Bar food, elevated. Great sweet potato fries. Decent cocktails. No gluten free buns or bread. No changing table in the washroom. Friendly, efficient staff.
The chicken quesadillas were decent, a plentiful portion, though the guacamole portion was small and the “sour cream” didn’t taste like real sour cream. I ordered a cocktail from the limited list of offerings, and it didn’t have a particularly vivid flavor. The decor is appealing—cozy, barrel-shaped booths, lots of wood, and some decorative book-lined shelves. All in all, a typical college town venue, more about atmosphere & fun (they host a trivia night) than the best food or even the best drinks.
My first time trying Beyond Meat and it was excellent. Service was prompt but not intrusive.
Food was amazing as always. The service wasn’t great, we had to wait a while to be greeted and for our server to return to our table, but she was nice.
The drinks, food, and atmosphere were good, but the staff was OUTSTANDING! Very accommodating and attentive service. We had a reservation that started out as 3 people that unexpectedly went to 11 after a business conference. The staff was more than accommodating and still got us sat at our original reservation time. Thank you, Whiskey Thief!
The go to place for burgers and poutine! Our group of 5 had a great lunch and service was very professional.
Went on a Friday evening, relatively early (6:15). The restaurant was not at all full, so the noise level will probably increase when it's more crowded. I had a bison burger, which was very good (not as fatty as beef) with a side salad made from very fresh greens, though the dressing was too sweet. My wife had the chicken adobado and thought it was outstandingly delicious. There is an extensive list of wines, good selection of beers, and of course, whiskey.
Brunch was fine. Pancake ordered in the side was burnt. We sat in a barrel and it was too dark. Overall, I liked my omelette and I love their old-fashioneds.
This was my first visit to the Whiskey Thief and I was very impressed.
We had a great dinner, loved the atmosphere and had a great whiskey old fashioned!
Roasted chicken was juicy and seasoned well and I never order chicken when dining out since it’s usually dry. Also try the octopus with roasted potatoes. And save room for creme brûlée.
This place looked super cute and was looking forward to celebrating Father’s Day here. The place was busy but there were plenty of open tables so it wasn’t packed.
There was no one at the front and we waited a few minutes for the host to come up, which was fine. When he came up I told him I had a reservation and gave my name. He asked if we could wait a minute because it was really busy and he needed to set up our table. No problem. He disappeared to the back and we waited a minute. Host came back and directed us to the front table by the entrance that was open the entire time. Hahaha
Anyway, we got seated and looked over our menu. The waiter came over and took our order.
First issue: three out of the five of us ordered the same thing. Not until the third person ordered the same item did he mention that they were out of the breakfast potatoes the meal came with and we were all getting fries instead. My sister-in-law then asked for toast as a substitution. Server said no problem. Rushes off before anyone can add a drink order. Food comes and we place a drink order. My sister-in-law gets a side of fries that she didn’t ask for. Server says toast is on the way.
Second issue: everyone gets their drinks but me. I don’t receive my tea till I’m halfway done with my meal. My s.i.l. doesn’t get her toast till mid meal either.
We pretty much don’t see our server till the end of the meal when we ask for the check. Had to ask the host for boxes.
It seemed like it was maybe just the two of them working the floor? I’ll give them the benefit of the doubt, but for a holiday they should have had more servers. Probably won’t be back.
Great place to watch a game with plenty of TVs and very good food. We went for Father’s Day and the whole fam loved it.
Really loved Whiskey Thief. We were seated right away in the booth we requested. Megan took care of us for the night and she was attentive and super helpful when we were trying to decide what we wanted to eat and drink. Whiskey sours were delicious. We tried sourdough loaf, pimento cheese and wings for apps. They were all very good. For main dishes, the group had burgers, pulled pork and steak frites. Everyone loved their meal! Too full for dessert so will have to return soon and save room.
Noise level lower in the table alcoves than in the bar area seating.
Very poor service. Slow and unresponsive. Food order was incorrect. An entree was missing and the server never came to check upon arrival of the dishes. Took 30 minutes to let the server know that the item never arrived at which point we decided to cancel the salmon entree. Requested dessert menu at that point. Server did not return promptly so we didn’t order dessert either. Overall the worst experience in a restaurant that I have had in months.
Staff seems new? But friendly and attentive
I have been here a few times now for dinner/drinks and the food and service was always good. We went for Brunch and I am sad to say that the service was not up to par. Our waiter was very slow and when asked to bring other items to the table, disappeared for a long while. It was obvious that they were not staffed correctly for a Mothers day weekend brunch as there were only 2 waiters for the entire restaurant. Our free mimosas were slow to come around as well. not sure we will be back for brunch again
The food and service here are excellent. I like the variety of options and the house cocktail offerings are interesting and tasty. If you're looking for quiet conversation, reserve one of the booths. Otherwise, the open dining area can be very loud.
