Now, after three years as Executive Chef of Bice in Chicago, and together with his wife (and sous chef), Veronica, and his cousin (and hostess), Barbara, he decided to continue his gastronomic artistry and creativity in his restaurant named after himself "Riccardo Trattoria."
Here through the craftsmanship of an Italian food connoisseur, dishes are prepared with an almost zen-like essentiality that has shaped Riccardo's professional and existential life course.
What Insiders Are Saying
Classy without being overly pretentious. Riccardo Trattoria is one of our favorite Italian restaurants around.
I would like to lie and say no one should ever go here to avoid competition, that I guess that would not be fair.
Smaller place so get a reservation. Great service even on the really busy Saturday night we were there.
Started with Caprese salad- sounds basic but heirloom tomatoes, fresh capers, fruity olive oil, and classic, really creamy fresh mozzarella made it special. Next course was rigatoni (perfectly cooked) with sausage, peas, and cream red sauce. The capers were big and fresh- low brine, and the peas were clearly fresh. Wonderful.
Should say that we shared these first two dishes- with just two of us we were trying to order as many dishes as we could. Waiter didn’t even blink.
For entrees we had Ravioli stuffed with beef and veal- home made with a meat sauce like momma made and spectacular and veal saltimbocca done perfectly (tender, light sauce, Tuscany potatoes to soak up the delicious sauce.
Almost forgot, wine list is short, sweet, and fair.
Not dessert people but saw Copas al tre gusti - think Spinone made with whipped gelato. To die for.
Oh, I didn’t mention the owner was watching the kitchen like a hawk- every dish was inspected and i suspect no one in the kitchen dared to disappoint.
Try it but ration your visits so it doesn’t get impossible to book!
A small neighborhood Italian restaurant with fabulous food like Mama use to make.
Great food and awesome service but so noisy. Not a place to go if you want to talk.
Great authentic Italian food. Knowledgeable wait staff.
Riccardo Trattoria is always a guaranteed lovely dinner. The food is good. The wines are good and the Tiramisu a great diner cap.
Excellent! Food was delicious and service was exceptional. Would definitely return.
If you dont have to wait a long time then eat here it's not worth the hour or more wait... It's really not their fault, its the people that gotta sit around for 2 hours after they ate and shoot the s**t...
It's a small nice place with an authentic feel good food but nothing crazy.
Food is always wonderful here and I always keep coming back!
Penne was about one minute under cooked (at least the way I like it). Sauce had amazing taste but slightly too salty. Ravioli was again amazing but a little too salty. Service was fantastic (very attentive without being overbearing).
Unhurried but well paced professional service, neighborhood atmosphere. The food was well executed, and well seasoned. Wine list reasonably priced and not overwhelming.
Went here for a birthday dinner and were extremely pleased with our experience. The food was delicious, good portions for the price and the restaurant is a very pleasant place. Our server was efficient and friendly. No complaints and some of the best food either of us has had in a long while!
Awesome Italian restaurant!!
We happened to be in the area on Friday night and when we decided to go grab a bite, I remembered having this plane on my radar! It did not disappoint! It is quaint and quiet, a perfect place to have an outstanding meal and still be able to have great conversation with your dinner mates. Can't wait to go back!
Friendly get together.
I was excited to try this place as I had heard and read many great things about this established restaurant. Expecting a warm and fuzzy welcome, we were welcomed with a rudeness and cold waiter. The food was bland and lacked flavor. The pasta was overcooked and wasn’t even offered black pepper or parmesan! I don’t think I will be going back here again. Very huge disappointment!
Perfect. Perfect. Perfect.
Food was fabulous with an abundance of specials and a fair amount of unusual dishes not typically found in all Italian restaurant. Although we could only get an early reservation, the staff did not hurry us along tp turn the table. Service was attentive and knowledgeable about the menu. Great find.
Wonderful food, attentive and accommodating service. Loved the polenta, arugula salad and orecchiette pasta! We are going back there soon.
It's not a big place so don't go without reservations. Even with reservations you may still wait 20 minutes for your table. It's nice that they don't rush you.
Wonderful food and service
Every course was delicious
Excellent meal with many food options. Service was exceptional.
The service and food amazing. The table for 2 was an after thought. Wish we were in the main area. Waiter made up for it.
MY wife and I took some friends there for an amazing dinner. One guest was over 90 and had no problem hearing our conversation. Th place was full of people enjoying themselves yet the sound level allowed for great conversation whether across the table of talking to my friends adjacent to me. The food - as always - was fantastic and worth the price.
amazing food. great service. best Italian restaurant in Chicago
Reservations a must and plan head if considering on a weekend. This place gets crowded fast as the food is REALLY good!
The bean/kale soup was AMAZING. Great entrees and wine. The Old Fashion was simple (alcohol and maraschino cherry juice) and not my favorite but drinkable on a cold night.
This is me and my boyfriend first time here celebrating our anniversary. The food and server is very good. Only thing I don’t care is table is too close too other table.
The food and service was fabulous! We will be back with friends!
Was recommended to us by a friend...yay, it was fabulous!
Amazing consistent good food.
The food is the star at Riccardo. We began dinner sharing a risotto meatball entree. It was an exceptional starter. Our entrees were veal with mushrooms and marsala, while I enjoyed bucatini carbonara. The were prepared perfectly. The issue of this neighborhood hot spot is that it didn’t feel as though we were dining, we were only eating. This place is so densely packed and the food comes out so rapidly, we were in and out within an hour. Not much of a night out. As long as you are ready for a potentially quick meal, this place is really good.
The best veal shop I ever ate!!! Fabulous food, ambiance and service.
GREAT PLACE TO DINE...FOOD IS VERY AUTHENTIC!!! WILL GO BACK
Food was spot on. Service was average. Dining room and ambience could use a refresh.
We enjoyed another spectacular evening here. The waiters are attentive yet not intrusive. The complimentary bruschetta was simple and delicious. We followed with salads and the grilled octopus and a seafood risotto. Everything was brought to the table at the correct temperature and timing. We also sampled several outstanding desserts with the favorite being the pana cotta. I'm still dreaming of it!
Best Italian restaurant in Chicago
The food, the service, our waiter Silvani, and the best martinis! It's nice to go out on a Friday night in the city and NOT see people I know @ a restaurant!! That tells me Riccardo's has a very curated clientele, which I appreciate. It's all about the authenticity of the experience. The lobster risotto was magnificent....huge chunks of flavorful lobster throughout. The only misstep was the complimentary bruschetta.......really not representative of the rest of our food: soggy, lacking in robust flavor and mealy ingredients. If I had ordered it, I would have sent it back.
Best authentic Italian in Chicago. Its not close!
We love Riccardos!
The food was absolutely exquisite. We ordered some of the daily specials and they were very fresh and very delicious. They put together a special dish for me which also had terrific flavors. The waitress and kitchen were very accomodating.
Wonderful, as always!
This is our favorite neighborhood Italian restaurant
