The Walled Garden at Barton Grange
Diners can now relax over their meals in the conservatory, enjoy semi-private dining in the summer house – or even gather around the sink in the wash house, should they choose!
With prime farming land all around us and a host of specialist growers and producers making the most of it, we usually have access to plenty of fresh seasonal fruit and vegetables, as well as quality meats and cheeses. So while we can’t guarantee that every ingredient we use was raised on our doorstep, we certainly do our best to bring you the cream of the local crop.

Night before lockdown. Really quiet, and limited menu. But, attentive Service and a really well cooked steak
The Walled Garden, was perfect. We booked in for our anniversary, we were greeted by a friendly member of staff and shown to our seats very quickly. We received a complimentary glass of champagne each which was a lovely touch. All 3 courses were perfect, neither of us had any complaints. Loved coming back after we married here 2years ago in the hotel can't wait to come back again, 5*
Afternoon tea booked - brilliant service. However I was slightly disappointed with the variety of the savoury selection. Last time, there were little pies, quiches, more variety of sandwiches. I found this afternoon tea fairly basic for the price. Sorry. The sweet selection - the jelly wasn’t set but the rest of the deserts were delicious and full of little surprises.
Great food, slow service, although we were asked by every member of staff if we’d like a drink or had ordered food, no structure to the waiting staff. Nice varied menu with specials and good portion sizes. Big car park.
Not a big menu but a good variety. The food was delicious Tables set well apart. Will be visiting again.
Poor service, confusing waiters, but food quite tasty.
Fairly quiet Food average and waited about 35 mins to arrive . No one cleared plates nor asked if we wanted dessert.
Food was very nice however spoilt by poor service and not the best ambience!
Greek salad starter was excellent. Everyone enjoyed all theirs too. We had hotpot as main meal and that was perfect so thank you. Based on this experience we will definitely eat here again. Very friendly staff too.
Great service and lovely food. All customers well spaced out and social distancing measures in place.
Limited menu - service was good - drinks very expensive
Prices on the menu were incorrect and not honoured. We ended up having to pay about 15 more than menu price.
Staff acknowledged the menu was incorrect and still did not offer any solution.
Excellent quality food and great service.
We always have great quality food here and the value for what you get is good.
Fantastic service and very friendly staff.
I will certainly be back soon.
Great service, lovely food and staff were so welcoming. Clean and well presented restaurant
The menu selection was very limited, which was fair enough. We waited an hour for our starters and then a further 30 minutes for our main food. I would not of minded the wait if the food had of been of a good quality-very poor indeed, both were barely warm and the mash that came with the salmon was slimey and probably with the combination of being cold was unedible. The childrens food was warm. We would not return again due to the food.
I thought the pizza was exactly the same as a frozen Chicago town stuffed crust pizza and for £10 I think it was a bit expensive for a pizza of that kind. Furthermore my wife had the fish and chips and thought that the beer batter was very poor in taste . It would definitely put us off coming again also only offering beef for the roast special was a bit disappointing where most places offer at least usually 2 options
Excellent as always but we and the staff were totally puzzled as to why we had our booking changed from 6pm to 7pm We arrived at 5 30 to realise we had an email showing the change of time! We called in to the restaurant to ask if there was somewhere we could wait and they were as puzzled as us and served us at 6pm.
As this was our first meal out since lock down it was as expected a bit quite and the menu a bit limited but overall it was good.
Booked a table online for lunch. Received confirmation email. Drove 20 miles to be told the restaurant was closed. Very disappointing!
The Sunday dinner was the best I have every had - the beef simply melted in your mouth! Definitely recommend, staff were very helpful and friendly especially in these uncertain times
Friendly and helpful staff. Prompt service. Not rushed to dine. Good value for money. Lovely setting.
Popped in to sample the new lunch menu. Choice was A little limited but what we had was fine. Sadly the service remains slow with no clear system to ensure tables are looked after. Price was reasonable for lunch.
We arrived for lunch on Sunday and were shown to a sitting out area near the main bar until our table was ready. On finding that our table was ready we decided to go straight to the table. As the table appeared to be dark with not much light and close to a serving station we asked to be moved. We were eventually shown to a table in the corner of a small conservatory which was already occupied by a group of 8. Lots of chatter throughout our meal but they didn't annoy or upset us.
