Overrated, overcrowded, and extremely noisy.
Also we had an inexperienced server who rushed us with everything and was hard to find when needed.
It was a disaster, it was so loud we could not hear each other sitting across the table. We left as fast as we could...
Food and service are great as always, but jeez Louise.. we were there on a Wednesday evening and the music was blaring. It was like trying to eat dinner in a club in Chicago.
Food might seem pricey, but you really do get what you pay for with sushi. No complaints there.
All in all a good meal, just wish it wasn't so crazy loud there.
Amazing food and amazing service. We had to wait for our food for a bit and it wasn't a big deal at all. Our server brought us a mango and white chocolate sherbet dessert on the house. It was an exceptional dessert and much appreciated. We will be back!!
Came to Shakou for a date night with the bf. We started off with drinks and edamame. The edamame was a generous portion, hot and lightly salted. We split 3 specialty rolls - 1) the rainbow, 2) flaming himachi, and 3) ocean drive. The flaming himachi was slightly fishy, but the other two rolls were perfectly fresh and delicious. Our server was attentive and friendly. The interior of the restaurant reminds me of something downtown Chicago rather than Libertyville, which I enjoyed. One thing to note is that if you enjoy a louder scene and EDM, this place is great. However, if you're in the mood for a more quiet, romantic date night, this might not be your best option. Overall, I give Shakou 4 out of 5 and would definitely return.
The food is top notch as always! Best sushi! The noise level could be less.....gets annoying when trying to have conversations, especially with a slightly larger group. So they could definitely turn the music down and still get the same energetic feel.
Music was too loud for easy conversation at the table. Food was mostly good but we were really disappointed that several rolls had avocado that was super unripe. Service was excellent. She brought our order out a few selections at a time and we never felt rushed.
We normally love Shakou, but on this Mother's day, we had reservations. We arrived and there was miscommunication and confusion on seating folks with reservations. It was not handled well, and honestly, it was a bit frustrating after 15 minutes - we left. We will return. The food is always good - this day was just a little too busy and chaotic.
Excellent food, service and cocktails. Everything was exceptional.
I have to agree with the other reviewer. Mother's Day was very chaotic. We had reservations and were told we could have a high top in the bar or sit upstairs. We decided to sit upstairs where we were seated at a couch and a bench. Would have been very awkward to eat on our laps, so I went back down to the hostess and asked if we could wait for a table downstairs. She said it would be an hour and I said but I have reservations and there were tables upstairs open that we were not seated at. She said your reservation gets you a table not a specific one. We sat at the high top in the bar and were so glad we did. Our server was outstanding and made up for everything.
The 3 of us liked it again. We all liked the food, and the music wasn't too loud this time. We had good seating, but the service was slow. Still worth the wait.
Great food and service. Have been many times for the Sushi. Can be very loud on weekends but the food is worth it!
This was our second visit here. The high top tables are in the bar area which has more of a club type of atmosphere and is very loud. The regular tables are away from the bar and are more conversation friendly. The food and service is consistently good. They are very busy so reservations are recommended.
Perfect as usual. One factor in our decision to move to Libertyville. A
I was there once before for a company Christmas party. This is the first as a personal visit and it was a good visit.
First time at the restaurant. Great food. Fun vibe. Service was fine, but could have been a slightly more attentive when it came to bussing table and refilling water. Will definately be back again!
6 if us seated @ a table meant for 4...were moved when we complained...will not provide separate checks for couples ...food fair...wine pour very short...very LOUD...club music
Shakou is a pretty great experience; The sushi is outstanding, and they have some really creative rolls, too. It's a hip and trendy atmosphere; you'd think you're at a restaurant in Chicago and not in L-ville. But, it has it's drawbacks on a Saturday night---the music was a little too loud making it difficult to hear conversations and to even hear the waiter. The music had a dance/club vibe to it. I don't recall the music being as loud the few other times I have been there. Regrettably, we had a second round of sushi, and it took an unusually long time to get the second order...like maybe close to 20 minutes. Our waiter seemed a little indifferent to our table, but he was spot on with our orders and was good to check on us for drinks. I look forward to my next visit to Shakou, but I probably will want to go at a quieter time during the week.
Love the food. Service is great. Ambience looks very trendy. But the music level is just crazy. I get you want a hip feel. But when you can’t have a conversation across the table because the music is so loud, it makes it hard to enjoy. Maybe turn it down a notch to keep the groove without losing the enjoyment of the experience.
The food was great
This used to be my favorite restaurant. Now, it's gone the way of a teenager screeching their tires to appear cool, while yelling "Hey babe!" out of their dad's old TransAM.
