Food was great but the QR code ordering system is absurd and spoils the meal. Everybody on phones - order drinks and appetisers. Then everybody on phones again during appetisers to order mains so the wait isn’t long. For such a nice restaurant and setting to add on 20% service charge automatically for using the system, feels like a robbery. Bring back the servers to take orders. I would NOT recommend the restaurant while this system is in place. - DP

We made a reservation for 7:45 and arrived 15 minutes early. We had asked for outside seating. We were seated 45 minutes after our reservation time and was not seated outside. They said their kitchen was backed up and would not let us go to the bar to wait but let another person go right after us. Mass confusion and no one seemed to know what they were supposed to do. Never again. - OT

We had to wait 50 minutes to be seated despite the fact that we had a reservation. Server was accommodating and knowledgeable but also felt rushed. Kitchen was backed up and you could sense the stress in the servers. Parmesan truffle fries had been sitting awhile and were served cold and had no truffle seasoning on them. Lots of Parmesan and garlic. Oysters were great as always. They ran out of avocado for the shrimp tacos that my son and I both ordered. Also, instructions to make the chicken sandwich without hot dust were not followed and they did not put the pickles on the side as requested. We didn’t get any pickles at all. We were told after the fact that the lemonades that two of my kids ordered were not included in free refills. You can’t beat the location and beauty of this place, however we were seated next to a speaker that due to our proximity, was too loud. Beautiful view though. Also didn’t like all the food being brought out at the same. Should’ve been asked what we wanted as appetizers. My son’s soup and my oysters came out with our meals. Also, the table bread was good, which we were told to ask for bc the kids were starving by the time we actually got our table BUT you had to wait for that as well which defeated the purpose of trying to get a little something in their stomachs after waiting almost an hour past reservation time. Overall, the outdoor seating you can’t beat, the food is good, but it was overall not as relaxing or enjoyable as it should have been. Definitely wouldn’t come back on a Saturday but I’ve had some of these issues on weeknights too. If you do come on a weekend plan to wait, reservation or not, and don’t arrive starving. - WG

I had difficulty bringing up the menu from my phone. This is the first time it has not worked for me. The menu would show up for a millisecond, and then it would disappear. It worked fine on my husband's phone. The waiter brought us a tablet too. The table was very sticky. They brought our salads with no dressing, even the Caesar salad. It took a while to get someone to remedy that situation. My crabcake dinner was pretty good; my husband had the new chicken dish and he lived it. The waiter was very nice. - BG

It was a fun evening with friends. The food was good. My main complaint is the system for ordering and paying. Our poor waitress was great because with a larger group with each of us wanting to pay individually and not understanding “the system”, she had to help us a lot. We were so glad when management stopped by our table and said in a couple of weeks they would be returning to the “old system” of the waiters taking your orders and payments. - JM

My wife and I both ordered the broiled seafood platter. The crabcake, asparagus and mashed potatoes were good. However, the shrimp was only fair, and the bay scallops were tasteless! For the $44.00 price I expected tasty sea scallops. Like other guests, we also struggled with the application ordering system. The automatic 20% service charge, with a request for an additional tip, was disappointing. The service was very good. However, despite the great view, we won't return. - CG

We had a wonderful table waterside and saw a beautiful sunset. They have a new ordering system where you order on their app ordering system at your table instead of ordering with your server. So if it's your first time, it goes very slowly and there's a lot to absorb. Make sure you only order your appetizers and your cocktails initially and wait until they arrive at the table to order your entrées. We had the fried shrimp coleslaw and fries it was all good, followed by the turtle cheesecake which was excellent although a small slice. I would probably not choose this restaurant for indoor dining. - DC

The experience was horrible to say the least. We arrived at 7pm for dinner. Once we were seated we ordered tea which was brought to us in Togo cups. We finally received glasses when our appetizer came at 7:45. From this point on we never say the waitress again. At 8:20 we noticed that multiple tables around us were receiving accommodations for there wait, appetizers salads and mixed drinks. Neither of the managers ever came to even apologize for our wait or offer to accommodate us. The ironic thing is we were there at least an hour be for the tables around us. Not once during this experience did we complain or cause a scene. When we received our food at 8:30 we just ate, paid our bill and left. Felt as if we were being treated as a trouble table for no apparent reason. I thought it was rather amusing that the female manager with the glasses was catering to a group of belligerent guests. This restaurant has Beautiful scenery, good food, but is a poorly ran restaurant. Educate your managers and staff, and only accommodate the number of guests your staff can handle. - OT

We (along with everyone else we've talked to) do not like the QR code ordering system. Food was good and view was beautiful. A little pricey for what you get. - DZ

Setting: Gorgeous views on the lake - can't beat this anywhere in Richmond. Menus: No printed menus - so you have to use your phone to read the options and this was not very easy to access. Old school menus would be nice. Service: Kelly - our server - was great. Very attentive and cheerful. Unfortunately, half of our party got their meals after about 30 minutes, while the rest of our party waited 20 minutes more. Not sure if this was mixed-up in the kitchen or otherwise. Food: Salads are not good, avoid them. (The greens were bitter, and there are only 2 options for salad dressing.) Sandwiches, fries, soups were all good. Would appreciate having more Gluten Free options. - CF

