Chris Shepherd likes a challenge. He frequently tells people that he opened Underbelly five years ago “the hardest way possible” as a whole animal restaurant working directly with farmers. So when he & his business partners, Kevin Floyd, Whitney Mercilus & Steve Flippo, were approached about the possibility of taking over the building at 1658 Westheimer for only five years, his first response was to walk away. “But then I started thinking about all the ideas I’ve had in my head about my next concept,” said Chris. “I know it’s unconventional, but I realized this short-term lease could give me the freedom to execute all the concepts I want to do.” And so One Fifth was born. One Fifth is Chris’s five-year project featuring five different restaurant concepts. Each concept will be open Sept. 1 until July 31 & will close each August for renovations. The building décor will change, the menu & wine list will change, staff uniforms will change.

    We always enjoy our meal at Dish Society - almost always sitting at the same table! We are GF and there are lots of tasty options, although I always go with the stuffed sweet potato and my husband always enjoys the shrimp & grits. A wonderful evening.

    We have eaten here before but this was perhaps even a better experience than in the past. The food and prices were really good and the service was top notch. We really appreciated that just 5 minutes before the kitchen closed, and technically the overall closing time, we were able to order a bottle of bubbly (we were there for an anniversary) and they accommodated us with no complaint. They even let us sit as long as we needed to complete our toast and drinks as they began to clean up for the end of the day. This is so unlike some other places we have been where they start to push you out at closing. Our only minor complaint was related to lighting. We sat outside, which was great, but the lights could not be dimmed which led to too bright a setting as nighttime darkness came along. Hopefully they will address that.
