazy. Every table was filled - the north shore clearly knows about House 406! I look forward to dining there again.
Fit for a foodie, yet nice alternatives for picky eaters. Really wonderful flavors and presentation. Room was a bit loud, but it was a Saturday night. Wait staff super nice and friendly, but not perfectly attentive. Very nice gesture of free dessert as we had to wait 15 min past our reservation time to be seated due to a leave slow table. All in all this place is on top of their game and very much worth seeking out.
We had lovely lunch. Our service was excellent. The food was very good. $65 (incl tip) is bit pricey for lunch with only one beverage ( no alcohol and no dessert,) but it was very good. There was a bowl of soup too. Also tasty.
I waited a few minutes to be seated when I arrived, because there was no one at the front desk. There were a couple servers at the bar who acted like I wasn't even standing there. Service thereafter was okay, nothing outstanding. The food portion was like what you'd serve to a kid--so small. I got an appetizer and entree, AND still needed a snack when I got home. Not going back there!
Great menu options, nice vibe, friendly stuff; must try!!!
As a neighborhood restaurant, House 406is a good place to go. Our experience on a Saturday night was overshadowed by the noise which was unacceptable. Too bad so I would recommend a Week night instead.
We've never been disappointed by House 406. Wonderful cocktails, perfectly prepared meals in an "energetic" setting! Noisy but delicious!
Lobster appetizer was splendid meals all were very tasty. I will be back so I can have desert!
This is one of our favorite restaurants and we are never disappointed. The food and service are always excellent.
It's a keeper! The food was very good and service was amazing!!
Excellent service. Excellent menu choices. Food exceeded expectations. Reasonable prices for an upscale restaurants
Great food, awesome service and carrot cake dessert was to die for!
The food was delicious. Just as important, the service was friendly and attentive. What a great way to celebrate a birthday and anniversary! Thank you.
Great ambiance. Great service. Lobster appetizer and the Brussels sprouts were very good. Scallops with risotto was not good, undercooked and odd taste. Great patio also.
Great neighborhood gem, highly recommended, everyday dinning and/or special occasion!
If I could give this place ten stars, I would. Truly a wonderful neighborhood restaurant serving real gourmet meals.
Started with lobster crostini that are delicious morsels of lobster on toast.
Then we had two salads which were good.
For dinner the four of us had the scallops, white fish, crab cakes and snapper. Every dish was prepared beautifully.
For desert we had the peach cobbler and carrot cake.
You will often hear some complaints about price, however, I think that for a dinner that’s soup to nuts, including multiple drinks, $90 a person (tax and tip included) is a bargain. You simply cannot dine out at a nice restaurant on the North Shore for much less, and you will not enjoy the same quality and service.
Speaking of which, high kudos to Sean who is the best server in the world.
This made for a wonderful, memorable evening with friends.
My partner and I ordered the same fish but unfortunately mine wasn’t fresh.
Went Friday Night and sat outside and had a delicious dinner. The Lobster Crostini appetizer is my favorite!
Food was tasty, service was good ,a bit pricey for what we ate.
disappointed - food not special as it had been on our first visit in july
very fatty lambchop and orzo side was unimpressive, quality of beef filet not in line with price
wanted so much for it all to be good
waiter was rushed
Wonderful menu!! Atmosphere and service wonderful!!
The food was outstanding - all of us loved the flavors. The chef was creative and the presentations were appealing. We'd return in a second!
Definitely rushed us thru our meal on a Friday night.
The waiter got several things incorrect with our order. One item did not arrive (because he forgot) until we were almost finished dinner.
Very good food and service. A gem in the burbs.
It’s our second time and it’s becomming one our favorites go to for special occasions.
My only disappointment was the peach cobbler had to much nutmeg.
The food was delicious. The service was par at best. Our food did not come out together. They switched two peoples meals. One was still not even on the table 5 mins after most of us received our meals. For the price that we paid for the meal the service should have been much better. Very disappointed
The food was fabulous. The bourbon flight outstanding. Service impeccable. People engaging and friendly. A keeper for sure.
outstanding menu, service was excellent, gluten free menu options, scotch list was varied/clear ice cubes, portions were very good
We always enjoy this restaurant, and this time was no exception. The food is always wonderful, and the service is helpful, accommodating and unobtrusive. However, at all of our previous visits, we recall it being conversation-friendly, even when busy. This time, the restaurant was fairly empty, but the noise level was higher than we remembered and the music vibe was definitely more contemporary, upbeat and loud. Maybe it’s always been that way, and we never noticed until last night because the restaurant wasn’t full.