We thought the menu was rather light and could have done with a few more choices but we both had a starter salmon and soup, which were very good and both had pork for the main course followed by coffee as we couldn't honestly manage a dessert.
At around £40 for 2 it was good value for money. Throughout our time there the staff were absolutely excellent, very friendly and chatty and very keen to help.
We really enjoyed our early evening meal. The food was delicious and attractively presented.
Service was spot-on!!
Looking forward to using our gift token for afternoon tea at the same venue.
The starters and service was good the main course, burgers , where the worst ever. We sent them back and got a refund
We dined at The Walled Garden on a Sunday evening so the menu was limited to less than usual. I hadn't realised this when I booked. It was exceedingly quiet - just 2 others in from what we could see - very unlike the place I remembered from a few years ago when I last visited.
Hubby had the Parma Ham with Mozzarella and Rocket starter which he loved.
I ordered the Sea Bass served with new potatoes, runner beans and leeks - delicious - cooked to perfection. Hubby had the Mushroom risotto which he described as passable.
My dessert was a lemon and lime posset with sorbet and meringue. The meringue was lovely but the sorbet tasted of chemical and spoiled my appetite for the rest of the dessert. When we mentioned this to the waitress she said she'd let the chef know.
Had a very nice meal the other night with excellent quality food. My only complaint was that I had the set menu and was disappointed with the size of the main course. I went home hungry. My 2 friends chose from the normal menu and had good sized portions. Great staff and atmosphere.
Lovely Sunday lunch. Excellent roast beef, and a very good Yorkshire pudding. service was very good, attentive, without being overpowering.

An absolutely lovely venue to meet friends for a spot of tea. We were the first customers, so it was very quiet, which was nice; the only problem with this is that it was cold and we had to sit with our jackets on for the duration.
The food was lovely, catering for vegetarian and gluten free dishes, as we had one veggie and one GF, this was an absolute bonus. The food was lovely, I only had a sandwich but it was delicious and arrived with crisps and a wee side salad. The veggie pasta was also delicious.
The young lady who served us was delightful, professional and very friendly.
I would definitely eat here again and recommend to friends.
Thank you Enchanted for taking the time to share your review. We look forward to welcoming you back soon. Kind Regards, Theresa Miller Walled Garden Deputy Manager
Second visit to the Walled Garden. 4 of us had dinner before going on to the Flowerbowl cinema on a Sunday evening. We all had the Roast beef dinner with yorkshire pudding; excellently cooked and really delicious. Followed by passion fruit creme brûlée. Fantastic. Service was excellent and would highly recommend. Definitely going to go back.
Nothing special but perfectly acceptable. Staff were professional and polite.
Have been to The Walled Garden many times but not recently and always enjoyed it. This occasion it was not good. Booked a table for 6 via Open Table but on arrival it appeared that they did not have a booking. As the restaurant was nearly empty it was not a problem but still annoying. The food was ok but only warm not hot. The table was well appointed but the surface was very sticky so that it was not a good idea to place anything on it. The service was by quite young staff who probably need some training. The bottle of wine was put on the table without being opened or an offer to sample the wine. Also considering the restaurant was virtually empty it was hard to get drinks refilled etc.
Food was barely warm
Kale as a veg for your xmas dinner ????
Service none existent
Place empty on a Sunday tea time speaks volumes which begs the question “what’s happened to this place”. Used to be amazing in all aspects
Had a lovely catch-up lunch with two friends. The only thing lacking was atmosphere as it was a very quiet day - 12 December
The evening was acceptable but nothing exceptional.
Relatively quiet lunch time, so noise levels were OK. Helpful staff, delicious Christmas menu, and reasonably priced wine by the glass.
Unfortunately the Lancashire hotpot was undercooked and had to be returned. Although the staff were happy to offer an alternative it meant one of the party ate her main course on her own as the rest of us had finished when her replacement arrived she was embarrassed by this and did not enjoy the meal because of it. Staff did as much as they could to resolve the situation but the meal let the whole experience down
Service great and food lovely. Very pleasant atmosphere and nice staff. Been a few times, will go again soon.
The reason for not giving a five stars was due to the cups of cup being very tasteless. None of the party of four liked the blend of tea and at a later time we received two medium size teapots with only one teabag in each so that was even more wallow. We have same issue at the riverside restaurant of Barton grange further up the road. Would recommend a better quality of tea to match the standards of the food we received . Maybe Farriers of Kendal tea or even good old Yorkshire tea.
