Birthday dinner. This is a favorite place for us. Been here at least 15 times over the years. Some favorite items still on the menu. Interesting specials. My meal wasn’t as good as some I’ve had here, but that was mostly the choice I made, not the quality or the preparation of the food. They gave the birthday boy a comp dessert without our knowing beforehand; very nice touch! Will still recommend this place to others. Will continue to come back.
A perfect evening of delicious food and lovely wine in a quiet sophisticated setting with good friends.
The meals were delicious and our server was welcoming. The ambiance was calm and elegant without being stuffy.
We have been to Stained Glass a few times, and it always gives us a wonderful meal and rewarding experience. This was a birthday celebration for my wife and we were comped a dessert after dinner! Before that were starters of cream of spinach soup (amazingly creamy and buttery!) and deviled egg (three of them with a salmon mousse...unique!) My wife had the special, Steak Oscar: a generous filet with lobster topping! I've never seen that preparation anywhere. She said it was wonderful (by my taste as well,) and provided leftover beef for our Bichon, Stan, who ate it even faster! I had my favorite entree, Tuna! Tuna! Tuna! prepared as a tartare, a pastrami and a sashimi. Fantastic! Our server, Joe was top notch, and overall service excellent. There are multiple dining areas; we were in the bar area with bare brick wall which is classic and homey. Food was priced moderately but wines were expensive. We just loved it!
Lovely atmosphere, perfect for our anniversary celebration, fantastic service, allowing us to linger over drinks, unrushed, but timed servings perfectly, on a quiet street, wonderful new find
Excellent food. I had the whitefish.
White tablecloths greet you as you are escorted to your table for your high-end dining experience. The night that we were at The Stained Glass was on the quiet side (which fit the bill perfectly since we had flown in from big cities in the Northeast that are known as foodie cities for a funeral the following morning). Both my cousin and I ordered the tomato basil soup (an evening special) that was quite delicious with a slightly robust flavor. Our main entrees were the steak frites and the duck that both of us truly enjoyed after our long day. We found the restaurant to be an oasis and we hope that you do too!
A very lovely place for a good dinner. Elegant but not overdone. Service was very good and the food delicious. Very nice too for a special occasion.
It was my husband’s birthday. It was the perfect place to celebrate. We ordered based on the server’s suggestions and everything was so delicious and the courses were timed perfectly. We will definitely be going back.
Everything was wonderful. It was a great dining experience!!
My son ordered a steak from the kids’ menu, which was quite misshapen: very thick cut and curled up onto itself on the edges. He only managed to get through half of it, though he said it tasted all right.
My husband found the whitefish entree quite disappointing, and I thought the same of the salmon salad entree. The salmon fillet was overly large and unimaginatively cooked, while the salad was a very basic mix of greens piled high, with cherry tomatoes dotted about the plate. Very inappropriate for dinner, though it could probably pass muster at lunch.
I also tried the shaved brussel sprouts, and found that salad to be a bit on the dry side.
While our server was nice, she didn’t advise me on the entrees very well. I ended up with far too many salads, really. I would probably have changed my order had I known what the salmon entree looked like, and would have appreciated a little forewarning from her, given that the menu description itself was quite terse.
The bus person clearing and delivering our food plates wasn’t exactly well groomed, and managed to make me uncomfortable enough to want to leave as quickly as possible.
I don’t normally write detailed reviews like this, but given the price point, the ambience, and the location, I think the restaurant fell short of expectations.
Very quaint quiet restaurant with impressive staff. Large salads (order one for two people) Scallops were bad and had to send them back and was handled very well.
Celebrating our 5 year anniversary.
My wife and I celebrated a special occasion on a Saturday evening. The room is attractive and a wine-focused bar runs along half its length. The room was not particularly noisy, although not full either. We enjoyed two flights of wine between the two of us; plenty to share and an opportunity to taste 6 selections total. The menu leans French and was very inventive; the whitefish over wild-mushroom spaetzle was surprisingly substantial, perfectly cooked. My wife's tuna trio also was excellent and cleverly served on a set of matching plates. French silk tart was a perfect finish. Our server Barbara provide terrific service, never intrusive yet fully attentive. We will be back!
First time here. Very nice experience. Had the sparkling wine flight. Server was GREAT (Barbara). For was really good except the shrimp on the salmon special. Pretty sure it was not gulf shrimp and had an off taste. But all was good otherwise including dessert (pecan tart).
We had a variety of dishes amongst five of us - steak, lamb and scallops. All of them were delicious and cooked exactly as requested. Our waitperson was attentive but not intrusive and very helpful with explanations about the food and wine selections. We would definitely eat here again!
We went on a Sunday evening (7:00) and the crowds had all left. It was quiet and comfortable. Our server was pleasant and attentive. We felt the food was excellent and we shared the Brussels Sprouts salad and a desert.
The experience would have been so much better if the tables we spaced further apart!
