Tar & Roses
With our heart beating in Southern California, we want to create a welcoming ambiance for all to come and celebrate food. Jonathan Gold of the Los Angeles Times, claimed that Tar & Roses "...may also mark the first time in our nation's history when cauliflower became more delicious than prime steak," and we love to push the limits when it comes to traditional ideas of food. With our rotating selection of local craft beer and our ever-changing menu, there is always something new and exciting to try.
When you step into Tar & Roses, you'll feel like you are coming home. We invite you to come share a meal with us.
What Insiders Are Saying
Tar and Roses exudes a classy calmness not often seen in this part of town.
Incredible food that was fresh, innovative and incredible! Service was excellent.
Awesome as always! The food and wine are top notch. $80 per person (tax and tip included) for a bottle of wine and fully satisfied stomachs. Not bad for a nice meal out in Los Angeles!!
Loved the food, service, ambiance. Started with Oxtail dumplings and yellowtail crudo-both fantastic. The yellowtail with white soy, citrus and jalapeño flavors blew us away. Just delicious combos. Next was hanger steak and asparagus-delicious. Steak was perfectly cooked and very flavorful. The asparagus was wonderfully finished with a soft egg across the top, the pancetta made a perfect pairing. Completed the meal by sharing the sunflower-choke pear soup with Gorgonzola crouton, topped with pears sautéed in brown sugar and thyme. Fabulous end to a flavor-filled meal. Oh my goodness! Dessert, was divine, strawberry ricotta crostata with honeycomb ice cream. The serving sizes are perfectly sized, did not leave feeling stuffed. Service was excellent, they were on top of table clearing and providing new plates and utensils. Wine choices were the bow that tied it all together. Looking forward to a return visit!
It has been a number of years since I've been here but I was very happy to be returning. The service was exceptional and the food was wonderful, except the eggplant, which was too salty! Everything else was divine.
So glad we tried Tar and Roses a second time (we'd tried it a few years ago and were less impressed). The food was great, the service lovely and while the music was a little on the loud side, all in all it was a must-go-back-to restaurant for us.
This place became my favorite restaurant at once! Food is very creative and delicious, and staffs are very nice and thoughtful. Maybe servers were too eager to brings the empty plates back to the kitchen, but other than that, it is a great place, however they do not have cocktails, which is little bit of disappointment.
Always a wonderful experience. My new favorite. Food is delicious service top notch.
My second visit to Tar & Roses and once again it delivered! Excellent food and service, the only minor complaint is we were seated in the worse table in the restaurant - right next to the toilets. It wasn't such an issue but not ideal.
Tar & Roses has a unique small plate menu that never fails to satisfy. We have never had a bad dish, and many have become our favorites so it often feels like we are ordering the same items on every visit. If I had to make just one recommendation it would be to save room for the strawberry ricotta crostata off the dessert menu.
We had one of the best meals we can remember the other evening at Tar & Roses. The waiter was extremely helpful recommending snacks to share, each of which were delicious. The main event was the red snapper cooked in a light batter with a special dipping sauce which was unlike anything we’d ever eaten and which was spectacular. The dessert was also yummy. I highly recommend Tar & Roses to anyone in or visiting Santa Monica.
excellent chef andrew and johnny!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Fantastic food and service. Noise level was challenging, however.
Excellent food and service. A bit loud but would highly recommend. Everything was delicious!
All the food was excellent.
My husband and I had a fabulous meal at Tar and Roses last weekend for my birthday. Our lovely server was had really great recommendations and pointed us down a really fun path to taste some really great dishes. Being first time diners at this restaurant, we weren't sure about the portion sizes but she made it sound like we should order quite a few and share. We took her recommendations and ordered up. Here's what we had: an incredible bottle of Remelluri Reserva Tempranillo/Rioja from Spain, a charcuterie board with 5 items, oxtail dumplings, wood roasted english peas, octopus skewers, another bottle of wine this time the Lopez de Heredia (delicious but not as good as the prior selection), wood roasted sun chokes, lemon ricotta gnocchi and the hanger steak entree. This was Too. Much. Food. for two guests. While I appreciate the excitement of each dish (they each were absolutely wonderful) this was an insane amount of food to suggest for a party of two. We did tell her that we loved to eat, but holy moly. Then came dessert.
