Fabulous experience Party of 3 2 had traditional afternoon tea with Prosecco & 1 gentleman’s afternoon tea - which was regular size cheeseburger, fries, slaw, scotch egg & pork pie! All obviously homemade, fresh & delicious. Traditional version was equally tasty, good selection of sandwiches- bread very fresh, sausage roll, cheese scone, plain scone with clotted cream & jam plus 5 wee sweet treats each. Excellent value for money. Server was delightful young lady -sadly didn’t catch her name but she was so cheerful & professional despite it being a very busy Sunday / Bank holiday weekend. Lots of parties of various sizes indulging in the afternoon tea, however it didn’t feel hectic/ busy and wasn’t at all noisy.

FAQs

The atmosphere is relaxed, calm and slightly elegant, a comfortable hotel lounge with superb Castle views. Guests praised the relaxing environment, friendly and professional staff, and said that even when the venue was busy it didn’t feel noisy, making it ideal for social catch-ups or special treats.

Yes, the staff are described as helpful and accommodating, and the hotel asks guests to call for bookings or special arrangements. For December bookings, limited availability or large-group needs, call 0191 2331010 (or the event team for 10+). If you have dietary needs or seating requests, phone ahead so the team can confirm arrangements.

Portion sizes are generous and good value. Guests who tried the gentleman’s afternoon tea noted a regular-size cheeseburger, fries, slaw, scotch egg and pork pie, while the traditional afternoon tea included several sandwiches, a sausage roll, cheese and plain scones plus five small sweet treats each. Overall guests commented the food felt homemade, fresh and satisfying.

Afternoon tea is served in the hotel’s luxurious, spacious lounge with views of the Castle. Parties of six or more are seated in the hotel restaurant, and groups of ten or more should contact the hotel event team directly. The hotel may occasionally move bookings to an alternative area, so call ahead for large parties or specific seating requests.

Weekdays are the best bet if you prefer a quieter experience, midweek afternoons typically have fewer groups and a more relaxed pace. If you enjoy a livelier atmosphere and don’t mind more people, weekends and bank holidays are popular and well-regarded by guests.

For a quieter experience, choose a weekday afternoon or an earlier sitting within the 12:00–16:00 service. Weekends and bank holidays can be busy, guests noted a busy Sunday/Bank Holiday afternoon that still felt calm, so midweek visits are best if you want a more peaceful atmosphere.

Casual dress is the stated dress code, so you can come comfortably dressed while still enjoying an elegant lounge setting. If you have a specific occasion or are booking a larger private party, mention it when you reserve and the team can advise.

Busiest: weekends and bank holidays, guests specifically noted a busy Sunday/Bank Holiday afternoon. Quietest: weekday afternoons outside school holidays are likely calmer. Because service runs daily 12:00–16:00, aim for early weekday seatings for the most peaceful visit.

The published hours show service daily from 12:00–16:00, which suggests they operate on public holidays, but availability can vary on special dates. For holiday periods (especially December) call the hotel directly to confirm opening times and to make or adjust bookings.

Yes, Afternoon Tea at The Lounge offers a relaxed, slightly luxurious setting that works well for a date. Guests praise the spacious lounge, superb views of the Castle and attentive, cheerful service that keeps the experience pleasant even on busy days. Choose a midday seating (service runs 12:00–16:00) for a calm, scenic experience and consider booking ahead to secure a window seat.

Yes, families do visit and guests commonly bring children or celebrate birthdays. The focus is on traditional and gentleman’s afternoon tea rather than a children’s menu, so if you’re bringing young children consider an earlier seating or mention any menu preferences when you book.

A formal waiting list isn’t mentioned, but the hotel asks guests to call if online availability shows none, they may be able to accommodate you. For popular dates (especially December or bank holidays) phone bookings and early reservations are recommended to secure a table.

Yes, the hotel accepts private parties. The listing notes the venue allows private parties and large groups are handled by the event team; for parties of six or more you’ll be seated in the hotel restaurant and groups of ten or more should contact the event team directly to arrange private or reserved space.