It took forever to get food then it was either over cooked or cold. I have been to this restaurant a lot this time the service and quality of food was very poor. I couldn’t even get a refill on my drink. My appetizer came at the same time as my meal an hour after ordering, but my friend didn’t get anything she ordered. - LK

We sat at a tall table near the bar and I didn’t know that if we used the Toast Order & Pay barcode option to place our order and pay, that when I went to settle my tab, I was going to be charged a 20% Service fee for placing my own order and answering my own questions about the menu while having minimal interaction with the bartender or anyone for that matter. This ultimately took away from the tip of the bartender because I REFUSE to pay 35% for nonexistent service. I’ve never experienced service good enough to warrant that amount. I felt like I was misled by the hostess sharing the convenience of the app but not the cost to the diner. The food was good but that experience left a bad taste in my mouth. - BP

This was my second time to the boathouse this week . I had such a great experience with the first time but this time the food took over a hour the waitress was definitely not pleased to be working she was pleasant but not attentive by any means . I totally understand it’s a adjustment doing the hybrid method of taking orders and doing the toast tab but a lot of things were forgotten. I do have to give credit to one hostess or server that stepped up and was observant that we were waiting on a refill for over 30 min and my sons drink was over 45 min for a Shirley temple . We were able to get service through her quickly . I totally understand short staffed and kitchen being backed up we were patient when my son got his meal and we waited till way after he finished to get ours . Just a totally different experience this time vs the many times we have come before . We will still be back and recommend this restaurant to anyone that wants a amazing atmosphere and food . - A

The view never gets old; too bad the service is terrible. They’ve gone to a 20% gratuity model on each check. Regardless of how hard your server works (or doesn’t work in my case) the 20% is non- negotiable. It seems to be promoting the “participation award” sentiment rather than work hard for a tip. The food was ok, when it finally came out; definitely not worth the price. Fortunately the manager was willing to work with me on the check once I expressed my disappointment. Don’t bother going for a meal; drinks and view only. - DD

Be prepared to eat in shifts with your dinner companions. The ambiance is terrific, with a wonderful view of the Lake from the seating on the deck. Five adults ordered brunch/lunch. One of the oreders, a simple bacon cheeseburger arrived 10 minutes after the other meals. The bacon was almost raw and the cheeseburger, ordered "no pink", was also raw in the center. My guest asked the manager to have the order correcte. After the rest of our table had finished their meals and the dishes had been cleared, the reordered cheeseburger finally appeared---40 minutes later! The manager who delivered it stated," Sorry it's late, can I get you anything else?" Unacceptable at any restaurant. The food for the other members of my party was o.k., but nothing special, given the price. I have had better food from fast food joints. Our server, Jen, was charming and efficient, and was very helpful assisting us in ordering when we had difficulty accessing the menu from our phones (Why you are required to input your name and phone number to see the menu. (Selling info?) The lovely ambiance due to the view was certainly not worth the hassle of watching my guest wait for 40 minutes for a simple dish food that was poorly prepared to start with, and dry and tasteless when finally served. Thoses iffy reviews I had ignored proved correct. Never again. - BS

There was an error and some confusion in regard to what menu was offered on Saturday. While we ended up not dinning this time, the service team and manager were amazing. They always go above and beyond to make your experience here worth it. One of our favorite spots. - M

Our evening was not the ideal experience we expected from our typical visits to the boathouse. We had reservations as 5:30pm for dinner because we have an 8month old and wanted to eat before his bedtime. We were seated promptly and our server introduced himself. He helped us order cocktails and apps. A few of the drinks and appetizers were not delivered promptly, but we were not deterred. Once we ordered dinner, we enjoyed the view and our drinks. 1 hour later our dinner had still not arrived and our 8 month old was not pleased to have missed his bedtime. We requested to speak with a manager about the delay with dinner and James came to speak with us. We explained the situation and our frustration and I cannot put into words how incredible this manager was. He went above and beyond to remedy the situation. We will continue to be loyal customers even after this experience. - RD

The view is amazing! The food was average but the service was not there. In fact I did all of the ordering for my table. I should have been given the mandatory 20% tip that is added on. Our server definitely did not earn a $32 tip. When I go out to eat I expect to be waited on and served. They just have food runners now. - OT

Great meal and beautiful scenery. Little overpriced for the portion sizes but you are paying mostly for the scenery. Still doing QR codes and ordering by phone which just means for the first 30 minutes everyone is just sitting on their phones instead of enjoying the atmosphere. Also, adds a 20% gratuity no matter what even though you have very minimal contact with the server. - DT

Food is good. They don’t take your order, you type it in on your phone and they bring it to you when it’s ready. Also they add 20% service charge so just be aware. They probably figure people wouldn’t tip 20% with that service model. - OT

We’ve loved this place for years. The online food ordering is a bit annoying as you pay gratitude my bit actually do not get any service. The food portions have gone WAY down. Do not expect a lot of food.
