Food was good but the service was significantly lacking.
Great food and great service went for the weekend dim sum brunch! And the crab wontons, California roll, barbecue pork buns, and crispy chicken and dumplings! Their sweet-and-sour sauce is especially good. Very nice server
Totally OUTSTANDING in every way!
The four in our party found all our dishes to be quite bland. While seafood and vegetables were fresh, seasoning was absent. Overall, a rather disappointing experience.
Tasty asian food, excellent service, pleasant ambiance
We are regulars at Koi - - our favorite Chinese restaurant in town - - and want to mention a special shout out to our server John and the manager Charlene for making our most recent visit - - a birthday celebration - - especially nice. We really appreciate the hospitality and excellent food.
The server was not attentive and the food was subpar. The manager was very helpful but it could not make up for a disappointing dining experience.
Service was absolutely outstanding. Our server was attentive and helpful.
One of our favorites. With six hearty eaters, we ordered four entrees and two appetizers and still took home some food.
First time. Poor server, unknowledgeable of dim sum menu. Wanted crunchy noodles, whereas was told they weren’t on the dim sum menu. However, table next to us, enjoying a plate full of crunchy noodles. Next, we were told you were out of pork ribs on the dim sum menu. Following that, we were told the long rolls people had ordered off the dim sum menu were like Mexican churros and that our soup choice was not on the dim sum menu. Wrong again. Because two tables ordered soup and rolls, no sugar, and were dipping them in the soup, along with their dim sum choices.
Finally, our first experience poor and perhaps had we had a more knowledgeable server we might have returned for lunch.
Upscale Chinese restaurant with good selection of food
Excellent meal, will be back soon.
Receives changed have been going there for years and the chef left
They are searching for a new one.
Hello Steven im so sorry to hear you didn't enjoyed you dining experience at Koi. our chef didn't change, but yes, one of the line cook has left us last month. I would love to invite you back as my guest. please kindly email me at sandy@koievanston. to arrange. sandy chen owner
The Chinese portion of the menu was fairly tasteless and very, very inauthentic, despite claiming to be from various regions of China. I’ve lived in China and eaten in those regions, and the food has little connection to what is claimed (and no connection to the Chinese dish names on the menu). The sushi was better but nothing special.
Waiter seemed annoyed that only one person ordered a cocktail, and it went downhill from there! He was reluctant to answer questions on sushi ingredients.
Most of our food was very good, but the whole snapper had clearly been in the fryer for too long and was over cooked. Unfortunately, our waiter never came by to check, so there was no opportunity to correct it. Check was dropped on table without being requested. We were never offered dessert.
Noise volume was uncomfortably loud, but it always is. We knew that going in!
We’ve never been disappointed in Koi before. Will try again and request a different server.
Excellent dim sum! Service was friendly and attentive. We will definitely return.
The food was good and the menu extensive. There is a dim sum menu available on the weekends. The value lunches: bento boxes, combo meals etc, are only available for lunch on weekdays. High ceilings and no sound baffling makes the room very loud when full.
Thank you for visiting Koi and sharing about your experience! It is through your support that we have been lucky enough to serve the North Shore community for the past decade and voted the BEST Chinese and Sushi Restaurant in North Shore Chicago 2018! We are so grateful to have such loyal, local customers, as well as friendly, new visitors, and we look forward to continue to serve Evanston for many more years to come! See you soon,
Suhsi orders were backed up for at least 20 minutes and this was all that we ordered besides shrimp dumplings.
I had reserved a table ahead of our visit using OT and requested seating for a party of 4 near the windows. Instead we were shoved into a dark area near an (nonfunctional) fireplace which was loud and in the path of ALL of the servers and patrons in this room.
Have been a patron of the restaurant for over 10 years, this was most disappointing as we had family from Sweden with us and had trouble hearing each other over all of the noise.
Would definitely recommend Koi for Sushi. Other asian dishes.. not so much. The mu shu beef was pretty flavorless, but the sashimi was delicious!
We had 8 family members including 3 kids two of which have but allergies. The staff was wonderful and we felt cared for and safe. And the food was - tasty!!!
