I will never understand why this (and other restaurants) must play loud, thumping music in addition to the loud din of conversations of diners on a busy Saturday night! Turn the music down and maybe people could hear themselves talk and not have to be so loud.

Prime 79 is one of my favourite restaurants. The ambience, very professional staff and excellent food is why we make the 2.5 hour drive.

I was disappointed with the quality of the food and the portions were a bit small for the price point. Service was great and the place was really nice.

FAQs

Yes, Prime 79 is a popular date-night spot. Guests consistently praise the elegant, historic dining room (an old Edwardian bank), mood lighting, well-crafted cocktails and attentive service, which makes it ideal for anniversaries or a special evening out. Expect a lively, sometimes noisy atmosphere on weekend nights; for a quieter table request a corner or an early reservation. Consider the patio in warm months or the intimate Vault Room for special celebrations.

Portions are generally generous for mains but can vary by dish. Many guests report hearty entrées like full racks of ribs, lamb shank and steak frites; some past guests found certain pastas or penne alla vodka smaller than expected. The prix-fixe and daily specials are described as good value. If you’re unsure, starters and sharable plates (calamari, truffle fries, octopus) are popular to build a full meal.

Prime 79 posts regular hours: Mon, Wed, Thu, Sun 12:00 pm–9:00 pm; Fri–Sat 12:00 pm–10:00 pm. The bar stays open later on Fri–Sat (until 11:00 pm). Guests also mention weekend brunch service and holiday evening service, but hours can vary for special events, so call or check the website before visiting.

For a quieter experience, choose weekday lunch or an early midweek dinner. Guests report the restaurant gets busiest on Friday/Saturday nights, theatre nights and holiday evenings. If you want a lively night with cocktails and atmosphere, book a weekend; for deals and a calmer vibe try Monday (half-price bottles) or earlier seatings midweek.

Prime 79 offers a mix of seating: a bar area, high-top tables, indoor dining in the restored Edwardian space, a back patio for warm weather and a Vault Room that guests have used for private parties. Guests also describe upstairs kitchen views and cozy corners; if you need a specific table or private room, request it when booking.

Warm, lively and stylish, Prime 79 blends a chic, historic setting with energetic service. Guests love the glow of chandeliers, the restored bank building feel, and the inviting bar. Expect a bustling vibe on weekend nights (sometimes noisy), friendly servers, and a mix of date nights, family dinners and celebrations. For quieter conversation ask for a corner table or an early seating.

Casual dress is the stated dress code. Guests often dress smart-casual for date nights and celebrations; many come in nice evening wear for anniversaries, while others visit in relaxed attire, especially at lunch or on the patio. If you're celebrating something special, business-casual or smart-casual is a safe choice.

Yes, guests frequently request specific tables, celebration notes and seating preferences. Reviews show the team often helps with birthday/anniversary touches and private-room set-ups (Vault Room). Because a few guests reported missed OpenTable notes, it’s best to call the restaurant directly after booking to confirm table location, dietary needs or celebration requests.

Yes, families and children dine here frequently. Guests describe bringing teens, celebrating birthdays with kids and accommodating families; staff are noted as welcoming and helpful. There’s no formal kids’ menu mentioned in reviews, so consider ordering shareable starters, pasta or simpler mains for younger guests and choose an early seating if you prefer a quieter family meal.

Yes, during peak times (Friday/Saturday evenings, theatre nights, holidays) the restaurant gets busy and guests report waits even with reservations. Many guests recommend booking in advance and calling if you have table preferences. If you arrive without a reservation, expect a potential wait or limited seating at the bar.

Busiest: Friday and Saturday nights, theatre nights, holiday evenings and summer patio weekends. Quietest: weekday lunches and earlier midweek dinners. Guests note that Mondays can be a good value night (half-price bottles) and tend to be less hectic than weekend evenings.

It depends on your priorities: choose Monday for wine deals (many guests mention half-price bottles), midweek for a quieter table and weekday lunch for a relaxed visit. If you want the full lively atmosphere, Friday or Saturday evenings deliver the buzzy dining and bar experience, just book in advance for weekend nights.

The owner/manager is frequently mentioned by guests as Sylvain. Many reviews note Sylvain greeting guests and being visible in the dining room, which suggests an engaged owner-manager presence at the restaurant.

Yes, guests frequently report using the Vault Room as a private, intimate space for weddings, birthdays and group dinners. Several reviews praise the Vault Room’s cozy atmosphere and the staff’s handling of set menus for private events. If you need a private room, call ahead to confirm availability and set-up.

They are often open for holiday evenings, guests describe dining at Prime 79 on Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day and New Year’s events. Holiday hours can differ, so call ahead or check the restaurant’s website or social channels for specific public-holiday hours and special menus before planning your visit.

Yes, Prime 79 has a back patio that guests love in warmer months. Reviews frequently praise the patio as a beautiful spot for lunches, dinners and celebrations, calling it one of the best patios in Collingwood. Patio seating can get busy in summer, so reserve if you want outdoor dining.
