What Insiders Are Saying
Does eating at Sunda feel like eating in the club? Yes, but you don't have to love the ChampagnePapi lifestyle to love this restaurant.
The vibe at Sunda was awesome, a bit boisterous but my friends and I could still hear each other at a round table for 5. The sushi was excellent and everything else was delicious and presentation so thoughtful. I will definitely be returning!
I took my mom to Sunda when she was visiting me for the weekend in Chicago. The food is pricey, but it's delicious and there is a wide variety of options on the menu. The wait staff was knowledgeable and provided phenomenal service. I would argue that Sunda has some of the best wait staff in Chicago. It was noisy, but energetic for a Friday night. I would definitely recommend Sunda to anyone visiting Chicago!
Food was delicious. Very lively. A bit loud. Food was delicious...
Disappointed with the short sushi selection and as for the fusion cuisine is was meh. Only one entree stood out and the dessert was meh! Cocktails were good.
This is about my 10th time at Sunday - the food is still good but not as great as before - the duck fried rice was too oily - the lobster-bacon sushi roll was mediocre - they really need to get back to the precision asian fusion restaurant that they were in the past.
Never again. I had high hopes, especially after all the positive reviews and press, but Sunda was just plain bad. The highlight was my tequila signature cocktail, which was truly magnificent. The service was so inattentive it was embarrassing as we were hosting an out of town guest. Getting recommendations from the waitstaff was like pulling teeth.
The food, especially for the price point, was just plain poor. The biggest disappointment being the proteins in the drunken noodles dish. The beef was so overcooked and sinewy that it was gross. And the shrimp was just about the worst cooked shrimp I've ever had; they were obliterated due to overcooking, dried and mealy. And to top it all off I have had, I'm embarrassed to admit, a better spicy tuna roll from the grocery store. No bueno!
The two top next to us was too close and too loud. Made it hard to enjoy. But the baked crab roll was great
Food is always great here! Service was good. Overall great lunch!
Had an early dinner so the noise level was lower than normal. Sunda always has a great menu with that extra dimension into the food that pops out as you are eating it. We haven't been to Sunda in about 12 months and were a little disappointed the menu has not been revamped enough to keep it as exciting. The classics are good but I would have loved to try some new innovative dishes
Food was delicious and creative. Unique dishes. The service was excellent.
Made our first trip to Chicago worth it. The waitress was so nice and helpful, she had great knowledge about the menu and was great to talk to. Love this place and will defiantly be back!
Anniversaries and birthday
Fabulous dinner and drinks with family and friends. We were seated promptly for our 8:00 reservation. Everything we tried was outstanding! We ordered many of the small plates and a few of the large, and shared it all. You won’t be disappointed!
I have very much enjoyed the new Sunda in Nashville, so while in Chicago, I decided to treat my foodie cousin to the wonders of Sunda's flavor spectrum. She was blown away at the freshness, quality and flavorful surprises of Sunda's vast menu. I've never had a less than spectacular dish at either location. The pan fried brussels sprouts are the best I've ever tasted (and I've had countless attempts at the same dish.) The Thai Lemongrass Salad was refreshing, a mesh of savory tastes: cilantro, peanut, lemongrass, basil. The chicken, glass noodles and shredded veggies brought an array of pleasing texture. We loved the velvety Miso Bronzed Black Cod. Decadent and memorable. Three dishes were more than enough for us, but then we're older women and not huge eaters. Still, on the whole the servings are quite generous. I highly recommend bringing a crowd to this restaurant and sharing everything. Once, in Nashville, we asked the chef to surprise six of us. It was a truly thrilling meal.
This is my third time. It is always a very loud environment, but that translates into people enjoying themselves. The Red Dragon roll was amazing, and the tuna Tartare was as well. The yellowtail jalapeño was great as well! I absolutely loved the Brussel Sprout salad as well. I have always enjoyed my meals here!
Really nothing special, overpriced, just nice interior, food under everage
10 year anniversary. Great food and service was nice. However this is definitely NOT the place to go to have a conversation. It is so unbelievably loud that the waitress kept trying to tell us things and all we could do is watch her mouth move. It became comical. Probably will not go back
I always get a great meal at Sunda. The service is good and it’s a lunch favorite.
Fantastic place to meet friends for dinner or a first date.
This was my second time eating at this establishment and we were fortunate to have the same waiter. He was funny, charming, attentive and made every single option sound aww so delectable! The food did not disappoint and we had absolutely no wait time. The food came out in decent time and my part had an enjoyable dinner.