Great food. Choices between Japanese, Chinese and Thai dishes.
Dinner with the wife
We had a wonderful dinner at Koi after seeing a play.
We were so happy to get a reservation for 5 people as it fills up quickly on a Saturday evening. I should’ve taken pictures of the food because it was beautifully
Presented. I hadn’t been to Koi for a while but will definitely return soon. It really was delicious.
Great menu and service. Wine list could use some improvement but otherwise really fun experience
Casually elegant atmosphere provides delightful environment to enjoy superbly prepared meals from an unusually extensive menu. Service is attentive and friendly. It can get noisy if the room is full and the background music is playing (rather loudly), but at times when the room isn't jammed, conversation is easy. This is a restaurant that is definitely worth multiple visits.
Best Chinese food on North Shore. I’m not a sushi fan so I can’t comment
The food and service were outstanding. The Sesame Combination was especially delicious.
Good food, decent waitress, hostess did not greet us saying good by.
The food is consistently good here. Our waiter, thin and bald, seemed to be very put out by our requests and he was never around when we needed him!!!!! We come here quite often. We will make sure NEVER to have him serve us again!!!!!
Great service, but very loud. Hard to talk at a table for four.
I liked the variety of on the lunch menu but my order was incorrect initially.
Was evident that the waitress was new and so did not know the menu extensively. However manager was right there to jump in a help whenever needed. Place is trying a little too hard to be fancy in my opinion but the food is good, people are friendly. Happy hour deals if you sit at the bar are FANTASTIC!
We have been here dozens of times, and loved it every time... until this visit.
First, I’ll say the food was as delicious as always. But that’s only part of what keeps you coming back.
The young waitress was obviously new as she forget our wine order, seemed overwhelmed at her job and we had to ask for the check and a to-go container 4 times.
The music was uncharacteristically loud for Koi. Other patrons and even our busboy said so, wonder why it took so long for them to lower it.
Was it horrible? No. But if this was our first time it would have been our last
Lovely Mother's Day dim sum brunch
We came for mothers day dim sum brunch and had a really miserable experience. We ordered two items immediately and then some more when the server came with our drinks. We then waited for over half an hour as people who came after us were served. Then some of the food came out, but not all of it. Some of the food was OK (not great) but the short ribs were so tough and rubbery they were inedible. When the first food we ordered finally came out after everything else, the manager apologized and said it would be complimentary. The service was not good--the room seemed understaffed and our multiple dirty plates remained too long on the table. I'm not normally one to register complaints but this was a real bummer (it was my mothers' day treat). I've had some less than satisfactory meals with you recently, but this is the breaking point. It's such a shame, the room is lovely, the location is great. This could be my go-to location if the food and service were palatable. Your food was great when you first opened 15-20 years ago. What happened?
We have dined at this restaurant many times. Our reservation times are always honored on time, with little to no wait time. I usually get the roasted duck on the bone - I love the way they prepare this meal, and coupled with the steamed bok choy side, it is an excellent meal at a reasonable price. The plum sauce which comes with the order is an excellent addition to the crispy skin and rich taste of the duck meat. At our last visit, we also ordered the walnut chicken. It was also excellent. The steamed edamame side is always a good choice for an appetizer. This past visit, the restaurant was extremely busy on a Saturday night, just before Mother’s Day. The drink service was slower than usual, and we had a to wait a long time for our drinks to be served and the side order of California Roll to arrive to our table. But, other than these two isolated issues, the service was attentive and the food was excellent, and despite the crowd, the noise level was not obtrusive.
Food was excellent & Joh’s Service & suggestions were top notch!
Sushi was ok, service was fair, had 3 different servers helping and the host, not sure why. A tad too much truffle oil on one of the sushi specials. Octopus salad was enough to share between 2 people. Spider roll was good!
Great maki and dim sum. Attentive service. Whole front opens up in nice weather like today. Great place.
We took a friend there for lunch. The food was excellent as was the service. We could actually hear each other, which is not easy for my >70 year old ears. We will be back.
