Pellegrino 2000 is a cosy neighbourhood trattoria open daily from 5 pm until late. This intimate yet lively hotspot makes for a great date night – from the exquisite food and wine menus to the cosy, low-lit tables, everything positively whispers romance. The menu focuses on creating a small selection of dishes prepared to perfection. Start with twice-cooked octopus served with butter beans, nduja and egg yolk, or a roast pepper salad with anchovies and a tomato vinaigrette. The scallop and prawn ravioli with tarragon is a must-try main, as is the Scotch fillet steak tagliata and the vegetarian zucchini and basil lasagne. Not only some of the best pasta in Sydney, but also excellent hospitality and a great ambience – so good that Taylor Swift and her entourage chose it as a place to dine just last year.

A wine haven with an extensive menu of vino by the glass, Devine Food & Wine also offers some of the best pasta in Sydney, crafted by artisans. The award-winning wine list features over 500 curated bottles, of which at least 40 are available to order by the glass, featuring a range of natural wine producers and European grape varietals. The food menu brings modern techniques to classic Italian recipes made from Australian ingredients. The house-made pasta is the star of the show – try pappardelle with pancetta and beef ragu, ravioli with ricotta and truffle or spaghetti with pesto and pine nuts. The menu also features a range of small plates (cicchetti) and mains (secondi) – think seared scallops with chilli or Wagyu skewers to start, followed by Wollemi duck breast with saison amaro jus. Pull up a seat at the bar, or sink into a luxurious banquette, and enjoy.

We were very grateful for the restaurant as they decided to still keep our booking even though it was the last day before they shut down temporarily for renovations. Regardless of them dealing with a lot, we were served with great fresh food and they made sure to accomodate us as much as possible! Everything was super delicious

Neptune’s Grotto has the underground vibe that the name suggests – low-lit and intimate, with exposed brick walls and gentle Italian music playing in the background. This quirky basement restaurant is a hotspot for everything from a cosy date night to group events, with a series of banquet menus for larger parties. The a la carte menu offers a series of antipasti and entrees, from buffalo mozzarella with smoked and salted anchovies to chicken liver crostini and schmaltz to poached veal girello with a smoked eel mayonnaise. Follow this up with some of the best pasta in Sydney – try the egg yolk tagliatelle with pork and veal ragu or the pumpkin and ricotta agnolotti with truffle cream and hazelnut – or classic Italian mains such as cotoletta alla Milanese or eggplant parmigiana. We recently booked for Saturday lunch at Bill & Toni’s Italian, and it was a fantastic experience. The food was exceptional and truly faultless, very traditional Italian cooking done right. Our kids absolutely loved it, and every dish we ordered was delicious. The portions were so generous that we were completely full and unfortunately had to miss dessert this time, but that just gives us another reason to come back! We’ll definitely be returning to try more of the menu, including the desserts. The prices were incredibly reasonable and refreshingly traditional, offering great value for the quality and quantity of food served. In fact, our family enjoyed the experience so much that we were tempted to drive back the very next day. The service was very good overall. The gentlemen on staff were especially friendly, welcoming and always smiling. The female staff were polite and efficient as well, and perhaps a little more warmth would make the experience even better, but it certainly didn’t take away from what was otherwise a wonderful visit. Overall, a fantastic family dining experience with amazing food, generous portions, excellent value and a traditional atmosphere. We can’t wait to come back and try the desserts next time!

Simple yet stylish with a genuine Italian trattoria vibe, La Botte D’Oro has been serving up some of the best pasta in Sydney since 1977 – just like Nonna makes. Traditional Italian flavours are at the heart of the menu, with just a touch of modern inspiration. Think black mussels in garlic, chilli and white wine with freshly baked bread, pappardelle with lamb leg, slow-cooked with rosemary and garlic, and fried eggplant parmigiana with a rich tomato sugo. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays, up to two kids under 12 per table can eat for free when the adults order a main, while Fridays and Saturdays feature bottomless brunch between noon and 4 pm. The Tuesday pasta special offers any pasta from the menu with a glass of wine for just $29, or opt for the same deal on Wednesdays with any pizza.

Snug and intimate with a nostalgic vibe, the family-run Osteria di Russo & Russo takes its style from classic trattorias from Italy in the 1970s. Drawing on the Russo family’s Italian heritage, this romantic restaurant reinterprets classic Mediterranean fare, focusing on creating meals from scratch like Momma would and priding itself on a friendly hospitality, where you’ll feel like royalty. The menu revolves around a series of intricate plates designed for the whole table to share, family-style. Highlights may include black garlic taralli with Cantabrian anchovies, bone marrow with pork Bolognese on a sourdough crumpet, sea urchin cannelloni with spanner crab and duck breast with radicchio and muscatel in a Dianne sauce. The second floor has been transformed into an elegant and welcoming private dining space for small groups, to make your next occasion truly special.
