Ruta Oaxaca Mexican Cuisine opened in Astoria in 2021 with such a wonderful and successful home run that a second location opened in Patchogue in March 2022. Ruta Oaxaca means “Road to Oaxaca,” a historic state in the southern part of Mexico. Mr. Castillo and his Partners are keenly focused on honoring Oaxacan culinary traditions, whose fame is derived in great part from its many varieties of moles. By legend, these ancient recipes are more than sauces, they are the very focus of the meal. Ruta Oaxaca proudly features four moles, each prepared using the Oaxacan mole recipes that have made the cuisine world famous. Known for their generous portions of pasta entrees, grilled fare, and fresh fish, Butera's has established a fine reputation as a neighborhood place where guests often see people they know.
It is owned and operated by Martin Butera, his wife Laurie, Martin's brother Gary Butera, and partner and chef Nick Zografos. The large open room is tastefully decorated with a traditional and contemporary mix, with rich dark woodwork and stone treatments, granite table tops, a wood and granite bar, fieldstone and hardwood floors, stone fireplace, exposed wine racks and a Tiffany style fixture at the entrance. Fresh flowers complete the handsome decor.
In addition to their extensive menu you can select from the creative specials like Grilled Filet of Halibut with Prince Edward Island Mussels on a citrus rosemary butternut squash risotto.

The front reception and bar area were packed, and the tables in the dining room were placed very close together, which made it difficult to enjoy a quiet dinner alone with my husband.
