One of the best restaurants in Atlanta these days!
It's a relatively small place with a small menu focused on steak and a bar scene. The essential problem is that it's just overpriced. Even the Prix Fixe special, only available early on certain days, is $40. And the a la carte menu is a good bit pricier - easy to spend more than $100 - $120 per person for a complete meal with a couple of glasses of wine. The least expensive wine is $10, but most of the wines are priced at $15 up. The atmosphere is dark and homey but a bit dated. Service is very informal. The food, while simple, is excellent.
My partner and I chose the Federal after spending the early evening at the High Museum. We chose to sit outside since the weather was pleasant. Service was great with an attentive but not intrusive waiter. The drinks came quickly and were very good. They have a extensive wine list and a variety of cocktails. We ordered the porterhouse for 2 which was outstanding with garlic spinach & fries as sides. Definitely enjoyed the entire experience and will return
We had a lovely time at the restaurant . Food was really good just a little pricier than we thought it should be for what they offer. One of our guests did have a incident though. She bent over in her chair to pick up her glasses and her chair slide out from underneath her causing her to fall on the floor. She was ok but the chairs do slide very easy on the type of flooring that was used in the restaurant. The staff was very nice and did come right over to ask if she was ok. We will definitely be back even if it’s for some drinks and hang at the bar.
Good hidden secret of Crescent Street on back side of the 1010 building
Steak was very good
Only negative was a little pricey however very good overall experience
Father’s Day Brunch
Father’s Day brunch was perfect. The outdoor dining was nice and watching people was great but the side walk is on a slope so watch your drinks.
Enjoyed dinner at the bar. Great service from our bartender — thank you!
Disappointing steak frites which has been much better on prior occasions. Need to lift their game for a $45 entree!!!
The dinner was simply superb! Service excellent. One of the best dinners we have had in Atlanta.
The food was very good!
Let me start off by saying, this negative review is not in any way tied to our server/service. He did all he could to make our dining experience pleasurable. If you're going to call yourself a steakhouse, the most important thing is to learn how to cook a steak, or at least have the forethought to check it before it gets sent to a table. And even then, if you get it wrong once, you should definitely check it the second time it goes to the table, right? We received a pretty well done steak round 1 (ordered medium rare) and then a very bloody rare steak round 2. They finally got it right the 3rd time, but wanted to keep it on the bill, which is their prerogative, but if you want to have integrity with your steak (at a steakhouse), you shouldn't make the guests/waiter ask management to take care of something like that. It puts everyone in an awkward situation which caps off a very mediocre meal. Also, don't order the au poivre sauce.
Nice quaint small space, which is nice for intimate dinners. Treated Mom for Mom's Day. Easy parking and access (will validate garage parking). We had a attentive wait staff. Trouble with one steak but it was replaced by mgr with the charge being removed as well. I will return to try other entrees.
Lovely anniversary dinner!
The Federal is becoming our favorite spot in our neighborhood for a date night. We share apps and then split a great steak. We especially loved the brussels sprouts caesar and steak tartare, the KitKat at dessert is a must. Our most recent server was knowledgeable, efficient, but relaxed and never overbearing or intrusive.
our server forgot to bring her oysters, but then she did and they were full of shells and very unappetizing. The food was OK, and it was generally a disappointing experience. She brought our oysters in the middle of dinner and didn’t even apologize. In all, I would not return .
We LOVE The Federal.
My steak was a little too salty and fatty for my taste.
The food was excellent. The chef has a great palate. All of the dishes were well-seasoned and well-balanced.
What has been a Midtown go-to, one of the best hidden gems in all of ATL, The Federal has "gone south." I was so very disappointed in Saturday evening's experience. First red flag... virtually no one was in the dining area. Secondly, the service was spotty if not terrible and the food - while "good" - was eons away from the many previous dining experiences I've relished here. My fear is it's the beginning of the end... Shaun D may have thrown in the towel on this once opon a time outstanding restaurant. Ugh. So very sad.
The food was great and the atmosphere was very nice, kind of a retro high end diner feel. The issue was the service and it might be the reason there were literally only 3 tables with people at them when we sat down for brunch. Here's a list of issues with the service (the server was very nice and apologized but did't really help):
- Food took almost an hour to come, it's breakfast and nobody was there so they weren't busy
- Had to ask for coffee for one of our party 3 times
- asked for scrambled egg whites, came standard with yolks
- ordered a side of bread, it came as we were paying the bill
- had to flag the server down to get the check after waiting about 15 minutes after he already cleared our plates.
