The Publican is a Medieval styled mecca of all things beer, pork, and oysters. If that's not appealing, you can't sit with us.
The food and service is always great at Publican. The bold rich flavors accompanied with a fun and energetic environment makes it one of the greatest restaurants in Chicago. They have something for everyone.
Everything was absolutely delicious. I highly recommend it.
We wanted a nice Sunday dining experience and The Publican fit the bill as they were open for brunch. The atmosphere was friendly and somewhat lively, but most importantly, the food was fresh and delicious. The pork shoulder entree and the bacon side were both outstanding. I would go back in a heartbeat if I lived closer.
When we first came to Chicago 4 years ago we ate here at the Publican all the time because it was delicious; then we went exploring other West Loop hot spots and dined around the city, as there are lots of great choices. But we came here for Mother's Day and the flavors were just terrific; fish was some of the best we've ever had (and we're West Coast originals - we grew up with fresh fish everything) and we just love the Chicago vibe and of course what they're able to do with pork. So Father's Day brunch for me was a terrific treat - I think we ordered about everything on the menu. It's just got such a great sense of place plus the flavors and cocktails - it's hard to turn away from all the other choices the city has, but the Publican has sort of stolen our hearts in many way. Thank you for all you do. We'll be back shortly.
Publicans a great place to be treated fine dining experience but with a casual atmosphere. And the service is five star.
Truly top-notch food, beer & service.
Amazing! Such creative, delicious, fresh, well- prepared food. Publica is a definite reason to visit the budding and very cool Fulton Market.
Consistently one of our favorites in Chicago. The food is always fantastic. We tried the beef tongue and it was so lovely and tender. Can't wait to go back, the menu is always changing with the seasons!
Nothing special honestly.
My wife and I in Chicago for business meetings. We went to this restaurant based on a recommendation from a friend who lives here. We really liked the place. Friendly staff, fun menu, we really enjoyed the food. You have to be open to a “family style” environment. Share your table and your plates! No individual entrees! But that’s a good thing!! We had the carrots, a few oysters, scallops, and the “choice of 3 hams”. Loved it all.
Not many appetizers. Food was not as seasoned as I would like.
This was possibly the best server experience I’ve had in a restaurant in a long time! The food was phenomenal and everything our server suggested and brought us was so complex, interesting and beautifully presented. I wanted to visit a restaurant while staying in Chicago that Anthony Bourdain had loved, and I can see why this was a favourite. Thank you for such a wonderful evening!
Dining at the Publican was a great experience! The food was so tasty. We started with oysters, had a starter that was essentialy berry meat jam on sourdough bread (OMG so good!) Followed by several mouth watering pork dishes. Bring good friends, and order to share! Highly recommend.
Oh and the Negroni's... perfection!
We went for brunch and shared quite a few different options. It was really great! The bacon is incredible, I highly recommend for anyone wanting to taste authentic bacon. The buttermilk fried chicken on top of grits was so beyond our expectations. The cilantro leaves a nice finishing taste. I definitely would recommend this restaurant. The location is in the heart of the fulton market district, which has a lot of great options. The inside is fun, we went for brunch so it was a little quiet but i love the look of the pig pens to sit in. The only thing I 'winced' at was the price of the coffee, which felt a little steep.
Food was very good but portions were very small and pricey. Noise level was extremely high and was difficult to have a conversation
The Publican is just great. The atmosphere is loud and exciting. You eat at either communal tables or in the pig pens along the wall. I would recommend the pig pens as you have your own space but I know lots of people enjoy the communal tables. Food is great. The belly pork is outstanding. Our server was entertaining and knowledgeable. A Chicago staple for sure. Highly recommended.
Anthony Bourdain was a huge inspiration to my brother and I. This was one of his favorite Chicago restaurants. When we found out he passed away we immediately booked dinner to pay our respects....just as he would have wanted - great people, great food, great drinks, great conversation
Everything was spectacular as always!
Fun, unusual place with excellent and unique food. We enjoyed being seated in one of the stalls as it helped to hear each other because it is a high spirited place.
Everything was awesome. Portions were larger than expected.
We ate at the Publican on a sunny, warm day, so chose an outdoor table. The indoor seating is communal and the room can get very loud, so outside was a good choice. It was a busy night, so the only negative was the service, which was a bit slow. That said, the meal was fantastic.
We started with the chef’s special oysters, which gave us each one oyster of each type on the menu that night. All were fresh and delicious...I think we could have eaten 2 dozen. We especially loved the grilled escarole salad. For the other 3 dishes, we had the halibut, expertly prepared, beef tongue that also was amazing. The third dish was a grilled carrot dish...wonderful!
Dinner was approximately $90 a person with drinks.
We would definitely return.
Second visit to publican, almost as good as the first.
We dine outside , it was delicious. We loved the octopus and the cookie jar.
Service was extremely slow from start to finish. Not sure if this is the norm or not but I think we waited over one hour for our food to be delivered..
Great spot. Food was excellent. Same for service. Hip neighborhood too.
Very disappointed in amount and quality of food. I make a better salad for
Much less money. Beatrix across the street would’ve been a better place for brunch
Publican is great food, as always. Brought guests from NYC. They liked it.
Staffs were friendly and table layout was unique but that was about it!
Very disappointed by the limited brunch menu. There was nothing healthy....
Only one cucumber salad was ok.
A sausage was coated by maple syrup, over sweet lemon cake came with too much jam and cream on top, hashed brown was so greasy. No fresh fruit for the waffles.
No latte or cappuccino.
I always have an enjoyable meal at The Publican. They are mindful of my allergies and service is impeccable.
We ordered a bunch of stuff for the table. The timing and order of everything was absolutely perfect. The quality and most importantly the quantity of everything was spot on as well. A lot of times with family style, there is not enough of every fish for everyone to get a decent taste. This was perfect. Publican has been and still is my top restaurant in Chicago.
Our meal at The Publican was simply outstanding. Each dish was exquisitely prepared and delicious. The standout dish was the Pork Shank. Three days later and we’re still talking about it! The service was attentive and our server made good suggestions throughout the meal. I don’t think that you could go wrong ordering any dish on the menu.
The food was excellent, the beer and wine list very good. It was a little difficult to get our servers attention, but the staff did a good job of brining the food out. I even liked the "communal" seating. The one downside (and it would keep me from returning) was the noise level. Very difficult to hear our server or carry on a conversation.
As always great food had 2dozens of chefs choice oysters..everything is fabulous.
Food and service were great. Want to come back for dinner!
Our family has dined at The Publican many times, a favorite restaurant in Chicago. The food at The Publican is consistently all of three things: fresh, flavorful and innovative. The service is helpful, and polite with just the right amount of suggestion. The resataurant is a little on the loud side, but the food is so good, the noice rarely bothers us!
Perfect. Loved every part of the experience. Thank you so much for one of the best meals we’ve had in a long time.
We had an excellent dinner both service and food was fantastic, would return again when visiting Chicago!
Probably the noisiest restaurant I have ever been to. Food and service was ok.
The top noise level in a Oktoberfest Bierzelt when the band is in full swing is much lower.
Nevertheless the restaurant was full - so check yourself, it might just be us...
Always a solid meal. Well prepared interesting and fresh foods