If there was an option for "unnecessarily loud and obnoxious" noise level, I would have selected it. What is easily $100+ dinner for 2 (before the tip) was completely ruined by the loud thumping music that was so loud, you had to yell your order-- at 6pm in a semi-crowded (not full) room. When we asked about it, the staff could only say that the owner was in and he won't turn it down. This is obviously something that happens often, as witnessed on our night. There are multiple requests and each gets met with the EXACT response.
This is an absolute shame bc the food is outstanding, the service is phenomenal, and the actual restaurant looks beautiful. I typically visit there at least 3 if not 5 times a month and easily spend $150+.
If you go, make sure you call and ask if the owner will be first. If he's there, I'd pick another night or bring earplugs. That is, if you want to hear anything else but ringing in your ears for the rest of the night.
Overall my experience was good, however our reservations were at 4:45pm , we arrived on time and were seated on time, the problem was I felt very rushed through the entire meal and if felt a bit uncomfortable it was like they needed to get rid of us for the later evening seatings
The food was great and there were plenty of gluten free options that can sometimes be hard to find at a Japanese restaurant. I know they are going for a trendy city atmosphere in the suburbs, but the music is a little loud for conversations. If the music were a little quieter I would have given a 5 star overall.
Amazing foo, ambiance, and service!
music tooooo loud
First of all, we were not welcomed with a “hi or hello”, the two girls in the front just stared at us and we had to approach them that we had a reservation. I SPECIFICALLY requested booth seats and when we got there this girl gave us the most uncomfortable seats that was away from everything. I tried to tell her we requested a booth table 2weeks before the day and she said “we have a lot of people coming tonight so you can’t get a booth.” After she said that, we were sitting and most of those booths had nobody sitting in them. We got done eating and nobody were still sitting in most of the booth seats. Our server was fine but he kept checking in on us (so much that we got uncomfortable) and we personally felt like we were so rushed. This was my second time going there and both events were unpleasant. The food was okay but the workers(most) are rude. Never going back.
Pink Cadillac roll and spicy tuna roll and ceviche were fabulous. Very fresh generous portions. Good value. Fun place for a date.
Good but not great. Went Saturday night and it was jumping. Hard to get staff service for anything since they seemed too busy.
I like Shakou, its an unexpected surprise in Libertyville. I am spoiled with my job as I am a meeting planner and stay at 5-star hotels all over the States.
Great service and very knowledgeable staff but the portions of sushi are unusually large and so that should be mentioned (I was entertaining someone from England too)- so two people that have a soup and then sushi do not need 3 difference sushi dishes, maybe share 1 or 2 - that should be mentioned to folks and the sushi is large but great, they do a fabulous job with it.
Unfortunately we were sat in the bar area and it was great until the next table had 3 loud girls that kept jumping off their chairs to take pics, not the restaurants fault but brushing against the table and stuff was very annoying.....been there numerous times, always good.
Quality food but slightly overpriced
I chose the most expensive items on the menu. Otherwise I think this place is overpriced and overrated. Although for that part of the country I guess it is OK. I prefer a more quiet atmosphere to dine in. The background music reminds one of being in the Caribbean resort. Just loud boom-boom music. Something soothing would be more appropriate.
It has some good Asian fusion type of foods. New and updated décor.
Food is exceptional as always. Music is so loud, so it's nice to get up near the windows in a booth so it's easier to have a conversation.
Another fun visit to one of our favorite local venues. Excellent, drinks, food and environment - great vibe to celebrate a special occasion (birthday in our case). Always top notch!
I recently had my birthday dinner at Shakou (Libertyville) with my family & they were fantastic! First of all, my boyfriend needed to be accommodated to a lower seating (we were initially assigned the higher chairs) due to his recent surgery and they were very flexible in ensuring us a table. Our waiter answered all of our questions regarding the menu and provided suggestions based on our taste. The food arrived promptly and it the taste was spectacular--definitely will recommend for any sort of occasion!
The food is crazy amazing and the price is so reasonable
Great food, nice atmosphere
My biggest complaint is the tables are too small! Five of us at a table that could be setup for six left no room for drinks, water, dining plates/utensils and food. Sharing was very hard in cramped quarters. Music is too loud so I don't think iot is a good location for a date, intimate conversation. or a business meal. The food is very good. Plenty of good choices for every appetite. They did accommodate my request for a main floor seating and food restriction.
Service was attentive but maybe a little more time between courses. There is parking with handicap accessibility behind the restaurant.
Amazing as always!
Great food and atmosphere
This was our first time here and we were very impressed! The hosts and waitress were very friendly and accommodating and the food was fantastic. Arguably the best sushi and miso soup we've ever had.
