I FINALLY made it to Thattu and actually celebrated my birthday here last evening. This beautiful neighborhood restaurant in Avondale has made many Best Lists and for good reason. Owner and Chef @marzlet is self taught and bring her passion for Southwest Indian coastal cuisine through magical dishes to hungry diners in Chicago! She was even this year’s semi-finalist for the James Beard Awards! . . . . . . . . . #chicagopescetarian #thattuchicago #thingstodoinchicago #chicagofood #westloop #chicagogram #chicagofood #westloopchicago#chicagorestaurants #seafood #chicagoreels #chicagoriverwalk #indianfood #avondalechicago

Chicago’s dining scene has always gone its own way—and this year’s list of best new restaurants continues the tradition. With no-holds-barred attitudes, chefs are tapping into their own heritages and experiences to cook food that is just as personal as it is delicious. From a Ukrainian restaurant by a James Beard Award-winning duo to a New York Times-approved South Indian spot to steakhouses that march to their own drum beats, these newcomers are ones to watch. Read on for a guide to Chicago’s seven hottest restaurant openings of 2023.

For 20 years as a dining editor and food writer, I’ve had front-row seats to the evolution of Chicago’s restaurants as I covered them for publications like CS, Chicago Tribune and Time Out. While it’s kept me on my toes (and in the gym), I’m lucky to watch them grow: A decades-old seafood spot has served oysters long before they became fixtures all over town; a third-generation Italian favorite still relies on family recipes to make magical lasagna and braciola; and a popular southwestern Indian restaurant traces its origins to a humble pop-up in a food hall. Whether you’re looking for a festive vibe with terrific Southern food to match or a special-occasion star with MICHELIN cred, my 12 tried-and-tested Chicago restaurants won’t let you down.