Nice quiet restaurant with good food/drinks, ambiance and outstanding service. Celebrating our anniversary so we wanted to so to a restaurant that we don’t always go to – so went to Stained Glass. We shared: Tenderloin Steak Tartare – Shallots, Dijon mustard, cornichons, field greens, sriracha aioli, grilled toast points. Delicious and glad we shared. Entrees: The Mr. had Australian Rack of Lamb – Parmesan and white truffle Creme brûlée, Hollandaise, haricots verts, mint pesto. I had: Seared Diver Scallops -Pan seared diver scallops, Parmesan herb risotto, haricot verts and saffron beurre blanc.
Since they knew we were celebrating our anniversary, the waitress brought out the dessert menu and choose anything you want, one the house. So we decided to share one dessert: Creme Brulee Sampler – Grand Marnier, mocha, Vietnamese cinnamon. Everything was delicious including the drinks and the glass of white wine that the Mr. enjoyed.
Everybody was so nice, the food was delicious and we had a wonderful time!
While the service and food were good, we had an unfortunate experience with a gift receipt which we received from our daughter several years ago. We told the waitress that we had a gift receipt before we ordered. When we got our bill and presented the gift receipt, we were told we must have a gift card. We had a receipt showing that she had paid $75.00. Our daughter who lives out of town never got a card from the restaurant. The manager refused to honor the receipt. After a discussion he came back and charged us for half of our dinner. There is no excuse for not honoring our gift receipt. We will not return.
I first visited The Stained Glass last year with a friend who, sadly, has since died. I was there again over the weekend with my wife and several family members. We has a WONDERFUL dinner -- perfect in every way.
The salad/appetizer course were superb -- especially the shaved Brussel sprouts salad.
The entrees were great, with special praise for the duck, the whitefish, and the scallops.
Desserts were awesome, with the warm pecan tart w/saboyan gelato leading the pack.
Service was attentive, and all the fine details were also perfect.
We'll definitely be back!
An off night. Been there plenty, but the service was horrible. Our apps got there before our beverage. Server disappeared. She was PLENTY nice, but BAD.
We went there for a friend’s birthday and had a wonderful time! The food was terrific and the service was great.
Excellent food, service and ambiance. We have been coming for years like that the wait staff is stable and knowledgeable.
Our favorite spot in Evanston did not disappoint. Wonderful food expertly prepared. BLT and pecan tart were stand outs. Avoid the silk tart which was soggy and flavorless.
Excellent food in a well-run establishment. Creative menu items with gluten free and vegan options. Best choice in Evanston for a business dinner.
Crabcake was disappointing for the price. Tasted like lots of breadcrumbs, very little crabmeat.
Had rack of lamb. Tasty n tender but presentation was not up to level for level of restaurant. Food runner not properly trained to put plate on table properly. I had expected better service for a nice restaurant.
Our server Joe was very nice.
It’s clear that this a place that cares about food. And the service was wonderful too.
Food good, women bad!!
Excellent meal for our 21st wedding anniversary. Starter course, the Brussels sprouts was interesting but raw shredded sprouts are a little hard to adjust to when you are used to cooked sprouts. Our main courses, the whitefish and the scallops, were excellent, especially the risotto that came as a bed for the scallops. Desert of three different types of crime brûlée was also great. I had asked that two glasses of. Hampagne be on the table when we were seated. They were. Lovely meal and very nice setting.
Good service. Food was tasty & arrived timely. Enjoyed the crab cake..could have used a bit more sauce which was quite tasty. Disappointed when my husband ordered a Southern Comfort manhattan they did not have Southern Comfort. The scallots and whitefish were both good. Creme bruele sampler didn't live up to our expectations.
Wonderful meals. Fish perfectly cooked. Delicious French wine. My only disappointment was where we were seated. We had specifically asked for a quiet table to celebrate a anniversary. 6:30 reservation so there were many tables to choose from. Next thing we know there was a party of 20 being seated in the room directly behind my chair and the patrons spilling out of the room standing practically on top of our table and I am getting elbowed and knocked in the head with purses. Very hard to hear each other so it really spoiled the romantic mood we had in the beginning.
Mother’s Day brunch
My wife did not care for the chili special. Our 2 top table was too close to a loud 4 top, so they were distracting to our conversation.
Menus was a little contrived & very rich
Service was warm ,friendly & attentive
We were greeted with graciousness and felt appreciated
The dinner was good and service was great. Just too much noise from the next (large) party.
Our favorite place to dine! Kevin and his staff are the best! Everything is delicious, and the wine flights are amazing. Whether you stop by the bar for a drink and appetizers, and settle in for a lovely dinner in the beautiful dining room, you'll have a wonderful experience.
Good food. Attentive but slow service. Waiter could not keep the order straight and forgot several things. Noisy
The steak and the chicken were excellent, As was the brussels sprouts salad. One of the best restaurants in downtown Evanston. Worth a visit.
