Dear Guests: République will be closed August 15 - early September for renovations. We plan to resume service the first week of September and will announce the date once it's known. République, located in mid-city, is owned by Chef Walter Manzke and Chef Margarita Manzke. Centered in the heart of Los Angeles, the classic building in which it resides was originally erected in 1929 by Charlie Chaplin, and later transformed into the iconic La Brea Bakery and Campanile Restaurant. République builds on this storied past, offering a gastronomic environment imbued with history and grandeur. The space features a casual bar and bistro in the front with a more formal dining area located in the rear, serving a French-inspired menu created daily by our Chefs.

    My wife and I celebrated our anniversary. Service was great, there was a cute letter provided by the restaurant congratulating us for our anniversary. A nice touch!!

    République is lauded as one of the best restaurants in Los Angeles, but based on a first visit it is not a great value and has shortcomings. The appetizers are very rich-- overly fried squash blossoms, for example-- and delayed to the point that the main courses arrive too late. The beef dish is very rich and smothered in a bed of mashed potatoes. It is truly worth $56 for four slices of nice beef? The menu is overpriced across the board. The cod entree is tasty, but sits in half a boullaibaise presentation that isn't very satisfying. Desserts were enjoyable at $15 a pop. If you want to dine our for two people for $300 in L.A. with one drink per person, Republique might be the place for you. At this price point, we expected much more in terms of food, service, presentation and ambience . . .

    The baguette with Normandy butter was great! We also had burrata, squash blossoms, tortellini, short rib, opera cake, tiramisu, pavlova, and mi-cuit. All were great but stand-outs were tortellini, short ribs, and the desserts.

    I think the attempt on new takes on dishes was commendable. Not always successful but still beautifully plated. Great service! Can’t say enough about the attentiveness of the staff. Strawberry tiramisu is the star of the show.

    Everything on the menu is consistently interesting, fresh, perfectly prepared and delicious. Even the salt is special. The service is also always first rate. Definitely one of the finest restaurants in LA.

    amazing dining experience. the staff was so kind to us, and seated us quickly. the timing, composition, and taste of all of the dishes were simply amazing. my favorites were the tuna and baguette starters, angelotti, and the chocolate mi-cuit (pazookie !).

    We love République. The food is always outstanding and the wine list is extensive. Our server may have been new because he didn’t seem well versed in the menu. As our dinner progressed he became scarce. Luckily the other server who brought us refills and utensils made up for it.

    This place is amazing, the food, the service, the environment you name it, we ordered strawberry Tiramisu when it came out we all said 'wow'. Only thing we didn't try was the wine since we needed to drive after the dinner. For one day trip in the area, if you have 2 hours for dinner, this is the place to go.

    We've been to Republique several times for dine in and we did a Christmas black truffle tasting menu as a takeout box at the height of the pandemic. On every previous occasion, the food has been fantastic and the service well-timed, unrushed and capable. Sadly, things seem to have changed since our last visit. Last night, we did their multi-course prix-fixe black truffle tasting 'experience' - it was definitely an experience, but not a good one. We arrived a few minutes early for an 8:15pm reservation. They were running late. After 20 minutes of waiting outside, we decided to grab a drink at the bar. We were seated 5 -10 minutes later. By 9:15 (an HOUR after we'd planned to have dinner) we'd still had no food other than an unremarkable truffle croquette amuse bouche and no wine other than what we'd ordered at the bar. Eventually, I asked the waitress what was going on and she said they were waiting on the sommeliers. After that, she must have reminded them we were there because the next two dishes of truffle panna cotta and bread with truffle butter came out right away, as did the wine. Both dishes were tasty, the bread great as always. About 3 minutes after the panna cotta arrived, the first person came to check we were done and tried to grab my partner's half eaten panna cotta off the table. We explained we hadn't finished. Thirty seconds later, the next person appeared to check if we'd finished. By their third attempt, we had actually finished. So by this point they'd managed to both rush us through our food and delay our dinner by an hour. Ugh. The next course of lobster & stracciatella salad with black truffle wasn't great - no real rationale to the dish - just some random bits of stuff with truffle on the plate. By this point, the timings seemed to work themselves out and food and wine actually arrived together. The rouget was the best dish of the night - great quality, flavour & presentation - exactly what we were expecting (hence the 2stars rather than 1).

    I made the reservation on open table and selected the front room and not high chair. The staff took us to the high chair in the common room. We ended up sitting high chair in the front room. Very disappointed !!! My wife has a leg injury recently. Why you ask me to select the seating choices and you can not deliver! I will be glad to talk to the management if they do care to discuss with me about my concern