Very good experience. We came in before a shift change, so service was a little slow but I understand this, I’ve worked in food service before. Menu had a great variety. I orded a bento box with chicken. When it came out, the sushi had been forgetten, but this was quickly resolved. To be honest, the chicken was a little dry, but the seasonings were great. I’d definitely come back again, but maybe I’ll just order something else. Everything else was awesome.
Great and quality food. Servers are friendly and knowledgeable about gluten free.
Our Sunda experience was OK......the food was above average, but the noise level in the restaurant is ridiculous to the point of being objectionable. We could not even carry on a conversation across the table, and we all have exceptional hearing...there are too many other options that have great ambience, so sadly I do not recommend this restaurant, nor will we return. Too bad, as the food was good.
The duck buns are a must! This particular time they were quite dry and the skin was a bit too crispy but typically they are wonderful. The Brussel sprout salad was amazing as always!!! Love the space and energy!
They entirely forgot one of our entrees. When we found the waiter to bring this to his attention, we were done with the rest of our meal and asked him to remove the item from our bill. As compensation, he tossed us an expired $10 coupon with our bill, which was offensive for several reasons considering his poor service spoiled our entire evening out. We won't be returning, even with an expired coupon. Thanks but no thanks.
Our waiter forgot oue drinks, we had food and flaged her for drinks. When I suggested it should be on a house, she gave us an attitude....so we paid for everything and not coming back 😉
This place was terrible. It was recommended by a friend as a hot spot. First they sat us in a corner kind of in front of a door that was also dark, soo awkward when the waiters walk by. They were nice enough to move us though. Atmosphere was a little more causal than i thought it would be. I was in a beautiful dress, meanwhile there were guys and girls in sweatshirts and sweaters.
I was there for my birthday and told the waiter I wanted a fun birthday drink. And ordered a miso soup for starters. He never wished me a Happy Birthday or did anything for it. Did not bring it my miso soup, and brought my gfs sushi before my meal came. I got some chicken thing that's in a soup bowl, there were literally like 4 pieces of chicken. I was still hungry. I'm a girl, I don't eat a ton in a dress. He brought back the bowl and took about 30 MINUTES to bring out a new one. After about 15 I didn't even want anything else I was just ready to leave. When they brought it out, I know they put old chicken in the bowl and it was diisguusting. They did end up removing the miso soup I didn't get, and the dinner. I was just so ready to leave. AWFUL birthday dinner experience. The bar accidentally made an extra drink so he brought me that and was like oh yeah happy birthday. I mean thanks, but wow. Me and my gf are not that hard to please. I would reccommend Tao! Had great service, they brought me a birthday dessert with candle without even asking and my gf said the sushi was 10xs better. Plus it was a little more upscale.
I dined here a few years ago and loved it. When I had a group of friends in town I thought it would be a great place to come back to. Definitely did not live up to my expectations. The whole restaurant seemed lazy to me. The bathrooms were not very clean, the waitress did not offer much help with the menu. We were having new plates dropped off at our table (which also came late) and they were dirty/had food still on them. I am not sure what has changed but there are way too many other great restaurants in the city to waste time and money here.
Very great and unique options! Love the Filipino influence on the menu. Made our girls dinner that much more special! Oxtail potstickers are to die for!
It’s awesome, foods are great as well as the services, will come here again
I’m from out of town, and came to try a unique food experience. Sunda was in a great location, quietly nestled within the bustle of downtown Chicago. The staff was very friendly and accommodating to our dietary needs as well. The food came very quickly and was more than enough! Couldn’t have asked for a better experience when dining.
All was great but it was too loud. Very very loud.
I absolutely love Sunda. I lived in Chicago from 2010 to 2014 and would eat here often. I returned a few times since and it is still just as good.
Too noisy to hear the person sitting across from me.
Had 3 pricey Sunda old fashioneds without a buzz. Completely watered down with huge ice cube.
Food was overly salty. Staff slow to clear empty drinks and plates.
Did not live to my expectations. Prior reviews were all great but I'm used to higher quality food in terms of flavour, creativity, and presentation.
The four of us went for a special occasion, but it was a total disappointment. So loud you can’t hear anyone at your table. The sushi was mediocre. The food lacked flavor. We had to send back the chicken because it was way over-cooked. I’m not sure why there are so many good reviews. We all thought it was overpriced and underwhelming.
The chili albacore dish was so amazing that we immediately ordered albacore sashimi. The hamachi tartare was terrific. The service was excellent, and the staff work together to make sure you have what you need. There is a nice wine list. And the servings are big enough to share...if you want to!
Awesome variety of Asian fusion entrees and sharables. Vibrant atmosphere. Superior service.
