Located in Portland's Old Port District, Fore Street opened in June, 1996. The interior surrounds a unique brick and soapstone hearth with a wood-burning oven, grill and turnspit; visible from most tables. We believe that good food travels the shortest possible distance between the farm and the table. Our menu changes every day and is founded upon the very best raw materials from a community of Maine farmers, fisherman, foragers and cheese makers. Most of the Maine foods are organically grown or harvested wild, each brought to us at the peak of its season. In 2002 and again in 2007, Fore Street was named by Gourmet Magazine as one of the Top Fifty Restaurants in the United States. In 2004, Chef-Partner Sam Hayward was named Best Chef: Northeast by the James Beard Foundation.

Bread & friends has flown under the radar, but it deserves 5 stars for one of the best meals in Portland. Thoughtful, beautifully prepared, precisely cooked, delicious dishes. Genuine, warm staff who are psyched to share their phenomenal food. We can’t wait to go back!

We had a wonderful meal - shared 2 "chef specials" and 4 appetizers between 4 of us. While the menu may look a bit limited when you first see it, the food is outstanding and the portions were fully adequate for the 4 of us. Stefan was a great waiter - just the right amount of attention and he had all the knowledge we needed about our food and wine choices. Highly encourage you to try it if you haven't yet.

One of the best meals we've had in a long time!! We were lucky to sit at the bar overlooking the chefs making our dishes!!! Great guys who welcomed questions about the ingredients and were masters at making and plating the dishes. Fantastic presentation, and the flavors were excellent. We started with the Fougasse, a wonderful warm pretzel-shaped bread, followed by the black olive crisps, caviar and creme fraiche, a really delight! Small plates of marinated mushrooms with egg yolk, and then the jambon de Bayonne were just right. Our easily shared "Vol-au-Vent" with scallops and mushrooms (and tiny turnips!) in a puff pastry was a joy to watch the chefs build and then plate and it was warm and delicious reminder of what my "maman" used to make. Very friendly waitstaff and super vibe in a small bistro/wine bar. A small venue but a very intimate, warm, vibrant and friendly scene. A must for anyone looking for some authentic French dishes and experiences. And the cocktails (the "Au Go-Go) were referring and fantastic too!!