Good Evanston sports bar. The food is decent. Pretty loud but quieter in the back. They were very nice to my son who was taken there for his birthday, giving him a free dessert.
Birthday - great!
My husband and I love coming here for dinner and drinks. For dinner and drinks, I would give 4 stars across the board. But, this time we went for brunch with our kids. We were excited to try brunch here and enticed because kids eat free on Sundays. Although kids eat free, they don't drink free and kids drinks were overpriced in my opinion. Also, my husband did not care for his omelet and wished it would have come with toast and potatoes instead of only potatoes. My avocado toast was good, but not worth the price IMO. It would have been nice for the avocado toast to come with a side of potatoes or fruit instead of just the toast. I think the biggest turn off was the service. I had to ask for a refill of coffee when mine was practically empty and we had to wave down our waitress for our check after waiting awhile. Other servers seemed more attentive so it may have just been ours. We will be back for dinner and drinks but probably not for brunch.
Convenient location for all. Close to Metra and CTA. The drinks were outstanding. We will be back.
Food was delicious. Staff was very friendly and the hostess was able to accommodate our request to switch tables.
Good mixed drinks and food.
Very loud place. We had a group dinner of 8 people and you could barely hear each other over the background noise.
Whiskey Thief is our”go to” place. The menu is varied. The food is nicely cooked. The staff is friendly. And we love the cozy barrel-vaulted booths.
Food was so good. Vibrant atmosphere
Fun seeing the games there. We had a great waiter who was really attentive. Lots of fun.
Cozy & fun. Very good food. Even better on weeknights.
Great atmosphere and good food. Unique place for sure ;)
This was the first time there. We were pleasantly surprised by the ambience. We got a booth which is like a private area. We were able to see the NCAA games, but still had a very quiet area to have conversations with our friends. The meals were all great. The hanger steak and brussel sprouts were excellent. Their specialty Mule drink was very good. They did not have Bacardi rum.. they only had one brand which was not a good one, however. They honored our reservation and we did not have to wait at all to get to a table. The wait staff was very attentive and good. Prices were reasonable. We plan on going there again.
Great drinks, service and food. Was loud for our group of 5 to chat.
My food order was incorrect, the waiters response “people make mistakes”.
Place was a bit busy. Food good. A lot of drink option. Had to wait to get more water.
This is a restaurant that has been cleverly built-out. There are booths around the edges and interesting hightops between the central bar and the surrounding boots. This however is unfortunately the highlight of this restaurant. I asked for Gray Goose vodka on the rocks, and was presented with the smallest cocktail ever seen in my life and had the pleasure of paying $11 for such. I was jaw dropped. It is hard to describe how small this drink was.
The food menu is somewhat limited, but in a way this is good. I ordered a burger and it did arrive it was as advertised. However, the french fries were completely cold and the burger was only warm. One has to assume that it had been sitting on the delivery counter for some time.
The service was interesting. It appeared for the entire restaurant there was a single waitress. While I'm in my 60s, my wife in her 50s and my mother-in-law in her 80s... She was simply shouting at us all the time as if we were deaf and stupid. I can assure you I/We are neither. She would take in order and then just disappear and then I'll show up as if she was the cats-meow. But in the meantime we would simply wait. Now I know this is not McDonald's, but there is a reasonable waiting period and one that's unreasonable.
It is definitely more suited to the 18- to 25-year olds but it is not for everyone. For someone who's been to nearly every reasonable (not fast foot or discount noodles) restaurant in the Northshore, this has to be closer to the very bottom of the range. Poor service, cheapest pour on the Northshore for booze, average to maybe below average food.
It is an establishment I would never recommend in an million years unless you're in the recommended age group and have some decent ID. It's a shame, I believe they spent quite a lot of money on the buildout of the interior, but they'll never hit their third anniversary unless they make significant structural changes to the way they operate as a restaurant.
Great ambiance in a cool speak easy style setting. Loved the private booth, delicious cocktails and huge burgers!
Second time I’ve been here with the same friend. Love the whiskey bar concept and the decor. The menu is interesting, more choices than bar food, and we like the crab deviled eggs. Really appreciated getting the booth this time for conversation, and not being chased out after dinner while we talked for a good while more. Will definitely be back.
Love the place. Good food. Very good beer and whiskey selection. Staff are friendly. Would definitely recommend to my friends.
Darling place, a bit loud but they accommodated us with a table away from some noise and we greatly appreciated that as my husband has hearing aids