    The meal started out incredible and then each dish kinda of got less enjoyable until our last course which we unfortunately had to send back. It was out first time coming for dinner at Republique, it has been on our radar forever and we have been for lunch and breakfast but never for dinner. We came on time for reservation but our table wasnt ready. It was supposed to be in the back room but it was in the middle room and the table was actually great view so not a problem. The celery cocktail truly one of my favorites in the city. The beef tartar was incredible, very special dish, we love the pan drippings too, what a great offering. The prawns were out we wanted to try those. The crudo was okay but the mango was bonkers good— delicate and packed with flavor. We had to wait a long time for the tortellini, about 20 minutes, a big gap in the meal. Our servers said they could have brought out the boudin, but we felt like that was the last dish... I think I wish they just curated the experience and didnt ask us. Maybe bring another dish etc... The truffle add on was great but the hazelnuts felt clunky for the dish, we kinda wish that was more integrated into the filling or something else... The casoluette was highly anticipated and recommended to us over the short rib. But unfortunately it was a bust, it came out very dry and very very salty. We never send food back but we did with this we couldnt eat it. The chef admitted it was not right. It was late in the night and felt like the attention to detail lacked. I love the ambiance and our waiter was truly a angel, accommodating and sent out an extra dessert. I feel like we just came at a bad time or something. I felt for the pedigree of Republique there should be no bad times! We will definitely come back but it was a bit of disappointment for our first time. We live in the neighborhood and we know the food is outstanding, so we will return!

    I love Republique. I have come many times but this time was awful. And to make matters worse, I had hyped it up to two new friends. We had a 8:30 PM reservation and wasn’t seated until close to 9 PM. If I wanted to eat at 9 PM I would’ve reserved that time. They kept saying the others in front of you are almost done. If they aren’t done, I would’ve been ok seated somewhere else instead of waiting for almost 30 minutes to be seated. Once seated our waiter was incredibly rude. We asked to hold on to the menu in case we wanted to add another app he tells us that kitchen is closing soon. We told him what happened and instead of saying ok I’ll make that work, he goes behind us and mocks her. To his dismay, I could see him in the mirror. The manager that night was amazing. Not sure if pur server was having a bad night but just an poor experience. Food wasn’t as up to par as usual but that could be due to the fact we were a little upset. I hope next time things are better. Grammar and spelling may be horrific but like the service that day, nobody is perfect.

    wowwwww!!!!! Wow wow wow!!! The most amazing meal and service I've had in a very long time. Blown away. My best friend and I went to celebrate my promotion at work and we felt like we were the most important people in the room. Obviously we know we're not, but they made us feel that way! From the hostesses, to our server Gabriella, to the bartender Jason, the GM, the wine sommelier, the bussers, and the runners, everyone was so wonderful, so professional, polite, and knowledgeable! Their hospitality was on point!!! We were checked on often, new plates for every course, great suggestions. They even gave me a sweet congratulations card. The food was like nothing I've ever had. So delicious and beautiful. I can't wait to go back. The music was sooooo my jam too. Thank you for the best celebration night ever. It was a dream

    The food is even better than I remembered from pre-pandemic, and it was fantastic back then. Waitstaff is friendly and attentive, even though most have only been there a month or so. Baguette + butter so good it hurts to think about. Only possible criticism is their outdoor area lacks the charm of all the other restaurants that have transitioned outdoors. But that's about a .03 out of 100 – go now!

    I made a patio reservation once I know we’ll be visiting LA, but didn’t anticipate the traffic so we were 1/2 hour late for our dinner reservation. We called multiple times to the restaurant and no one picks up until the time of our reservation at 6pm. Over the phone, we were told that we’ll need to return the table by 7:30pm, and we agreed. When we arrived at 6:30pm, we then told that we won’t be able to fully experience our meal in an hour and offered us the bar at the stools which I declined as we travelled all day, and prefer something comfortable. The hostess lead then gave us a patio table and the hostess reminded us that we’ll need to return the table by 8pm. Our server greeted us quickly, and gave recommendations on ordering, we quickly ordered and told our server that we’ll want to order dessert after. She recommended us to order one dish from each course to share, and so we did. The baguette was nicely warm and fluffy with room temperature butter and flaky salt, very delightful or we were just very hungry. 🤣🤷‍♀️ The heirloom tomato with burrata was refreshing and juicy, absolutely delicious! The squash bloom tempura with stuff goat cheese was light and unique as I never had squash bloom before, the pairing of the two different dips compliment the stuff goat cheese well. The duck confit was delicious and portion was good to share. Duck skin was perfectly crisp, except there were a few hair sticking out, so I had to cut that out. That put me off a bit, but the jus saved the dish for me. The meat was a tad dry to my liking, I guess confit with such crispy skin, it’s quite difficult to achieve crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. Overall, the food was amazingly declines, we enjoyed every bite. However, the pacing and service was a little bit disappointing to me. The server only came to us twice during our first three courses, and when we almost finished our 4th course, she then came over and told us that we could stay as long as we like.

    Delicious food. We chose this restaurant as a pre-theater meal. The Manxke’s are true creative geniuses. Our waitress, Olivia was exceptional. We only gave lower ambiance points due to the patio dining situation. It still feels like a Converted parking lot rather than a lovely garden. Every bite was a dream, the baguette with Normandy butter and fleyr de sel, the steak tartare with an unctuous Dijon ice cream was revolutionary, my husband favored the Campanelle pasta with generous tender bites of lobster and we closed with fries and a melt-in-your-mouth short rib. I highly recommend this awesome restaurant.