The Monday night half-price wine bottle promotion is great!
Great bartenders make craft cocktails. Food is good but menu has stayed the same for awhile would love to see some new things
Attentive but not overbearing server--
He made good recommendations!
Delicious dinner, but the peach cobbler was just ok ..too much peach and not enough cobbler!
I visited the restaurant on Aug 25th for my fiancee's birthday.. We were greeted with 2 glasses of prosecco.. Our waiter was very nice and accommodating.. As far as the food, the bread wasn't very good.. It was soft on inside, but in my opinion it was overcooked on outside. I understand the outside should have a good crust and should be a little crispy, but it was as overcooked.. I had the scallop dish with Wild mushroom risotto and arugula salad. The Salmon was a little over cooked, bland with no seasoning.. I felt the risotto needed a little more flavor, perhaps more stock or Heavy Cream.. My fiancee had the Pork chop ribeye with wild rice with Maple glaze demi.. The maple demi dominated the dish.. I think the porkchop is to thick to not to be in a marinade.. The intial seasoning on the outside of the pork chop was cool though.. The only thing she complained about is that she thought the pork chop would be more tender.. I am a Chef at the Greater Columbus Convention Center in Columbus, Ohio.. I have worked at Sheratons and Doubletrees in the Downtown Columbus area.. I understand the restaurant business.. These are things that can be fixed in my opinion.. The crazy thing is, the service was outstanding and the waiter made my fiancee feel special.. Please dont take these comments negatively.. Just on your service alone I would come back. We all make mistakes and learn new things everyday. Its just on us not to make those mistakes again.. Thank you so much for making my fiancee feel special.
I’ve been to to House 406 a couple of times. Always had a pleasant experience with good food. The last visit was for a lunch date with a friend. The hostess was nice enough but the server was terrible. The first acknowledgment from him was to take our order. No water, no specials, no questions. At the end of the meal I asked for a cup of coffee at which he replied he had to make a pot. No big deal since this happens often. Why a restaurant wouldn’t have coffee a fresh pot ready during the lunch rush is beyond me but OK. That wasn’t the problem though, the issue was that he never came back to ask if I’d like more coffee or if we wanted anything else. He simply brought the check and set it down. It’s shocking that in this competitive dining area, service would be this poor and at such a well regarded restaurant. Definitely will go to one of the other nearby eateries next time.
I read all the reviews of House 406 and decided that we would take a crack at getting a last minute reservation and request patio/outdoor seating. We were able to get a 7:30 reservation (we requested 7), which was not a big deal at all. When we arrived they told us that our outdoor table would be ready in 10 minutes (or we could be seated inside immediately) and that we were welcome to have a drink at the bar, which we did, deciding we wanted to sit outside on a beautiful summer evening. We ordered drinks at the bar, giving Justin the bartender "parameters" of what we wanted (one vodka cocktail....summertime treat....and one bourbon cocktail.....smokey flavored but not too "out-there." Justin created two amazing cocktails and then explained what he put together for us. They were really delicious and it was fun to have an original drink mixed up right before our eyes. Then we took our table outside and had Scott Levy as a waiter. We knew him from Highland Park's Merlos (closed) and loved that guy. As usual, he took exceptional care of us, explaining everything on the menu and making recommendations when asked. He visited us periodically to make sure we were OK. Not so often that it was disruptive and not too infrequently to leave us wondering where he had gone. Just the right attention from an outstanding waiter. We have found our new favorite restaurant on the north shore and recommend it without hesitation. Yes, it is in a strip mall, but you would never know if once you are there. Try House 406....you will not regret it.
Very cozy, warm environment. Very romantic. Very good food. A little more expensive than I expected but the experience makes it worth the cost.
My wife and I went to House 406 for our wedding anniversary. It was our first visit to the restaurant and we were hoping it would be special. It was!! We got a quiet, corner table and were immediately served two glasses of sparkling wine for the occasion. We got the filet mignon & lobster along with seared scallops and split everything. It was all fantastic. Steak was seasoned beautifully and very tender. Lobster tail was buttery and sweet. The scallops were tender and sweet. We finished it off with French pressed coffee and cinnamon roll bread pudding. It was all great including the service. We will come back for sure.
We needed to be local for our anniversary dinner, and we couldn't have been more pleased. The food and drinks are comparable to what you find in Chicago or in more stylish suburban locations, but at a much more reasonable price. The service was attentive and personal. We were fortunate to have perfect weather for our outdoor table. Granted, the setting is just a suburban strip mall.
