We reserved a high tea following an afternoon at the Banksy Limitless exhibition and were really looking forward to coming to one of my favourite haunts in Sydney. We were seen by a waitress who took our order and asked which of the desserts we wanted. We ordered and a few minutes later she came back to let us know that the order was sold out and that we could order something else from the menu which we were then told was sold out. We tried another order, sold out. So we asked to see what options you did have that was on sale and ordered. The waitress then came back and told my son, that what he had ordered had sold out. We told her that this was a pretty disappointing experience and were told that maybe we should have turned up earlier... which made my wife pretty angry as we had booked to come in for afternoon tea, as advertised. My wife made this point to the server who was incredibly apologetic but by that time the experience had sourced so we ate and drank and left. I will return as I've been coming to Grounds for a long time and have never had this experience before. But worthwhile feeding back to you nonetheless.

Thank you for your feedback Alex. We’re truly sorry to hear that your afternoon tea visit did not live up to expectations. We sincerely apologize for cakes being unavailable during your booking. We understand how frustrating it must have been to make several selections only to be told they had sold out. We also regret the comment suggesting you should have arrived earlier, this is not the level of service we aim to provide. We’re grateful that you brought this to our attention, and your feedback will be shared with our team. We hope to have the opportunity to provide you and your family with the experience you know and expect from us next time. Kind Regards kishan/ Restaurant Manager

I chose this venue as I had visitors from overseas and thought it would be a nice central location to meet and catch up. For breakfast time, the music was far too loud!! I've been to quieter nightclubs.. It made it very difficult to have a normal conversation, which was disappointing. The food and service was fine, not exceptional by any stretch of the imagination.. expensive for what was served. It was also as if they had never seen a child before, let alone two toddlers. A warning for anyone with a weak pelvic floor/heavily pregnant: There are no toilets in the venue itself. Instead you need to walk to the back of the shopping centre, down the elevator and again walk for another few minutes - only to be met by a video intercom to access the parents' room... DO NOT recommend this venue if you are potty training your child, it meant my daughter peed herself trying to get to the bathroom on time. (Although, toddlers don't seem to be the target audience, to be fair!)

Thank you for your feedback Martina. We’re sorry to hear your experience didn’t meet expectations We understand that a comfortable atmosphere is important, and we’ll certainly review this. We completely understand your frustration regarding the restroom access. Unfortunately, as part of the shopping centre precinct, the bathroom facilities are managed externally and are not located within the venue itself. We’re grateful that you brought this to our attention, and your feedback will be shared with our team. We hope to have the opportunity to provide you and your family with the experience you know and expect from us next time. Thank you again for your honest feedback. We have visited The Grounds of the City a few times and previously had great experiences. Unfortunately, this visit was disappointing. While the ambience was still visually appealing, the space was extremely loud to the point where you had to raise your voice just to have a conversation. Service, although polite, felt very transactional, with a strong sense of being rushed to order, eat, and move on. The food was the biggest letdown. I ordered the beef burger, which was very dry and lacked flavour. When I asked for additional sauce, I was told there would be a $2 charge. After raising the issue with the manager and explaining how poor the burger was, I was told the sauce would be complimentary. However, when we went to pay, we were still charged for it. Overall, it was a frustrating and disappointing experience, and based on this visit, we would not return for lunch.

FAQs

Yes, The Grounds of the City is a stylish, atmospheric choice for date night thanks to its old‑world décor, cocktails and dinner menu. Expect a buzzy, intimate vibe (booths and candlelit styling) that many guests describe as romantic. Note that the room can be quite loud and tables are close together, so book a booth or an earlier/weekday booking if you want a quieter table.

Portions are generally generous for mains and share plates, the menu features hearty mains (steaks, roasted half chicken) and crowd‑friendly small plates meant for sharing. Several guests report large, shareable servings, though a number of diners feel some salads or plated items can seem small for the price. If you’re sharing, order a mix of small plates and a main to ensure everyone is satisfied.

Partly, families and groups do dine here and guests report celebrating birthdays and bringing teens, but seating is often tight. The venue favours two‑person booths and close table spacing, which can be cramped for strollers or large family groups. Outdoor/arcade seating is sometimes available and can be more comfortable. If accessibility or space for young children is important, call ahead to discuss seating options.

Warm, vintage and buzzy, the restaurant trades on an old‑world, European‑style atmosphere with stylised décor, candlelit tones and lively jazz/house music. Many guests love the vibe and call it "romantic" or "NYC‑like", though it can be quite loud when busy. Lighting is often dim and the space feels intimate and theatrical.

Casual dress is the recommended code. The venue is described as "Casual Elegant" by the owner, so smart casual attire is a comfortable and appropriate choice for breakfast, brunch or dinner.

Yes, guests report that staff often accommodate requests like early arrivals, seating preferences and holding a table for late arrivals. Many diners asked staff about dietary needs or celebrations; sometimes staff are proactive, other times you may need to call to confirm. For important requests (accessibility, birthday arrangements or strict dietary needs), phone ahead to ensure the team can help.

Not explicitly, but yes, the venue is very popular and does get queues and wait times at peak brunch and dinner periods. Many guests recommend booking to secure a table; walk‑ins can be asked to queue or wait, and some diners report being held in a pre-booking queue during busy times.

Weekdays (Tuesday–Thursday) are often the best choice for a more relaxed experience, fewer queues and lower noise levels. If you want the lively weekend atmosphere, book ahead for weekend brunch; otherwise pick a weekday morning or early evening for a calmer visit.

The Grounds of the City is the second outpost from the team behind The Grounds of Alexandria, it’s part of the same group that launched the original Grounds venue. The City site carries the same creative team and brand ethos.

Yes, it’s associated with The Grounds of Alexandria (the original site). Guests often compare the City venue to the Alexandria location and many say they visit both venues when in Sydney.

Yes, several guests mention outdoor/arcade seating as an option and say it can be quieter and more comfortable than the busy interior. If you prefer a less noisy table, request outdoor seating when you book.
