What Insiders Are Saying
It's summer year round at Summer House Santa Monica. Don your finest Lululemon and chambray in an upscale dining environment.
Multiple dishes were dirty. Food had to be sent back and they just reheated / overbooked our meal.
I usually find the food at Summer House great. It is such a cute spot, and I enjoy going here to meet up with friends. However on friday, the scallop dish, which was a special for the night, was awful. It was extremely fishy and tasted as if the scallops went bad. The texture of the side did not compliment the scallops either. Very disappointed.
Love the fish tacos! And English muffins to take home.
We have been to Summer House several times and are well aware of what a pleasant experience it is. However, the suburban friends we met had never been there before and it was much fun to see how they enjoyed it.
My one criticism is how loud it was on Thursday from 1-3:30. I don't know what you can do about that, but
hope you try something! It was better for the last hour...
The service was warm & patron-focused. Server offered to split dishes, attentive and quick. Created a warm and welcoming atmosphere, which was needed & appreciated.
Summer house is such a cute restaurant. My girlfriends and I went out for dinner and we will be coming back! Cute, refreshing cocktails and awesome salads!
I enjoy Summer House so much, it is one of my favorite restaurants and at a reasonable price point! I love introducing my friends and family to this restaurant. As usual the service was impeccable and so was the food. I brought my partner here for the first time for a date and he ended up loving it!
I have been to Summer House many times and I was disappointed with my recent experience. The food was over priced ($30 for fish tacos??), the bread was stale, the waitress and hostess both seemed annoyed with normal requests (more ketchup/table away from the door due to the cold, and there were about 30 open tables). Overall, I was very underwhelmed with the food and experience, as were my two companions.
One of the best in the lettuce entertain you chain.
Loved this place. Great food and great ambiance. Loved the tuna and watermelon tostada, the avocado toast and the Brussels sprouts.
Great, bright atmosphere for the cold, gloomy Chicago winters
The atmosphere is nice and energetic. The menu has a lot of good options and there is a nice selection of wines. However, 3 of the 4 entrees we were served were cold! We were disappointed and will not be back.
I can’t wait to return, I haven’t eaten my way through the menu yet!
Service was great. Ambiance was wonderful. Wine list limited. Food was outstanding!
Good restaurant but what I got for brunch ( Mexican hash) wasn’t my favorite.
Always excellent. It’s the neighborhood place where I can always trust I will have a great meal and a great glass of wine
Everything was great once we were seated but it was pretty frustrating that we weren’t actually seating until 20 min after our reservation time.
Great meal. Only downside our reservation was for 7:30 and we had to wait for over 30 mins for our table.
Like all Lettuce restaurants, this one is consistent and of higher quality. Every dish we had was well-prepared (particularly the fish, which is hard to do correctly) and tasted good. Yet I just can't seem to work up any enthusiasm for this restaurant, much as I should be able to given the decency of the food. I think the problem for me lies in the room. It's airy and open, yet so crowded so that we were continually moving our chairs so people could get by. The chairs are wood or rattan, yet there was no sense of warmth or coziness or welcome to the room at all. More than any Lettuce restaurant I've been in, this felt the most like a chain. The room has all the faux charm of an Appleby's. I understand that the concept is "light and airy California", but the concept happens to be located in Chicago, Illinois which has cool weather 3 months of the year and damn freezing at least two. Light and airy only goes so far. And it's not that the heat wasn't on. It was and no one appeared chilly (everyone around us had their coats off and hanging on the back of chairs... where they were continually being accidentally dropped to the floor by people trying to squeeze by to get to their table or the bathroom.) It's just that no server seemed glad to see us, no hostess happy we showed up, no chair or table was designed to make us feel like we could stay a million years. OK so the food came out fast and tasted fine (if not particularly interesting), but - I can name a dozen other places where that happens that also seem much more welcoming (including other Lettuce places.) So, I've tried Summerhouse. Not bad, but not special. There's no compelling reason to go back.
Menu is a bit limited. Service was outstanding--attentive server without being intrusive or pushy.
Everything about our evening was fantastic. Great service, attentive wait staff and food was amazing! Was visiting Chicago with a group of friends and will definitely be back.
Amazing service , delicious food !! I will be back !
The restaurant is bright and open, you can truly see the sky. It is attached to a bakery and pizzeria, but I didn’t really notice it while in Summer House. We had a booth at the back of the restaurant so it was quiet and private. The food is fresh and delicious. We had the buratta appetizer and the fish tacos and both were wonderful. The drinks and wine choices are nice but a bit pricey.
Perfect ambiance for a business lunch! Extraordinary service, delicious food, and a light atmosphere made for a great experience.
With a reservation, we waited 25 minutes for our table. Not even a hello for another 15 minutes and when we got our food it was cold. I was trying to show off how great this place but it was kind of embarrassing. The rosé and the main dining room were nice but they discontinued their famous French toast! :(
While the space is great and gives you the kind of ambiance you’d like to linger in, the food leaves something to be desired. Despite making sure to say I like my poached eggs extra runny (because I’ve had a bad poach here before), they came out with super hard yolks. I then asked for another side of eggs, properly poached, and they arrived just as hard. I finally just gave up. The English muffins tasted stale and were hard to cut through and the hash browns were totally cold. I’m not sure I’d come back for anything other than drinks.
Food was good, not the best. As a Californian who leans towards vegetarian, I was disappointed with the liberal amount of butter in my dish (Mexican Hash Browns) that I wasn’t expecting. Our server was delightful and the atmosphere pretty but exceptionally noisy.
Breakfast with my best friend whom I hadn’t seen in a while.
Summer House never disappoints. Great food, service, ambiance. Had the Pork Chop special this last visit and it was super tender and flavorful. Plenty for my wife and I to share. Overall, Great spot for any occasion.
All three of us ordered fish. We ordered three different menu items and all thought ours must be the best!
The food was excellent. Great kids menu. Service was satisfactory.
We have been here many times and sometimes the noise level is prohibitive but this visit was a late lunch on a Thursday when it was calm and very conversation friendly. Our server Stacy was so sweet and attentive, a beautiful and welcoming smile. The food was great. You can always count on LEYE restaurants. Why can’t all kitchens get it right like Lettice does?
Good service. Flexibility was appreciated when customer was delayed 15 minutes.
Cool decor and excellent service but overpriced and very noisy. Food is nothing exceptional—especially for the price.
New favorite restaurant! Was like I was back home in California.
Great food and perfect atmosphere
Before attending Steppenwolf Theatre, we always stop at Sunmer House Santa Monica. Great food & very friendly service. Nice collection of Cali wines and a fabulous bakery for a cookie-to-go!
Waitress was very nice and accommodating. I invited a group of friends and some arrived late but she was very understanding and always came back to check on us and gave us enough time to order. I asked my friends to be bridesmaids and she was very excited and happy to take pictures for us and even took a Polaroid even though she was not familiar with it. I wish I could remember her name but thank you!
It was my birthday. We had a party of 4, which one of our friends was about 10 minutes late at the most. But the table next to us (party of 2) were seated, ordered their food, received their food - all before our server even took our drink order. Also, I never got my cookie for my birthday even though it was in the notes and my friend asked the hostess before I got there.
Everything was very good. Had the Brussels sprouts salad which I always love. Didn’t have any dessert as I’m cutting down on sugar but if I had of course it would have been a 5 star review as their desserts cookies and omg Rice Krispie treats are ah-mazing. Salads are always delish!
