The omakasi experience was incredible. The care that chef had with everything that she brought to us, there was an incredible story behind the selection of each fish and dish that we had.

Satsuki is always amazing. Their fish is fresh, the presentation is beautiful. Chef May attends to each dish with the great details. Fresh real wasabi and yuzu as well as their house made sauces and pickled ginger to complement. Chef May is also an expert in sake. Trained in Japan, she knows the history and would gladly share her knowledge about honoring the traditions of Japanese food and drinks. Satsuki has become our favourite Japanese restaurant.

We’ve been a few times previously. This time around, the lunch was not as good. Food quality and service were not as good as usual, probably owing to a large party being present with only the owner as the lone server. Also, the deep fryer smell from the kitchen was detectable in the dining room for some reason.

The owner was present and engaged throughout the dining experience. She enriched it with suggestions and even a nice offering not on the menu as a first time diner to the restaurant. This is an overlooked gem in Kensington.

Very friendly and attentive staff. A nice quiet and relaxed getaway without too much noise. The food was very good including unique sushi rolls, home prepared ginger and soya sauce. A pleasure to dine here.

FAQs

Portions vary by format, generous for lunch bento boxes, tasting-sized for omakase, and shareable for appetizers. Guests say the lunch bento offers good value and plenty of food, while omakase is a multi-course tasting designed for pacing and variety rather than large single portions. Sashimi and some a la carte items are described as generous and high-quality, so plan to share plates or add rolls if you’re very hungry.

Yes, Satsuki is a popular choice for date night. Guests frequently describe a quiet, intimate and zen-like atmosphere with attentive service, thoughtful plating and a strong sake program. The omakase or a shared sushi/kaiseki-style meal makes for a special, memorable evening. Note the space is small and cozy, so it’s best for a quieter, close-table experience rather than a large, noisy group; reservations are recommended.

Satsuki offers a calm, refined and intimate ambience, guests frequently call it ‘zen-like’, quiet and relaxing with thoughtful presentation and good acoustics. The small footprint creates a cozy feel; service is attentive and personable, often led by Chef May and the owners. Expect a refined yet approachable Japanese dining vibe suited for special evenings or relaxed lunches.

Business casual is recommended. Guests often dine here for special occasions like anniversaries and birthdays, and many mention an elevated yet relaxed setting. Dress comfortably but neatly, the vibe is polished without being overly formal.

Satsuki is open Wednesday through Sunday from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM. If you’re planning a special omakase or dinner service, booking ahead is wise since seating is limited and popular times fill up.

Families do dine here, and guests bring children for birthdays and family meals, but Satsuki is best suited for older kids and teens. The space is small with bar/high-table seating, and there isn’t a children’s menu. If bringing younger children, consider an early seating and call ahead to discuss seating and menu flexibility so your visit is comfortable.

The restaurant is owner-operated and closely associated with Chef May (Chef May Ng), who frequently greets guests and leads the omakase experience. Many guests note the owner/chef is present, engaged, and passionate about the menu and sake selections, which contributes to the personalized service and atmosphere.

Yes, guests report attentive, accommodating service and personalized touches (e.g., special treats for first-time diners or birthday desserts). If you need seating preferences, dietary accommodations, or want to request the omakase/sake pairing, call the restaurant when booking so they can note your request. For large or specific requests, advance notice is best to allow the kitchen time to prepare.

For a quieter experience, choose weekday lunch or an early weeknight; several guests note Sunday and weekday evenings are less busy. If you want the full omakase with sake pairing, book a dinner reservation in advance, weekends and prime evening slots fill up quickly. Early dinners or midweek visits often offer the most relaxed pacing and more flexible seating.

Partially, families do dine here and guests celebrate birthdays and family meals, but the space is small with mostly bar seating and a few long high tables. That layout can feel cramped for strollers or large groups. If accessibility or wheelchair access is a concern, call ahead to confirm accommodations and request appropriate seating; staff have been described as helpful and willing to assist.
