About this restaurant

  • Neighborhood gem
  • Great for craft beers
  • Good for groups
Perhaps the Wooly concept is best represented by renowned Canadian artist Charlie Pachter’s Queen on a Moose” paintings. These pictures conveyed what would happen if a British pub was transferred to Canada. That pub would feature local foods, beverages and decor. It would be an All-Canadian pub featuring the best of the British pub culture. A local or home-base pub for its guests.

The Wooly was inspired by the Ontario micro-brewery explosion that occurred in the late 1980’s. The brewery industry was dominated by 3 large companies for over 40 years until the start of the craft brewery phenomenon. Teaching a course on beers at the University of Guelph Bob Desautels was keenly aware of this development. When an opportunity to open a pub in downtown Guelph emerged he decided to feature only small micro-brews on tap.

The rest is history!

My husband and I love the Wooley, but don't go as often as we would like due to the prices. The food is great, but for the portions vs. the price, it does deter us from going more often.

The wooly is wonderful. On the afternoon Good Friday it was full of families with young children searching for Easter treats. Delightful! I also ran into an old high school friend who I hadn’t seen in years. Highly recommend the Wooly experience!

FAQs

Yes, The Wooly Pub is a cozy, lively spot that works well for date night. Guests praise the warm, inviting atmosphere, live music some evenings, and a menu with shareable starters (Whipped Feta dip, fried Brussels sprouts) plus hearty mains. The front porch and covered back patio give options for a more intimate table, and the staff are described as attentive and knowledgeable about beer and food pairings. Consider booking for busy Friday nights or live-music evenings.

Portions are generally generous, many guests note large, satisfying servings and value for money. Several reviews call out "very large portions, " "more than enough, " and repeat visits for the hearty lunch and dinner items. While a few guests experienced inconsistent portions on isolated visits (e.g., a very small scoop of mashed potatoes), the consistent guest impression is that meals are filling and good value.

The Wooly’s posted hours are: Mon–Thu, Sun 11:30 am–12:00 am; Tue–Sat 11:30 am–10:00 pm (note: some sources list Fri–Sun open until 11:00 pm). Guests also report special events and holiday service, so if you’re planning a late visit or a holiday booking, calling ahead is a good idea.

Yes, The Wooly is family-friendly and offers accessible seating. Guests frequently mention families, children, and toddlers dining comfortably; staff are described as accommodating for celebrations and family needs. The back patio has an accessible ramp, and the venue can rearrange seating for larger family groups and special occasions.

It depends on your goal: for a quieter, relaxed meal try weekday lunch or early dinners, guests note lunchtime is brighter and calmer. If you want lively evenings, try Friday nights, trivia nights (Tuesday), live-music nights, or special events (Woolystock). For value, weekdays during happy hour (guests mention Mon–Fri 3–5 pm and late-night specials after 9 pm) offer good deals.

The Wooly occupies an old house with multiple seating areas: a front porch, several interior rooms (guests reference a front room and rooms near the kitchen), and a covered back patio with music/stage space. Staff can move parties to larger tables and they host private parties. If you prefer a particular room (patio, quieter interior), call ahead to request it.

Warm, lively, and characterful, guests consistently describe The Wooly as a welcoming neighbourhood pub with an old-house charm, strong local beer focus, and frequent live music. It can be noisy on busy nights or during events, but many guests enjoy the energetic, social vibe. The patio provides a relaxed outdoor feel when the weather’s nice.

Casual dress is appropriate, the owner lists the restaurant's dress code as Casual Dress, and guest photos and reviews show a relaxed, pub-style environment suitable for jeans, casual shirts, and weekend wear.

Yes, guests report that staff are helpful with celebrations and special touches (balloons, birthday gift cards, accommodating cake or seating needs). The Wooly hosts private parties and will often handle requests if you call ahead, for seating preferences, dietary needs, or celebration arrangements, phone the restaurant to confirm details.

Busiest: Friday evenings, weekends, nights with live music or special events (Woolystock) and trivia nights, guests report higher noise and slower service at peak times. Quietest: weekday lunches and earlier weekday evenings tend to be calmer and brighter, making them a good choice for a quieter meal.

It depends on what you want: for deals and value, Monday is popular (guests mention half-price wings and pints and happy-hour windows), while Tuesday trivia nights are great for a fun group outing. If you prefer live music and atmosphere, Friday or event nights are ideal. For a quieter experience, choose weekday lunch.

Yes, The Wooly accepts private parties and regularly accommodates large groups. Guests report successful birthday celebrations, large family gatherings with toddlers, and staff moving tables to fit parties. Contact the restaurant directly to discuss private-dining spaces, capacity, menus, and booking details.

Often yes, guests have enjoyed Good Friday fish dinners, Thanksgiving specials (e.g., Thanksgiving poutine), and New Year's Eve events, so The Wooly does operate on some public holidays or runs holiday programming. Hours may vary on holidays, so call ahead to confirm service and any special menus.

Yes, The Wooly has outdoor seating: guests reference a front porch and a covered back patio (new back patio praised), with patio heaters for cooler weather. The patio is popular for drinks, live music views, and relaxed dining. The back patio also has an accessible ramp.