If the food is just OK but the service is great I'll go back. When the food is good but the service is terrible, I usually won't. I'll give it another try as the server was nice but can't recommend the restaurant as I can't imagine what the service would be like if they were busy
We loved the atmosphere and music playing in the background. We were excited about $1 oysters, but they were only available at the bar. It was disappointing, but the food was fantastic and the drinks were delicious. We had a great time.
The Flounder was excellent, so was the accompanying asparagus!
My spouses Pork Schnitzel was plain and bland accompanied with naked onions. The Cabernet was very good. The chocolate dessert was ok but would not order again. The very nice gentleman waiter was very attentive but seemed rushed, as he was the only waiter there for seven tables! I would go back again for the flounder if it was cooked with the same sauce!
Very small menu. Pricey! Pompous staff (not our waitress) but other. Won’t be back
The dining area was quaint and illuminated with candle lights, giving it a cozy feel. Upon entering the restaurant you see the different cuts of meat they have to offer. The noise level was loud, but after half a Manhattan you settled in and it became great dining area. The server, Michael, was very friendly and accommodating. They did run out of several sides but Michael offered some dipping sauces for our steak, for the inconvenience. The thick cut bacon was a great start to our meal which was followed by the special of the night, 36oz tomahawk ribeye. We finished the meal off with their bread pudding and a cup of coffee. Pretty good.
Just terrible execution. Food was average (ribeye- excellent- all else pedestrian). Wine list is incredibly weak. Service was less than non-attentive. Fire alarm went of during dinner due to kitchen fire (there was zero communication as to things under control or we should run for our lives). Honestly, just a mess. So many other great food options nearby.
Waiter was always in a hurry and could not be bothered to wait for our choices. Food was overpriced. Got quoted the wrong price on a special item. Very frustrating experience all round.
I was so incredibly disappointed in my crab cake it was all breadcrumbs. My salad was bitter and it was not because of the vinaigrette which was actually good. Overall it is too expensive for lunch and the wait for food is too long.
Food was delicious and we received great service. The bacon was awesome! We will definitely come back!
Brunch with friends
We had a fantastic experience! The steak was the best Atlanta had to offer, cocktails were perfectly crafted, and service was attentive and punctual. Thank you!
We sat at the bar and while the restaurant had a handful of there patrons, it was not full or super busy. The bartender wasn't unfriendly, just more disinterested. We had to get his attention to order drinks, food and ask for water - as opposed to him checking on us or asking us if we needed anything.
The food was okay. I had the pork schnitzel and it was a bit dry. The large, thick cut onions that sat on top of the schnitzel were nearly raw and not good. I love onions.
The salad and crab cake my friend ordered were good, as were the oysters and fries we had to start.
Overall, I was disappointed in the service and my meal but it could have just been an off night!
It’s my third time going to this restaurant, but the last time probably was a year ago. Anyways the server Ethan was not polite with us. Was always like in a rush don’t took the time to explain carefully about the options. I order the burger he said that is not available anymore so I did need some time to look the menu. We order drinks and when he bring to us he drop on the table my wife drink, did no say anything to apologize or clean the table. My steak I ordered medium well came well done.
After we finish my wife and I were talking trying to have at least a good conversation but he just Put the check on the table and we didn’t say that we’re about to leave.
Not a good experience at this time service wasn’t good and my food was not the way I ordered.
Ribeye and wine selection were perfection! Service was amazing.
Good place to eat but pricey. I like the Paul Hobbs Cabernet and fillet.
Previously, we had a closing dinner at The Federal with a table for six and it was a great experience.
Very good steak. Salmon was excellent. Not many salad choices but hey! It’s a steakhouse
The charcuterie board has a lovely selection for the price. The quantity is great as well! DO NOT MISS the bacon appetizer with the chimichurri. Seriously some of the best I’ve ever had. The Peachtree battle cocktail was perfectly sweet while still boozy.
I loved the restaurant and the server was awesome. We thought the food was over priced. We eat out a ton and felt like the prices were way too high for what you get.
Really tasty steakhouse fare, but in a spot that doesn't smack of "steakhouse chain". Great service and an awesome bar.
Unfortunately all four steaks were over cooked and under seasoned. For a $58 steak frites, this is not good. A Brussels sprout Caesar salad was underdressed, to the point I’m not sure the dressing was included. The charcuterie board was fine. Overall, very high prices for poor execution.
