Had a lovely bday dinner here. Great view from the terrace and the staff is great. My short rib was a little on the dry side but aside from that it was delicious

About the restaurant

Puerto Escondido
About the restaurant
Kakurega Omakase is an intimate dining experience on the coast of Oaxaca, where Japanese haute cuisine meets the richness of the Pacific. This omakase features a daily-changing 8-course menu, based on fresh, sustainable seafood sourced from local fishermen and divers.

Led by Japanese chef Keisuke Harada, each dinner becomes a ritual of trust, creativity, and respect for the ingredients. There is no à la carte menu—only what the sea provides and the chef imagines.

Designed by TAX Arquitectura (Alberto Kalach), the space blends brick, concrete, charred wood, and a traditional Oaxacan palapa, creating an open, wall-free environment where nature is part of the experience. Ideal for those seeking Japanese restaurants in Oaxaca, chef-driven cuisine, and fresh ingredients from the Mexican Pacific. Kakurega Omakase is more than a meal—it’s a culinary destination where Japan and Oaxaca meet in every bite.

Set in a locale hard beat, with the sounds of birds and the ocean waves crashing in the distance, eating at Kakurega so close to our stay at Casa Tiny down the road, was lovely and memorable. Having eaten a lot of Omakase in many places I'd say this stacks up at 4 stars for the area and expectations: the offerings were unique to the area (sailfish, some traditional Oaxaxan touches) and the knowledge of their materials was evident. The lighting was SO low at the point of viewing the plated food you cannot quite see your meals and how pretty they likely are. So if you're a foodie with the desire to document, good luck to you. Otherwise, if you're lucky enough to stay or encounter this private strip of land off the ocean and score a seating, Kakurega must be a stop on your path.

I had to choose between Pitiona and Los Danzantes. I ended up choosing Pitiona because they didn't require a credit card deposit at the time of reservation. I came here to celebrate my cousin's 60th birthday. It was absolutely perfect: elegant, excellent customer service, refreshing drinks, and an extremely delicious dinner. I got the fish, my cousin got the chicken mole, my husband got the tuna with risotto, and my cousin's wife got steak. The chef sent us a complimentary seafood soup (in a little cup); it was super tasty. Everything we ate was DREAMY. We will visit them again if we go back to the historic center of Oaxaca. If I could give it more stars I would. DELICIOSO!
