I had a lovely dinner at Q for mother's day. The newly renovated dining room is very beautiful. It had modern luxe elements mixed with traditional elements like the elaborate crown molding. To be fair, the prices are steep but worth a once in a while splurge for my mom. The service was attentive and the food was pretty good.

The Q restaurant is a lovely but open space It's very noisy Service is good, but the food is expensive and a bit hit and miss My crab salad and ceviche were both excellent, albeit a bit small. The breaded chicken wings were a bit undercooked Lingcod and chips , fish was okay, but the batter was thick and not crispy. The two mocktails in the menu were permanently unavailable A bottle of sparkling water cost $12 plus (before tip)

We've been twice to this restaurant and both times the service felt rushed and the waiters were both unfriendly. Not worth the money for sure!

We were here last year, and the chef came out and carved a piece of meat, which is what we were expecting. Now they just bring it out, served to you on a plate. Not thrilled about this, and won't be back for Roast night. Food was good, but that type of service made it unique.

FAQs

Busiest: weekend evenings, holiday nights, special events (New Year’s, Thanksgiving) and conference weeks; Sunday evenings are also popular for prime rib/Sunday roast. Quietest: midweek evenings and earlier dinner seatings or weekday breakfasts tend to be calmer. If you prefer a quieter meal, choose a midweek night or request a quieter table away from the bar and service doors.

Yes, Q at The Empress is a popular choice for a special date night. The dining room is elegant and historic with harbour views, refined Northwest cuisine, thoughtful wine pairings and several guests praising anniversaries and romantic celebrations. Be aware it can be lively (bar music and nearby lounge sometimes raise the noise), and prices are on the high side, so plan for a special-occasion budget and consider an early reservation or a quieter midweek night if you want a more intimate experience.

Family-friendly seating is common, many guests bring family for birthday dinners, graduations and Sunday roasts, but accessibility specifics (wheelchair ramps, designated accessible tables) aren’t listed in the provided information. If you need accessible seating or specific accommodations, call the restaurant ahead so staff can reserve an appropriate table or arrange a private room. For families, an earlier seating or a private room can help avoid bar noise and ensure a smoother experience.

Yes, guests mention enjoying drinks on the veranda with gorgeous harbour views, and the restaurant’s description highlights coveted harbour-views of Victoria’s Inner Harbour. If you’d like outdoor or veranda seating, especially for drinks or a scenic meal, call ahead to request a window or veranda table as availability can change with weather and demand.

For a lively, classic Empress experience go on weekend evenings or during special events, Sunday is especially popular for the prime rib/Sunday roast. For a quieter visit, choose midweek or an earlier dinner seating. Avoid conference weeks, big events and late-night bar hours if you want a low-noise, more intimate meal; guests often recommend reservations for holiday or special-occasion nights when the restaurant fills up.

Smart casual is the stated dress code. Guests typically dress up for special occasions like anniversaries, Sunday roast and holiday dinners, so smart casual attire fits well with the restaurant’s elegant setting and refined dining experience.

Yes, private dining and private party options are offered. Guests frequently use Q for celebrations (birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, and corporate events), and staff have been praised for noting special requests and arranging celebratory touches. Contact the restaurant directly to discuss capacity, menus, and booking details for your private event.

The ambience is refined, historic and classically elegant, fitting the Fairmont Empress setting, with polished service, live acoustic music at times, and thoughtfully presented Northwest cuisine. That said, the room can feel lively: guests frequently mention bar noise, live music, and busy service periods that make it less cozy. Overall it’s a great spot for special occasions or a memorable meal, but if you want quiet conversation request a quieter table or a midweek/early booking.

Yes, guests report dining at Q for holiday meals such as Thanksgiving, Easter and New Year’s Eve, so the restaurant operates for special holiday services and celebrations. Because holiday menus and hours can vary, make a reservation well in advance and confirm any special menus or extended hours for the holiday you plan to attend.

Yes, the restaurant frequently accommodates special requests. Guests report staff noting requests on reservation, providing celebration desserts, and accommodating dietary needs (including gluten-free options). For celebrations, seating preferences, accessibility needs, corkage or specific menu changes, call ahead to confirm details and any fees (some guests mentioned a $55 corkage charge and one instance where it wasn’t explained).

Public information about an official waiting list isn’t provided. Guests frequently recommend booking in advance for weekends, holidays, Sunday roast and special events because the restaurant gets busy; calling ahead is the safest way to check availability or ask about waitlist options on the day you plan to visit.

Portions tend to be on the moderate-to-small side for dinner, many guests note carefully plated, smaller mains that pair well with the restaurant’s refined presentation, and some find the price-to-portion ratio high. Breakfast portions were described as generous by several guests. Side orders are sometimes larger than expected and can be shared. If you prefer a heartier meal, consider adding a side or starter, or choosing dishes like the Sunday prime rib, which guests often praise as satisfying.

The restaurant’s publicly listed hours show the bar open daily from 11:00 am to 12:00 am and dinner service daily from 5:30 pm to 9:00 pm. Guests also report breakfast service during hotel stays, so if you’re planning a morning visit call ahead to confirm breakfast service times or special holiday hours.

Q primarily features an elegant main dining room with views of the Inner Harbour, plus a bar/lounge area and the option to host private parties. Guests mention being seated by windows, the veranda for drinks, or occasionally near service doors or the bar (which can be noisy). If you prefer a window table, veranda seating, or a private dining area for a celebration, request it when you book so staff can accommodate your preference.

Families do dine here and many guests celebrate birthdays and milestones with children in tow, so it can be kid-friendly for older children and teens. There’s no evidence of a dedicated kids’ menu and some guests reported slow timing for child meals (a child’s spaghetti arriving late). If you’re bringing young children, consider an early seating or booking a private room and call ahead to discuss menu flexibility.

Sunday is widely praised, especially for the prime rib/Sunday roast, which several guests called the best they’ve had. If you prefer a quieter experience, midweek evenings are recommended. For a festive or special-occasion atmosphere (e.g., New Year’s, Thanksgiving), reserve ahead as those days can be busy and in high demand.