Excellent restaurant. Very friendly staff. The back room is significantly quieter than the front enabling easy conversation. Cheese plated was wonderful. Several cheeses to choose from. I had the Duck w/ cherries Fabulous. Spaghetti carbonara also wonderful. This is a must for us when in LA.
Everything was amazing! Delicious food! Very nice and professional people. We really enjoyed our time and will definitely come back and bring our friends!💐💐💐
One of my fave restaurants. The food was excellent. It is best to do shared plates. I’m glad that the menu occasionally changes. Flavors are always on point. I love this place and would recommend! Wine and beer only.
Food was good but not great and it was an expensive dinner for two. The best dish was the strawberry crostata. Chicken liver mousse was good, but the $16 price tag was excessive for the thin spread of mousse . Lamb tartare was a hodgepodge of flavors . Carbonara was OK . Ditto sunchoke- pear soup, but the meal was all over the board. Server was solicitous, but may have guided us to throw too many things together. Very nice wine list
As always the food was great.
Great service. Good wine Syrah made by the chef.
I've been here twice and both times, it's been one of my favorite dining experiences. The services is impeccable and every morsel is delicious.
Had a delicious dinner! Food was excellent and service was perfect, our waitress was so wonderful and did not oversell us on our meal and had the dishes come out in the perfect order. Dessert was also delicious. We will be back.
Truly a wonderful experience. Delicious food, attentive service and knowledgeable staff. Our wine was chosen by the very capable Jonah behind the bar and he listened to what we liked and nailed a bottle of delicious Spanish white. Standout dishes - the Chicken Liver Paté - served with tart berries and perfectly toasted bread... The Duck was exemplary, the venison as well. Main courses are priced extremely well considering they can be shared. We had nearly an entire venison loin and a healthy duck breast. Thank you for a memorable night.
I will always come back for the oxtail dumplings
Excellent food and service. Best dining experience in a long time.
First time, with my love. Experience was wonderful
Fantastic and inventive food. Noise level was too high to be a pleasant dinning experience
Carly was amazing. The staff were friendly and welcoming, the service was outstanding and there aren’t really words to describe the food...you just have to experience it. We will be returning. Thank you Tar and Roses for a beautiful evening!
The menu was varied, innovative and a crowd pleaser. I ordered the light and fluffy ricotta gnocchi with English peas (great pairing), the bone marrow (a little too fatty, onion jam was good-not spectacular), and the sunchoke soup with gorgonzola crostini (soup was light and not overly creamed and crostini was a great size and delicious). My friend ordered the branzino which was also good but I was quite full. The wine list also has something for everyone. I think this is a great restaurant for tapas and that its worth a try!
Always tasty. Good for groups or date night. Try the gnocchi and the cauliflower. Incredible music playlist as well!
Food was amazing. Octopus and yellow fin crudo were outstanding. Branzino very good. It was a birthday dinner but no complimentary desert for the celebrant 🙁
Food and service was very good, However, it was crowded and terribly noisy on a Sunday night. My husband and I couldn't talk to each other and some of the servers had trouble communicating above the noise and hearing what we said. However good the food, I wouldn't go back and wouldn't recommend it to others, unless, of course, they don't care about the noise.
Food was delicious! Our server Joelly was wonderful. She made the dining experience even more fantastic!
Everything was delicious. Our server was hilarious. Only thing I wish was there to be a full bar.
Tar & Roses has amazing food: we had the oxtail dumplings, miso glazed eggplant, sun choke and pear soup,
rib-eye for two and, for dessert, strawberry crostini with honeycomb ice cream. I'd recommend everything we ate. If I had to pick a "least favorite," it'd be the eggplant, which was still fantastic. I forgot that T&R doesn't have cocktails, but we found a great bottle of wine. It made for a great evening.
(We arrived early and while there was no space at the bar, the maitre'd managed to miraculously seat us early. Appreciated.)
The food is delicious and the staff is friendly. We loved our meal! The host was super nice & funny.
The food was amazing. We ordered several things I normally wouldn't have based on the recommendations from the waitress. She nailed it. The venison loin & oxtail dumplings were both incredible.
Memorable food & great service.
Unbelievable!! The food, the service, the ambience, everything about this restaurant was perfection! We celebrated my moms 60th and it exceeded all expectation. Thank you!
Best food I've eaten in LA in a long time. All four dishes were over the top delicious. Lots of inventive flavors and textures in every dish.
