Always a pleasure to dine at Sumika. We were a group of 6, including two teenagers. We all loved the food, the sake selection and desserts. We will be back soon! Thank you!

Excellent, freshly prepared kushiaki-without question representative of this style of Japanese cooking. Broad array of choices and we found everything delicious and reasonably priced. Service was first rate and coirteous throughout.

There are two tables in the restaurant that's right next to the door that leads to the bathrooms. Unfortunately, our table happened to be one of them and I felt like we were getting interrupted with people going in/out.

The service is really bad. I really think the quality of food and tasting is getting much worse than before.

FAQs

Yes, families dine here and guests often bring teens or celebrate birthdays with children. The menu focuses on skewers and small plates rather than a children’s menu, so bringing familiar options or planning to share a few dishes works well. For younger children, consider an early seating and call ahead to discuss any needs.

Yes, Sumika offers a cozy, intimate izakaya vibe that works very well for date night. Guests praise the warm calligraphy-decor, attentive service, and an open kitchen that feels lively without being loud. The menu of kushiyaki yakitori, wagyu skewers, shareable small plates, and a broad sake selection makes it easy to craft a relaxed, multi-course meal. Consider an early dinner or a table near the open kitchen for atmosphere.

Yes, the restaurant asks that you call for lunch reservations and calling ahead is a good way to make special requests (seating preference, dietary needs, birthday notes). The lunch reservation number provided is 1-650-917-1822; for dinner or other requests, call during business hours to confirm availability.

Family-friendly: yes, many guests dine with teens and celebrate birthdays, so families are welcomed. Seating: the space is small and cozy with some tables close to the restrooms, plus seating by the open kitchen and outdoor tables. Accessibility details (wheelchair ramps, restroom accessibility) aren't provided in available information, call ahead to confirm specific accessibility needs.

Weekdays (Mon–Thu) or lunch service are ideal if you want a quieter, more relaxed visit. If you’re seeking a lively, celebratory atmosphere, Friday or Saturday evening is best. Sunday evenings close earlier and can feel calmer than weekend nights.

Yes, Sumika offers outdoor seating in addition to its cozy indoor space and counter/open-kitchen seating. Outdoor tables are a good option if you prefer some fresh-air dining.

Warm, casual izakaya-style ambience, calligraphy and warm-colored décor create an intimate, Tokyo-like feel. Guests consistently describe Sumika as cozy, welcoming, and authentic with attentive service and the lively presence of an open kitchen. It’s a relaxed spot for friends, couples, and family celebrations.

Portions are generally skewer- and small-plate sized and designed for sharing. Many guests describe the kushiyaki and skewers as flavorful but not overly large, a few reviewers noted they wished some skewers had more meat for the price. Pair several skewers with salads, rice bowls (oyako don), or appetizers to build a satisfying meal.

Busiest: Fri–Sat evenings and weekend dinners, guests frequently celebrate birthdays and groups on those nights. Quietest: weekday lunches and early weekday dinners tend to be calmer. If you prefer a low-key meal, try lunch or an early weeknight seating.

For a quieter experience, aim for weekday lunch or early weeknight dinners. Guests report lively weekend dinners and celebratory groups, so Fri–Sat evenings tend to be busier. If you prefer atmosphere without crowds, try lunch or an early weekday dinner; for a celebratory vibe, weekend evenings are a great choice.
